Aveeno Alternatives?

NetflixViewer · 23/05/2024 09:35

I've used Aveeno on my eczematous, scaly skin all over my body for probably about twenty years now and love it but the latest price rises and shrinkflation (why are the big bottles now so small!?) have pushed me over the edge. Does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives for similarly dry, sensitive skin?

I know boots have an oat range now and I've tried it but it wasn't as good and any other oat creams I find are about the same price. I've considered buying vats of doublebase or similar from the pharmacy and then mixing in my own ground oats but I reckon they'd go mouldy in days. So has anyone found a miracle replacement that doesn't actually cost more? Thank you!

Child's farm is really good for sensitive skin and eczema.

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 23/05/2024 14:57

Truthfully I don’t think anything try rivals it! If you have a Costco card/ know someone with one, they do have it in there and it makes it slightly cheaper.

The Cetraben is significantly more expensive than Aveeno!

I buy Aveeno from Ocado or Amazon, both regularly have good offers.

At the moment it's £8.10 for 500ml on Amazon, and £6 for 300ml on Ocado.

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/05/2024 15:10

Can you get large ones on prescription? Cheaper than the full price I imagine. My doc prescribed it for my child. Eczema is a medical condition so if it keeps it under control you should be able to get prescriptions.

Yes, this is what I'm finding, most alternatives are even more expensive! And I typically only buy on offer but even that is pricey with the rate I use it.

Ohhh, this is interesting, I had no idea it was available on prescription. I'm happy to pay prescription charge if it's less per ml than boots but don't want to do it if the NHS has to pay the difference. Will ask my Dr, I think the price the NHS pays now comes up on the system....

Shop around, the latest bargain i found was on asos, of all places!

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 23/05/2024 15:17

Can you get Cetaphil there? (I'm not in the UK)

DH was recommended it by his dermatologist following pre cancerous skin therapy - its very gentle with no nasties in it, and cheaper than Aveeno.

We buy the big 1 ltr bottles in Costco for the equivalent of about 9 pounds.

I think this may have to be the solution, maybe I can put an alert on Camel Camel Camel or something. I dream of finding a deal at a decent price and then buying a year's worth! Oh well, at least my skin isn't addicted to creme de la mer or something really £££.

I think I've tried the face wash, will see what the cream is like.

Get someone to bring some back from the US or Canada?

Ahh sorry you are correct! The bottle of cetraben oat we have here seems massive and Boots have it on offer so I thought it was a good deal until I compared price per ml. Sorry again, hope you find some Aveeno at a decent price op. 🙂

dimsumfatsum · 23/05/2024 19:31

I only discovered aveeno when my doctor prescribed it for my painfully dry skin. I've since started buying it in bulk from wherever there're offers like Boots, Superdrug, Amazon. Costco does Aveeno but it's the lotion not the cream which is a massive shame.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/05/2024 12:17

If it helps they have the big 500ml. With the pump top of cetreben oat for 10..00
There is another brand with same ingredients which for the life of me can't remember I'll be back

Aproderm

Epimax and Childs farm

AnnaMagnani · 24/05/2024 12:45

Look at more 'medical' marketed creams: Epimax, Zerobase, Doublebase, Diprobase

Blondiebeachbabe · 24/05/2024 15:59

I get Aveeno on repeat prescription. Totally free (Scotland). I think in England repeat prescriptions are cheaper, aren't they?

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 24/05/2024 16:04

I have a prescription cream from the GP that works well. For Aveeno, if you know someone going to the US it's cheaper.

I find these less effective than Aveeno for some reason. They're good while they're on but don't seem to actually help the problem in the way Aveeno does.

Aproderm

£7.49 for 500g isn't bad I'm going to give it a try!

Epimax and Childs farm

I've tried epimax before and wasn't a fan. Will have another look at Child's Farm.

Ah, actually, I was looking at the non-oatmeal one. The oatmeal one is £10 for 500g but that's still a little cheaper than the dark blue Aveeno when it's on offer so will give it a try
