Period Swimsuit

DD is 13 (she has ASD and is non-verbal) and I believe she's on the cusp of getting her period.

We're traveling for a month to a beach destination and I want to be prepared in case it happens abroad, as she would be devastated to miss out on a single moment on the sea and pool.

Does anyone have recommendations for an effective, leak proof brand please?

I have period pants, but have never used a swimsuit.

Thanks!

Id love to get one for my DD too. Sorry to hijack this, but can anyone also explain how it works?? How can it absorb period but not swimming pool and not cause bloody clouds in the water?

WomenStuff · 14/05/2024 19:15

I have a pair of bikini bottoms from Modibod. I really like them but I haven't had the guts to test them on a heavy flow day, only light.

I can't answer the technical question either sorry!

Bobbybobbins · 14/05/2024 19:45

I've not tried the period swimsuits, just the pants. Possibly get a pair of period bikini bottoms and a period swimsuit and wear the bottoms underneath for a double layer of protection?

I tested some in the bath and they don't work for me

Ohh that's a brilliant idea, thanks!

Did they work well for a light flow day please?

My DD 10 has a Modibodi swimsuit from their teen range and it's been great and seen her through a holiday and school swimming lessons. She's quite heavy and it's been fine though I'll probably get some bottoms to add on for extra security next holiday

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 14/05/2024 21:03

DD wore a period swimsuit for swimming at school on light flow days. They were fine. No leaks when she got out either.

Wouldn't risk it with a heavy flow though.

I've always wondered that.

FYI - I was at a motorway services restroom yesterday and a poster for the “WUKA” brand period swimwear for teens and adults had a discount code and a Trustpilot rating of 4.5 out of 5.

The 20% discount code is WATER20 and the offer expires on 31st May.

I haven’t tried them tbh as I’ve already gone through the menopause!

I guess you could google for reviews of the various brands before deciding whether to purchase or not.

I've also always wondered how period swimwear works once you're in the water! Surely once it's wet the blood makes its way into the water?

Elieza · 14/05/2024 21:09

I'd be too scared in case they leaked and everyone in the pool saw a trail of blood....

Prob trust them to sunbathe in though.
Defo try in bath or something first.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 14/05/2024 21:10

A friend's dd has used them. I'm biting some for dd after a previous holiday trauma involving a tampon that we would all rather forget.

I think they work by witchcraft personally but apparently they just work by being really snug so they outer head a layer of waterproof/water repellent fabric and they fit really snug so water doesn't get in.

Modibodi do some that are for heavier flies now but the patterns are a bit weird so I'm getting the short style bottoms for dd and she can wear with a tankini top. I think for holidays and full days at the beach the idea is we will get 2 pairs so she can swim and if nervous of leaking after a swim can change them.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 14/05/2024 21:11

Ugh. Bloody phone typing. Hopefully still understandable.

oakleaffy · 14/05/2024 21:13

Have you seen the other thread about swimming pools?
Piss, blood, crap - basically swimming in other people’s waste.

Don’t swim on period days is probably best.
Nothing will hold blood in ( mooncup?)

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 14/05/2024 21:19

Not swimming on period days isn't really an option for the many girls who swim competitively and train. Would be a bit shit for a girl to miss swimming for the duration of her summer holiday too if it coincided with her period.

Managing cups and tampons can be difficult and not all young girls can or want to use them. Period swimwear is used by many, seems to work and it's a good option.

Technically the outerlayer is waterproof, so as long as they fit well(snug) water shouldn't get in.

The layer that faces "you" is an absorbent layer that absorbs the blood.

Violet80 · 14/05/2024 21:57

@ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat ahh I see thanks for explaining, I've never seen them in person, only the pics online. Now dd has started her periods I was thinking about buying her some of the swimwear for the summer holidays (already have the modibodi underwear for her)

AnonAnom940 · 15/05/2024 10:54

Edited to add, sorry just re-read the OP. Non verbal asd adds more difficulty form you. My below suggestions might not be appropriate. Hope you find something

Are tampons not an option?
As I have a heavy flow I just can't tolerate the pants at all and therefore swimsuits if I was staying in them longer than an hour's swim. It absorbs it into the gusset but then it's there all damp until you change. I'd much rather just change a tampon, pad or cup than change my entire knickers/bikini bottoms.

Mooncup is my preference. Fab when swimming, but definitely empty after being in the water for any length of time. I don't know what I would have been like as child with the mooncup as they weren't a thing.

I used tampons as a kid. I swam competitively so had very little choice. I loved the beach and pool on holiday too. Tampons are quick and easy. Applicator ones. Lilet Teens range is good.

wintersgold · 15/05/2024 11:20

Just get her a period delay tablet, no fuss.

WomenStuff · 15/05/2024 11:43

GlobalCitz · 14/05/2024 20:56

Did they work well for a light flow day please?

Yes, really well. Felt very secure, helped by the fact they felt big (as in wide enough gusset, high enough rise, enough bum coverage) and were firm fitting.

GlobalCitz · 15/05/2024 11:56

It's really disappointing to see someone suggesting girls just shouldn't swim during their period.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions and for the technical clarifications on how they actually work (so crafty)!

Unfortunately, DD's disabilities mean she wouldn't be able to use a mooncup/tampon by herself and I won't do it for her.

We're trying to teach her consent and body autonomy and due to her learning disability it's tricky to explain that some people may touch her private parts (Mum/Doctors) and other can't, so it's just easier to have a blanket ban on it.

The period delay tablet is actually a great shout as a one-off solution, but I'm also going to buy the swimsuit and the bikini bottoms and test them in the bath!

Got this for my DD

https://wuka.co.uk/products/wuka-swim-bikini-brief?utmsource=google&utmmmedium=cpc&utmcampaign=18480871426&utmmcontent=143076636658&utmterm=&creative=697366671100&matchtype=&network=g&device=m&gaddsource=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwupGyBhBBEiwA0UcqaH4L6KoUKUHP1Ss0TOZTOHi8P-aiuDamNLL1NjpLKWwaK-hfQdW1uBoCsW4QAvDBwE

She is a keen swimmer and started her period at 11. It's been great for her and she wears it under her normal swimsuit so nobody can tell (her preference)
It works fine for swimming lessons but you might need a couple of pairs and change during the day for a whole day at the pool kind of holiday as I think they're more for light-medium flow

No they are designed to absorb the blood and not let it through

The main thing is that they fit well/are snug.

Also, if price is an issue you can sometimes find them on ebay brand new , slightly cheaper.

We have the modi bodi one piece swim suit.
