Has anyone bought from Shein - and what was the quality like?

Prices seem so low....

There's not many places that are 100% ethical so it's up to you to try op

Iamblossom · 30/04/2024 19:14

Better to go with everything5pounds.com, it's all clothing that already exists

This is true but Shein and Temu are leading the way in terms of how destructive fast fashion is.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 30/04/2024 19:18

There isn't even a genuine resale market for their products as you can buy brand new cheaper so most stuff goes straight to landfill

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 30/04/2024 20:47

I like it - not very MN but some of their stuff is so much nicer than anything I see in the shops...

Luxell934 · 30/04/2024 21:49

Really hit or miss.

I’ve got some nice exercise leggings and swimwear from there. A few nice dresses too, but most is poor quality, strange fit and sometimes looks different from the pictures. I’ve given up buying from there now.

Magpie50 · 30/04/2024 23:31

Hit and miss is right....very much a gamble if you are going to get something wearable or something the quality of a dishrag.
I've tried Shein and Temu, but once was enough!LOL

nickdrakeslovechild · 01/05/2024 08:18

I think it's great. My DD loves it and prefers to shop there than say Primark and we have found the quality so much better than Primark etc too. She has had lots of tshirts, leggings, dresses etc, they have all been worn and worn and wash really well. The stretchy bras are fab and the accessories are lovely. I know its a very marmite place to shop but IMHO it's no worse than most of the high street so I really don't get the hate for it.

Devilsmommy · 01/05/2024 08:21

Definitely hit and miss but all the jeans I've got from them are really good quality as are most of the tops, though I think you can pretty much tell from the pictures if they're going to be crap quality

Many reasons why it really is worse than the high street and a little time spent googling why things are so cheap will provide resources to detail this but a taster -

Fabrics and materials used don't have to comply with any basic safety laws, never mind eco/sustainability best practices,

I don't recall the figure but Shein release something like x 3 more new more new lines than the likes of H & M, Zara and Primark,

A total lack of transparency in the company itself, where it's factories are, the outsourcing model they use on whereby they outsource to one who then outsource to another who then do the same ... you get the picture. Anyway this makes it even more difficult to examine worker conditions and find parties accountable when things are wrong,

Their app is incredibly clever (the CEO of either Shein or Temu is a tech guy by trade) in that it throws offer after offer at you which you'd be daft not to use meaning people straight away are buying Stuff They Don't Need.

Then once a customer has worn their £5 top a few times and decided to donate to charity to feel better about buying new again instead of just wearing this top until it's got no life left, the charity struggles to sell it as customers can of course buy new for same price. Hello landfill Confused

And of course at least our high street chains (who aren't in any perfect are starting to become more accountable) pay tax and generate jobs.

Sorry meant to say -

I don't recall the figure but Shein release something like x 3 more new more new lines than the likes of H & M, Zara and Primark, adding to peoples need to buy more more often. Also causing more environmental damage with manufacturing and shipping

Plump82 · 01/05/2024 10:14

I have a long skirt from shein that I wear regularly. Lovely pattern and washes well etc. Not long after buying it I was on Debenhams website and they were selling exactly the same patterned material but in a dress instead of a skirt. Made me wonder where these more ethical shops are getting their stock.

hazandduck · 01/05/2024 10:20

I have bought jumpers from there genuinely they are softer and wash better than my usual favourites of H&M and New Look. I have bought my daughters embroidered jumpers they are such high quality and I always wash everything I buy first before wearing wherever it’s come from, as you never know where it’s been or what it’s come in to contact with!

Can I ask, does anyone know if the chemicals on these materials wash out in a machine wash? Just confused about how bad these chemicals are or if they are any worse than cheap tops from Primark etc.

I have to admit the quality really shocked me. I buy a lot of secondhand clothes for my family, bundles on eBay etc, but sometimes it is nice to have something new and on a budget Shein ticks the boxes for affordability and quality. I do admit to feeling ashamed of purchasing through them though.

lonelyo · 01/05/2024 10:23

Not a fan. Ordered couple of times but deleted the app so no longer tempted. So hit and miss, had one top that looked like it had been put together with someone's eyes closed, miss matched seams, another top so cheap I was scared it'd set alight with movement!
And my biggest issue of all for me is the ethical side. How can they make it so cheap, and I know way too many people who admit they've had stuff sat in drawers for months with labels on, they'll never wear it and buy more again! Such a waste that will inevitably end in landfill in a third world country sadly

hazandduck · 01/05/2024 11:29

These are the jumpers. The girls got complimented on them when we were out and about, and the jumper I’m wearing is really soft and has been washed a few times now. The jeans DDs are wearing are also from Shein. I would say items are true to size but I always size up as prefer baggier fits.

Infuriating but no one is providing plus size products like shein. They offer so much than the high street does for us fat women!

Disturbia81 · 01/05/2024 12:11

Love everything I buy from them and love that you can pay it in bits. I just can't find the originality or alternativeness in the shops

peachescariad · 01/05/2024 12:17

I've bought a swimsuit, a couple of work tops and a couple of dresses which I've worn over and over and they still look great. Did buy 3 little hand bags, 2 of which weren't great but the third has been used everyday for over 2 years.
I've never bought underwear or shoes.

This reminds me. Best fitting bras and most comfortable invisible knickers I’ve ever bought were from shein, 3 pack of bras for £9, 6 pack of these soft thongs. They look flattering and are so comfortable. And again really good quality!

AlwaysConfused198 · 01/05/2024 12:35

I've never had a bad item from SHEIN. I do feel guilty shopping there but with the current cost of living it's so cheap. I still have everything I have ordered and I find the kids clothes and shoes good quality to! I do spend a lot of time looking at the customers photos on items as gives you a better feel for them

Validus · 01/05/2024 12:36

We’ve only had one ‘miss’ out of everything (a dress turned out a bit weird, but it was immediately repurposed into a nightdress). I’m happy with the quality of what I’ve orders and it’s held up every well. I use it for kids clothes mainly.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/05/2024 12:48

I was Googling an item a few day ago and saw, as often said here, that Temu did it at a fraction of the price. So curious I clicked the link and the first thing that popped up was an window with a spinner. So I clicked it and it landed on a "First 4 items free" thing Confused. I was the pissed that every time I tried to look at an item it sent me to download the app. No thanks, I don't want to do that. But had I wanted those free items I couldn't see how to get round that app.

So yep I know it's not Shein but there isn't much difference in the way they blatantly and without apology encourage mass and probably often, unnecessary consumption with fuck all thought to the social and environmental cost.

And those annoying links people send you so they can get some crappy plastic free gifts.

Disclaimer - I get that for many people they have little to no luxury l of considering anything other than low cost. Absolutely. I wouldn't judge those people.

But for many others I think we need to try and question how the fuck they can do a T shirt way cheaper than anywhere else, delivered. How they can just afford to give so much away.

The planet is burning but hey - we've all got great wadrobes Confused

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/05/2024 12:51

Justine Leconte has some good videos of things to consider with these shops. She's a seamstress by trade with years experience of the fashion industry so I'd anyone wanted to look, I think she's a voice worth considering. And in that lovely French accent Grin

BigFatLiar · 01/05/2024 13:02

Have got some nice stuff from them (and some poor stuff). I have a couple of woolly dresses that are lovely and soft. Other dresses are pretty and ok.

Not too bothered by them not being that great for recycling as I suspect a lot of the stuff passed on is disposed of by the charities anyway.
