Please recommend me a foundation for 45+ skin

I'm in my mid-40s and I've really noticed a change in my skin. Not hit menopause yet, but possibly peri menopause. My skin seems to have a lot more little lines and is generally drier than it used to be.

I've never worn much makeup; usually just basic moisturiser (something like Simple) and then foundation (No 7 Stay Perfect).

The foundation doesn't seem to be working for me any more; it seems to just sit there, and it emphasises the lines rather than hiding them, and my whole face just looks a bit tired and meh.

Is there something different that I should try? I don't spend a lot on makeup as you can tell, so nothing too fancy. My skin is, I think, fairly normal (not particularly dry or oily etc) and I'm not allergic to anything (as far as I know).

I would try a tinted moisturiser, Im 44 and use that for daily wear to work and i find it does good coverage and and isnt caked.

Maybe a setting spray too, so the cover holds

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/05/2024 15:52

Max Factor miracle pure is lovely.

WhatNext24 · 29/05/2024 16:01

I'm 43 and have moved to wearing less and less makeup over time, especially on my skin. I can't believe I used to wear EL Doublewear in daylight 😂

I second wearing something sheer like a tinted moisturiser. I recently found Chanel's 'watery tint' or something and absolutely LOVE it. The price is a bit alarming but in this case I think it's worth it.

Redannie118 · 29/05/2024 16:04

I'm 51 with problem skin and Charlotte Tilbury is lovely and Dewy ( and doesn't sit in my fine lines)
I also bought a jade skin roller a while ago that I keep I the fridge. I find that if I give my skin a good 2 min roll once my moisturiser is on( I just use Aveeno- nothing fancy!) It makes a big difference to lines and radiance on your face. I think the roller was from Aldi, so really cheap!

Erborian cc cream. Very light coverage - is white and magically goes skin coloured when you rub it it. Korean.

onlymyselftoanswerto1 · 29/05/2024 16:12

BPerfect chroma colour luminous is lovely - gives a glow without being sparkly - I'm 45 and have started using this the past few months and highly recommend

I’m 57 and don’t like wearing foundation. I wear a product made by “it”, I originally used the CC oil free matte in medium, I’ve just started using their CC colour correcting full coverage cream in light, both are high SPF. I decided to mix both together and they are beautiful. I don’t use brushes, just massage around my face with fingertips, my chiropractor has asked me what I’ve done different to my skin, she can see a difference, it looks so natural.

I also use NIVEA sun UV FACE anti age Q10 cream, SPF50. I’ve purchased all of these products off eBay, it works out a lot cheaper.

Get a sample pot from the counter 😊

Armani luminous silk

omnishambles · 29/05/2024 16:43

Another vote for the Max factor mineral pure and the elf halo glow underneath it for special occasions.

suki1964 · 29/05/2024 18:46

Im really enjoying Laura Geller

Its a baked foundation, so think powder, but believe it or not it doesn't emphasise the lines and wrinkles

You do need to prep your skin, moisturise then they do recommend their spackle primer - which I do use as well as any other ones I have needing used - so all sorts get used with the same results

its like your skin - only better. Post menopause I have an oil slick of a t-zone which believe it or not can be very dry, and liquid foundations I find cake - this stuff doesnt. Light as can be , no settling, no sliding off, no cracking - Im me just air brushed

DeadbeatYoda · 29/05/2024 21:05

Another vote here for Laura Geller baked.

DeadbeatYoda · 29/05/2024 21:05

It's a baked cream rather than powder.

No 7 hydra luminous foundation doesn’t cake and gives a nice dewy finish

ThankGodForDancingFruit · 29/05/2024 21:13

Highly recommend IT Cosmetics CC cream. Full coverage, stays put, doesn’t sit in wrinkles and suitable even for eczema/psoriasis/rosacea. Their cleanser is also gorgeous. Tried and tested, a little goes a long way.

This!

I also use a decent primer under it and Jones Road Miracle Balm over the top for super glowyness.

samlovesdilys · 29/05/2024 21:42

I really like the Trinny make up, they have a really good feel and smell, and seems good on my aged skin!

MamaAndTheSofa · 30/05/2024 21:16

Thanks everyone! I'll start looking for some of these!

Question - what's a "primer"? I just moisturise and then do foundation - am I missing a step? What would you recommend?

Usually a silicone, its polyfilla for the face

Aworldofmyown · 30/05/2024 23:03

It CC cream is excellent.

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 30/05/2024 23:19

I like L'Oréal BB cream. Sheer but evens things out.

shellshocks · 30/05/2024 23:45

You probably need new skincare before you worry about the foundation. simple is ok as a very basic moisturiser, but once the fine lines start you'll need something with a bit more firepower - especially if your skin is dry.

Lots of good foundation suggestions above :)

I agree, this is great

MamaAndTheSofa · 31/05/2024 19:36

@suki1964 can you point me to a decent primer?

@suki1964 can you point me to a decent primer?

I cant Im afraid, I wouldn't know decent if it jumped up and bit me on the nose :)

I have three here, one from Primark - which gives a dewy complexion, one from avon, which is supposed to be mattifying and the one I got from Laura Geller to use with her foundation.

They are all much of a muchness imo. Kind of blur the pores and allow smooth application of foundation. Im sure there are some mega expensive ones out there that give fantastic results

I tend to google things like "top rated whatever" and read the reviews if Im searching out something in particular - not just cosmetics - anything - and make up my mind that way
