The beginning of the end for mulberry???

I think it could be.. I saw an article this week in the guardian saying their share value down by about 60% I think it was.. v slow sales. Their spokesperson was blaming luxury shopping slow down but that isn’t really being felt by the main big brands.. my gut on mulberry is that they’re not current enough now and I don’t think creatively they can match up to their competition

IsoldeWagner · 02/05/2024 21:47

I think the styles are very dull. The two in the OP's post just look dated.
The one in the Guardian just looks ugly.

You are kidding! Sometimes I think these handbag manufacturers are trolling women.

I think those are aimed at the Far East market. I can’t see western women being tempted - or at least only very young ones.

AsphaltBeach · 02/05/2024 22:02

I like the Miffy bags personally.
and I’m not very young 😂

Shannith · 02/05/2024 22:11

I got a beautiful condition mulberry bag for £7 in a charity shop last week. It's real, I've got some ones brought in store. Still beaming.

GingerHat · 02/05/2024 23:11

@Shannith great find! Post a pic!

Shannith · 03/05/2024 05:36

Here you go

There are Mulberry bags in the TX maxx sale
Shannith · 03/05/2024 05:37

And a coach one

Blimey, the bag in the guardian thumbnail is revolting.

Agree. Who are they trying to kid that they’re not just using up pieces of scrap leather?

PhuckyNell · 03/05/2024 09:02

£400 in 2004 is the same as approx £800 today so you still spent a lot of money on a bag

I can’t believe how expensive mulberry is these days - I got my Bayswater about 10 years ago and it was £450 or so at the airport. If I had a grand to spend on a bag I wouldn’t spend it on a mulberry that’s for sure!

Same! I got a Bayswater for £495 back in about 2009. The same bag is £995 now.

Personally I think it was a mistake to move away from classic, well-made leather bags into the high fashion market with ugly designs, colours and price tags.

BIossomtoes · 03/05/2024 10:14

It’s not really fair to make comparisons with 15 years ago. What hasn’t doubled in price in that time?

HolidayAtNight · 03/05/2024 14:22

I was surprised to see that their shoe section now seems to just be one pair of trainers in different colours. A few years ago they had really interesting shoes.

ClonedSquare · 03/05/2024 14:39

I bought an Alexa from Mulberry's own website for the same price a few months ago. Not in an official sale, just a random discount on specific colours. So they're not massively devalued by being in TK Maxx.

LLMn · 03/05/2024 15:04

I found a Gold Pfeil in a charity shop a while back. Wrong colour, wrong style, wrong size, but the leather was out of this world - the craftsmanship was unbelievable. I bought it for £3 just to ward me (by touching this Gold Pfeil and looking at the seams and stitching) off buying these monstrously overpriced parodies of bags, i.e. Chanel, Mulberry, YSL, etc. And also, £999 for a Chinese-made bag? Seriously?

Mrsredlipstick · 03/05/2024 17:00

I collect Mulberry bags. However I only buy made in England. Some are now made in Turkey. I buy mainly secondhand.
I Iove them.

Back in the days when Mulberry made pretty much all their leather goods down in Chilcompton (and had an eccentric little factory shop in the village) DH & I used to buy so much from them for very reasonable prices (furniture/luggage/bedding/tablewear/bags/wallets/towels/jackets/raincoats/shirts/polos....). Their clothing was also very traditional and well made. In current prices, a small handbag or suitcase would have been sub £200.

We still have some Mulberry towels in the bathroom that have to be 20-25 years old.

If anyone has recommendations for classic, well made leather bags and goods, made in UK do let me know! I am a fan of Aspinal but they might be moving into the 'too fashioney' space .

I got the same one and I just hope it fits 😃

Have you received yours? Mine came and love it! Typically weather’s gone shit now though!

The beginning of the end for mulberry???

They were struggling years ago. I knew someone who was a supplier to them then and they insisted on COD.

That's what I was thinking too I'm afraid.

They've had to put some huge reductions in-store on the weird padded ones. I could have bought one in the Bath shop for £250 the other day. I didn't as I think they are quite hideous!

Do you mean the Kilver Court outlet store which is near Bath?

When SIL got married there me and my auntie (she’s a big Mulberry fan) were excited to see what was on offer there, but they didn’t have much (they have other brands too) so I think we passed on bags.

I was bought a Mulberry bag (can’t recall name offhand) when they first became “trendy” back in 90s or maybe 00s. Then I bought one for me, but was never that sold on then, design wise.

Some people like my auntie love them but they’ve never really been me.

Mrsredlipstick · 04/05/2024 07:16

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I buy a lot of British goods. I believe there are 37 artisans working in Somerset on the range. I'm classic dresser and nearly 60 so I don't need new designs. There was a rumour they were moving all manufacturing abroad and that will be sad. The bit I don't like is the microfiber lining in the new bags. I also think they should make a few vegan bags.

TitaniasAss · 04/05/2024 08:37

My DH bought me a Mulberry for my 40th and I think I've used it twice. It's a lovely, very well made bag. I don't find it a 'comfortable' bag if that bag if that makes sense. I prefer my Coach bag by a mile.

That has been there years. It used to be there before the Kilver Court place opened.

No. This was the store in Bath city centre. They were at the back of the shop but it was still a surprise.
