Help! Strong deodorant needed for teenage boy

Calling all wise MNers for help. My son (early teens) has developed really strong BO over the last few weeks. His hygene is great, he showers morning and night and always wears a fresh shirt every day. Yet, despite this the poor boy's clothes smells really strong. I have just done a load of washing (school shirts) and as I have come to hang them up. They still smell! He is using a dove deodorant but clearly
it is not enough. Can anyone help? Thanks so much in advance.

I've found Mitchum is better and also soak the shirt armpits in Dr Beckham odour remover before putting in the washer.

CerealPonderer · 27/05/2024 09:36

Spray bottle of white vinegar and spritz the armpits of his clothes inside and outside before washing. I do this with all of the dc's sports kit and smells totally disappear.

Deodorant I can't really help with...I would just experiment with a couple of different brands though.

If his skin can handle it Perspirex extra strong is the mutts nuts. It burns and itches a bit the first time you use it but it last for 5 days at a time. You apply it at night and wash off in the morning. It's a tiny bottle for about £10 but lasts ages.

Michum works for my stinky son but only if he puts it on as soon as he washes.

Teenage boys really do honk!

Marblessolveeverything · 27/05/2024 09:43

Other than stepping up the deodorant, which may not work for him if he has sensitive skin. Is he using soap instead of dove, shower gel etc. is he drinking enough water?

Is his jackets etc being washed regularly too? Sometimes it can be the volume of the smell as well among clothing layers.

sanex stick or Mitchum every time… absolute game changers

WhompingWillows · 27/05/2024 09:47

Mother of extremely stinky teen DD here! Switching from shower gel to bar soap for armpit washing makes a world of difference and the best deodorant we have found is Sure Maximum Strength. Would he consider hair removal as it is this that traps the bacteria that leads to BO (I don’t know if body hair removal is a thing for teen boys)? Also, the vinegar spray on shirt and blazer armpits is crucial as normal washing doesn’t seem to remove the stench which only becomes more apparent as the day wears on and the body warms up.

DS uses Trust which we order from their website. It was recommended on MN actually and really works.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 27/05/2024 10:29

I agree that it will help if he showers with bar soap rather than shower gel as this leaves a thin film on our skin which can prevent antiperspirant working properly.
(Dove is not bar soap it's really a solid shower gel, but there are lots of actual soaps to choose from)

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 27/05/2024 12:22

Triple dry twice a day.

collywobble · 27/05/2024 12:33

Triple dry and a good soap. Make sure he's washing properly and drying under his armpits as my son was liable to say he'd been in the shower washed his body but not really under his armpits.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/05/2024 12:38

Bars of soap in the shower plus Sure maximum protection.

Keepingongoing · 27/05/2024 14:13

Can’t advise on the deodorant/antiperspirant but definitely use bar soap rather than gel, and ( very important) get right into the armpits with a wet loofah and the soap - and scrub! Or a flannel if he doesn’t like the loofah, but the loofah really is the most effective. He needs to get a good lather going, then rinse well.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 27/05/2024 14:15

Mitchum roll on then Mitchum spray deo. Lots of the sprays seem to just be body spray not deo.

Ihavenoclu · 27/05/2024 16:35

Lots of things to try thank you everyone! Would simple be a good bar of soap to use?

Mitchum deodorant and bars of the yellow anti-bacterial bars of dettol soap for the shower do the trick here.

stayathomer · 27/05/2024 17:14

Make sure he is scrubbing the pits- ds was the same and then lately on suddenly caring about this sort of stuff I mentioned this to him and next thing he’s scrubbing, using sure roll on and aftershave and suddenly the house smells better!!!! Best of luck op!!

Hopingforno2in2024 · 27/05/2024 20:28

I was a horribly sweaty teenager. Perspirex/Driclor were life changers (enabled me to leave the house). I grew out of needing them in my mid twenties and can now get away with the Sure 48 hour stuff (which I apply every 24 hours).

No, you need old fashioned soap. Something like Palmolive, Imperial Leather as they are made of proper soap. Simple is a high percentage of moisturiser.

familyissues12345 · 27/05/2024 20:58

My son uses the 72hr Sure for men one (aerosol that comes in a box) and the Dove stick. He finds the dove particularly good (and he absolutely honked before)

familyissues12345 · 27/05/2024 20:59

Forgot to say, he also washes under his arms with a flannel and bar soap when he gets in from school

isthewashingdryyet · 27/05/2024 21:00

Bar soap and a flannel and a really good scrub

Tequilamockinbird · 27/05/2024 21:07

I second Driclor. Used it in my teens and still use now if going abroad etc.
