Is this really dated?

Girls night out coming up, afternoon tea then a few bars. With Covid then having babies don't feel like I've been out out in so long, I have no idea what to wear! Skinny jeans with a'nice top' and blazer jacket or nice blouse style top with heals would be my go to but is that a really dated look now? Any suggestions? I'm mid 30's, 5ft5" size 12/14. It's a small rural town, not like city night out

I am also mid 30's, and I think that sounds like a good outfit for the occasion!
I can't tell you if it's dated or not, hopefully someone else can.

Have fun!

DoYouSmokePaul · 29/04/2024 22:33

Not sure about heels but depends what type really. I usually wear wide legged jeans with trainers and a white t-shirt with blazer. Nice gold accessories. No idea if it’s fashionable but I think I look good.

Invisimamma · 29/04/2024 22:46

I think that sounds fine, it's a look that doesn't really date.

I don't think many people go out in heels now though, unless it's a very fancy do such as wedding. Perhaps swap for boots or nice clean trainers.

Skinny jeans are said to be out but plenty of people are still wearing them, The blazer is classic. For the top it depends, I'd stay away from patterned, but a neutral colour under a blazer you'll be fine

But wear what you feel good in, that's what matters really.

PlumPeony · 29/04/2024 22:49

Skinny jeans with heels feels dated. What kind of blazer is it? If it's all tight things, that's also dated look.

But as others said, Wear what you feel comfortable!

DonnasShrugaleros · 29/04/2024 22:53

Anything but the floral dress, denim jacket, trainers and cross body bag. These items in their own with something different fine but this uniform is now so tired. Blazer and top sound good but maybe with wider trousers and not heels. Things and longer and looser at the moment.

VibeOnWithMyGalPals · 30/04/2024 12:59

It’s what I sometimes wear on a night out, but yes it is considered “dated”.

A looser fit of jeans, and flats/trainers would be more “in”.
I was out recently in a small, rural town, and the style was very casual.

Jeezitneverends · 30/04/2024 13:07

Definitely not jeans and heels! Jeans, absolutely, but with trainers or other chunky flats

bananaboats · 30/04/2024 14:47

I'm also mid 30s & the outfit sounds like something that would have been a staple a few years back but is quite dated now. I've noticed on recent nights out noone wears heels any more & jeans are definitely baggier styles

BottomlessBrunch · 30/04/2024 14:53

Yes Id say the skinny Jean combo outfits for bottomless brunch are dated. More current ones I'd say are

Wide leg trousers or jeans, trainers (something like Nike dunks or the newer adidas ones out like campus or sambas)
Then a nice bodysuit or t shirt tucked in
Cropped jacket/blazer or cropped trench or leather jacket.

Or midi skirts black denim or black or navy and white striped are quite nice again with trainers or high top converse with a nice high necked vest top or bodysuit , then same as before with the jackets.

desperatedaysareover · 30/04/2024 14:54

Frankly, they’ll have to prize my skinnies from my cold fat arse, I’m a 14 so not particularly large but I feel like a denim bouncy castle in mom jeans or baggies. Apparently the key to not looking dated is that they’re not to be too tight round the ankle. I second maybe not heels, I see them so seldom they can look weird to me now (unless it’s a very formal occasion) but to be honest if you can walk confidently in them and they make you feel good, who cares.

Precipice · 30/04/2024 15:09

What is it that you fear when you fear looking 'dated'? That others will be dressed in a way that is different than how you are dressed?

Is this an outfit you feel comfortable in and think looks good on you?

You say you haven't been out but have you seen how your friends dress? Do you like how they dress? Did you like how they dressed before? Even if you have divergent tastes now, you may always have had divergent tastes. If one of you likes colours and patterns, something bright, and the other likes black-beige-white, you're always going to be dressed a bit differently.

I would choose some flat shoes rather than heels. I always thought heels looked odd because of the odd position they force the foot into, but aside from that, I see them very rarely now.

Shopper727 · 30/04/2024 16:02

These wide leg things don’t suit everyone I’m short and they make me look shorter and fatter than I am and I just don’t feel comfy in them. I don’t think nice jeans and a top is dated it’s just clothes, I believe in wearing what you like and feel comfy/happy in. Plenty people out in jeans and a nice top, and shock horror heels too last time I was out for drinks. Was a mixed bar so styles ranged from totally done up to jeans and a top etc to me in jeans a hoody and trainers, I felt pretty scruffy but hadn’t intended drinking.
enjoy and I’m sure you’ll look lovely 🥰

Brackenfield · 30/04/2024 16:04

I'm mid 30's and yes I'd say that's dated. I can't think when I last saw anyone in heels, and skinny jeans are rare as well, ditto blazer. It hardly matters though if you like it and are comfortable

VibeOnWithMyGalPals · 30/04/2024 16:44

What about wedges? Are they dated? I don’t think so, based on the fact that they’re literally everywhere (for sale, I mean).

sweetpickle2 · 30/04/2024 16:50

It's dated in as much as it's not something Gen Z would wear, but you're not Gen Z! If you feel comfortable and good in it then that's the most important thing (and if you're not going out in a city any discrepancy in dressiness will be less noticeable anyway)

Broodywuz · 05/05/2024 21:16

Thanks everyone. I've got a pair of flare jeans, wide/baggy aren't particularly flattering on me and a pair of wedge sandals. Not sure I can quite bring myself to go out out in trainers. Now I just sound dated haha

OP posts:
PlumPeony · 05/05/2024 21:45

I'd say flare jeans, and go for the trainers, once you start doing it, you won't go back (much more comfortable!)

DoYouSmokePaul · 05/05/2024 22:26

I wore pink trainers with a sequinned gown to my brother’s wedding last month. They’re the future 💖

Tgph · 05/05/2024 23:27

Hiii :)
i think it is a little dated but if you enjoy it WEAR IT!!! Have fun!
but if you really want to change it out, I would recommend going for a wide leg/flared jean. And to scrap the blazer and swap it with a leather/denim jacket! Xoxo
im 19 so everyone is wearing outfits similar when going out for drink and a meal :)
have fun!! You deserve it!

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 06/05/2024 07:32

I wouldn't wear jeans of any sort for afternoon tea, you want to look on the smarter side of casual. Also no to denim jacket (unless with a dress or trousers) and no trainers.

It really does depend where you're going for afternoon tea though. Round where I am, jeans and trainers would be a no for afternoon tea especially in the hotels and some of the pubs/bars/restaurants (we have some rather fancy places and we aren't in the city).

If you're going to a café or coffee shop style place then fine go with jeans and trainers.

People make the effort for afternoon tea.

Maising · 06/05/2024 10:15

I went to a bottomless supper recently and used to wear the kind of outfit you described, so I tried to make little updates so I still felt comfortable but more current.

My jeans were boyfit rather than skinny
I wore block heel sandals like the Esskas
Top was a loose fit sequin tee tucked in

bradpittsbathwater · 06/05/2024 10:18

I don't think they are back as such. Fashion usually goes in 20 year cycles at least. They were all the rage 10 years ago. Something in fashion 10-15 years ago tends to look "dated". I think skinnies are more of a classic though. Definitely uniform among middle aged women.

bradpittsbathwater · 06/05/2024 10:18

But I do see younger women wearing them too sometimes.

Pigeonqueen · 06/05/2024 10:20

I wouldn’t wear skinny jeans and heels. Yes they’re still in all the shops but the trend seems to be for wide leg jeans and trainers / loafers / flat square ballerinas.
