Is this really dated?

Girls night out coming up, afternoon tea then a few bars. With Covid then having babies don't feel like I've been out out in so long, I have no idea what to wear! Skinny jeans with a'nice top' and blazer jacket or nice blouse style top with heals would be my go to but is that a really dated look now? Any suggestions? I'm mid 30's, 5ft5" size 12/14. It's a small rural town, not like city night out

@ beingjulia on TikTok has tons of really good videos where she takes classic ‘millennial’ outfits and shows you how to update them.

If you don't suit wide-legged jeans, just changing to a straight leg will make the outfit less dated.

I'd go with tan or coloured loafers, or trainers, instead of heels.

I wouldn’t wear skinny jeans and heels. Yes they’re still in all the shops but the trend seems to be for wide leg jeans and trainers / loafers / flat square ballerinas.

I won't wear anything that doesn't flatter me and definitely not because it's on trend.

I'm not that age group, but my experience of loose fitting long jackets is that they are unflattering and hideous. Wide leg jeans or trousers, chinos on my case, much better.

They've said Kate Moss is seen out in skinny jeans and shown a picture of Kate Moss wearing slim leg not skinnies 😂

Scroll through here, @Broodywuz, for more up to date styling. I’d think the first; dark top and trousers, or second outfit; wide jeans and a cropped white jacket, would be great for your afternoon / evening.

It’s hard to change to a completely different silhouette - OP, how about ditching the heels but keeping the skinnies, if that’s how you feel comfortable? The fashion press insist skinnies are over, but I still see plenty of people wearing them.

DreadPirateRobots · 07/05/2024 18:38

Yes, that's a notably dated look now. You don't have to care about that, it's your call, but it's exactly the outfit I guessed you would be asking about when I read your thread title.

I second PP suggesting that you wear straight/slim-leg jeans and flats of some kind as an alternative if you want to be a bit more current.

RogueFemale · 07/05/2024 18:45

Wear what suits you and what you feel comfortable with. Being 'fashionable' is pointless if the look doesn't suit you - there are some really fugly jeans out there which I would look ridiculous and frumpy in. So I stick with my skinny jeans and nice top, and yes, even [ankle boots with] heels with skinny jeans sometimes (if I won't have to walk much).

I’m 35 & currently 9 months pregnant and would give anything to slip into a pair of my skinny jeans and heels! I don’t think I’ll ever wear trainers to anything I wouldn’t be wearing joggers or gym clothes to - just not my cup of tea.

You don’t need to wear what’s “in”, especially if it’s going to cost a lot to replace what you have and you’re going to feel uncomfortable and not like yourself.

You wear the clothes you love and have a great day!
