What do you wear in the summer? Size 14

I was always a size 10, 12 for a bit after my first baby then back to size 10. Now I’m a proper size 14 after my second. I don’t know if this should make much difference but obviously none of my previous summer clothes fit. I’m very bottom heavy and don’t like how I look in shorts anymore, but maybe there is a better style? Also very slight tummy whereas that part of me was always flat before. I don’t know if skirts or dresses are better but then I have the chub rub issue. What’s in style?

Ive never been great at this. At least when I was a size 10 with a young face I could get away with anything. 🙄 I love bright colours.

Oh and please don’t just tell me to lose weight. Yes I will at one point but I’m postpartum and life is quite stressful right now so I’d like to buy clothes that actually fit.

I got this Whistles skirt for £13, looks like it’s never been worn and gorgeous material with a lovely cut. Could be worn with a strappy top and sandals / flip flops in hot weather

What do you wear in the summer? Size 14

Lanacane do an anti-chafing gel for inner thighs, works well for me. (Not the anti-itch one! )

You sound a very similar shape to me, after I had my second- she's 4.5 now and I'm still this shape, so I guess it's just me now. Size 14 pear shaped.

Things I've bought for summer that I feel nice in:
A maxi skirt- I've bought both of these
this in the long length to take it to the top of my shoes
looks pretty on

Loose trousers
Stripe trouser
heavier linen casual trousers
Trousers with the pleat on the front can be good too- I have a really flattering pair from Asda studio edit.

these basic t-shirts are nice on, and not short like they look on the model- size up, I wear XL as a 14

these shorts are super flattering on a chunkier thigh

I tend to wear a stripe/ patterned bottom then a t-shirt with them a lot of the time. I also have a few short sleeve linen/ patterned shirts that I wear over a vest top with shorts/ jeans.

I'm getting a lot of wear out of this cardigan with jeans

Dresses wise, I go for a fit and flare, and I personally stay away from strappy most of the time, as for me it makes me feel really out of proportion as I don't have generous boobs. I like a good shirt dress, and I've found some really nice ones this season in tk Maxx, but that involves hunting in store really. I'll link more as I remember it!

Can I just say, from all the posts and threads I've read in S&B this one has some of the best recommendations I've seen.

@xSideshowAuntSallyx aw, thanks!

BiscuitLover3678 · 07/05/2024 20:27

This is all really good advice. Thank you so much.

I'm also a size 14. I don't wear shorts as I don't like my legs and I don't wear strappy dresses. Things I get a lot of wear out of are:

Palazzo style trousers in a bold pattern with a plain v neck t shirt tucked in.

Midi or maxi dresses, usually wrap style or shirt dresses but something with a v neck. You can get shorts to wear under them for chub rub. The snag ones are good but I also got some cheap ones from Amazon that don't make me too hot.

Jumpsuits in lightweight fabrics.

Denim jackets or thin, longline cardigans for layering.

This is also my wardrobe too

I bought this in Peacocks and wore it quite a lot on recent holiday www.peacocks.co.uk/4603695-blue-ditsy.html#mz-expanded-view-865073230680.

My absolute favourite summer dress is in this style, but different colours that I bought in a boutique. I had to sew up the bust a bit as it was too revealing, the elastic rushing at the waist is very flattering www.goose-island.co.uk/collections/dresses/products/molly-gold-fleck-dress-turquoise

NotARealWookiie · 07/05/2024 21:08

Get anti chafing pants for under dresses/skirts.

rookiemere · 07/05/2024 21:12

Found these dresses <may buy one> www.silkfred.com/womens/clothing/dresses/day-dresses/hoxton-gal/oversized-v-neck-detailed-floral-print-maxi-dress-in-blue-and-white would be very flattering for Summer.

I’m 50 now and I’ve given up not feeling ok about my body shape. I used to be very curvy but much more slender before health issues. I’m an 18 top 12-14 bottoms so finding clothes that fit is an absolute nightmare, plus I don’t like shopping.

I managed to try to get over my perception of my body image by making myself get dressed each day and look in the full length mirror. Pretend it’s not me and what would I think of the other person so think nice thoughts and positive things, even say them aloud to yourself and then just go and get on with your day. I also stopped wearing make up so probably do look awful tbh but I have more important things to focus on like my MH and feeling better.

I am currently trying to find a few dresses which is not going well tbh as I’m 5ft 4 and even midi’s seem too long on me. I realised in next the other day that all the trousers seemed too long for me and I was in the petite section so no idea what’s going on with lengths.

I don’t know what’s in so I’m now sticking to the basics. I have a couple pairs of shorts (never wore them until last year at any age as no confidence now I don’t honestly care), a few skirts, cropped trousers, leggings and cropped leggings and for tops a few nicer bits then just standard T-shirts and vests. Then a few bits to wear over my shoulders in the evenings and a couple of old hoodies if I go to the beach and it’s windy.

You will be running around after your little ones so wear what you are comfy in, don’t overthink your size as your body is amazing.

Devilshands · 08/05/2024 11:11

If you can afford to splurge and have a few ‘nice’ pieces then DVF!

dudsville · 08/05/2024 11:23

I wear loose fitting midi/maxi cotton dresses with chub rub shorts, I think mine are sloggie and they're very comfortable and breathable. The thing I'm desperate for is a loose/oversized very lightweight grey cardigan. Cannot find oneI like. I have plenty of nice jackets but for some reason my life won't be perfect until I find this cardigan!

lurkylurk · 08/05/2024 11:41

If you have a waist (perimenopausal, I don’t, daughter same weight does) then
skirts with top tucked in can be very flattering. Other than that floaty dresses or empire line ones (for me with the no waist!) or wrap style are great. I find v-neck best as a covered up top can make me look bigger than am especially as I have broad shoulders.

Re. chub rub, anti chafe shorts are good but make sure cotton or viscose as you’ll sweat to death and end up with a yeast infection in synthetic ones in warm weather, alternatively use a cream deodorant on inner thigh and then Megababe Thigh Rescue. You may need to keep in bag to reapply but
does the job.

Floaty wide leg trousers or cropped trousers are good if you have a waist and can tuck things in but if not and have slimming legs then shorts with a floaty top are very slimming, comfortable and look nice, if a little cooler then ankle grazing jeans and a floaty top.

Compash · 08/05/2024 11:45

Loose trousers and blouses in natural fibres work for me. But I always turn up the sleeves to reveal my wrists, and like a v or unbuttoned neck, to show slimmer parts and reduce the bulk. I also like to mix up the colours - lilac with red, or navy and hot pink, khaki with pale pink or lemon, just for a bit of summer gaiety!

Loose shirt unbuttoned over a vest top with pedal pushers and espadrilles or fishermen's sandals work too.

I wish I could just throw a dress on but I'm a busty little unit and they make me look matronly... sometimes I'll wear a knee-length or straight maxi skirt with a slim top. Colourful little cardigans to throw over the top on a cool evening - I think Markies sell a lot of these?

But like @Tbry24 I'm in my 50s and I'm damned if I'm going to hate on my body! I must dress for comfort, but I also aim to dress like I love myself and care for myself - simple but well-tended. Summer is a lovely time to feel the sun on us, and go barefoot in the grass and sand sometimes, and just enjoy inhabiting our bodies! 🙂

juniorspesh · 08/05/2024 19:04

Teenage stoner. All I've bought is some Marimekko pool slides, a Reductress baseball hat and two kimonos. I think that's me done.

Jade1234gg · 08/05/2024 19:45

A long peplum dress or a peplum top and some nice jeans or leggings boo hoo have some nice stuff and shein

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 08/05/2024 21:19

I wore some black slim ankle grazer trousers today paired with an (old) pair of Sebago (Kate Middleton style) shoes, I had a tshirt and cardigan on as well. This was for work though, I'll be back in my jeans tomorrow 😂.

When it gets warmer I'll wear dresses(to just above the knee) and occasionally pencil skirts (in big vibrant summer flowery prints). I also love shorts for their practicality (I do a lot of cycling in the summer) and wear them with a tshirt or sleeveless top.

I hate this time of year though when it's too cold for bare legs but too warm for tights and jeans.

Princessfluffy · 08/05/2024 22:12

I'm wearing barrel jeans and peplum tops with Teva hurricane drift sandals.

GameOfJones · 08/05/2024 22:49

These are a great basic t shirt. True to size and comfortable, I have bought multiples of the black version.

These wide legged trousers are flattering and feel cool.

I also get loads of wear out of these Tapered trousers and they come in different patterns.

This type of jumpsuit works well on me.

A multipack of cotton cycling shorts from Amazon to avoid chub rub when wearing skirts and dresses.

I like dresses, loose linen trousers and am always on the look out for perfect tshirts. I got a couple I love from Hush last year but they don't do the same style this year

Divasaurus · 09/05/2024 10:33

I’ve posted already - same size - here are some of my favourite brands:

Me + Em (I find they size generously)
Ralph Lauren (great discounts available on House of Fraser website)
Zimmermann
Jigsaw
Hobbs
Baukjen
Mint Velvet
Boden
Roman Originals

Hobbs jeans are fantastic in my opinion for a curvy size 14 shape. You can often get them heavily discounted in the outlet.

Roman is unbeatable for dresses at a really good price and they are flattering and good quality vs price.

YorkNew · 09/05/2024 10:46

I’ve recently slimmed down from an 18 to a 14 and have now found my beloved print midi dresses no longer suit me. So I’ve used the opportunity to try different looks. So far linen trousers with striped hoodies and twin sets seem to be working. I think I’m going to concentrate on buying separates.
I am short, mid 50’s and fortunately still have a waist and am finding shorter length tops that don’t need to be tucked in suit me.
