Help me look ‘put together’

I’m 43, a stone overweight, my hair is starting to grey which I don’t mind but it’s becoming wiry and I just tie it back, my skin isn’t good. I suffer with depression and feel like it shows, when I’m not at work I’m in joggers and hoodies & look scruffy a family member said recently. Other than losing the weight, I feel like I don’t know where to start but I hope that looking more ‘put together’ might help me feel better during my darker periods. Can anyone relate and offer advice?

Re suddenly wiry hair - I find a couple of squirts of hair oil (don't overdo it) rubbed between my palms and then scrunched through my hair before blow drying makes a difference. I use a Pantene one.

Agree. I've got super-fine hair but the Liz Earle hair oil is great and doesn't weigh it down. It's pricey, but lasts ages.

Good hair can make such a big difference to how you look so I'd be starting with that. You also don't need to spend a fortune on skincare, the ordinary products are very good and really reasonably priced, you can buy a suite of products to help a concern, such as anti ageing or brightening dull skin.

As for the clothes, there is nothing wrong with hoodies or joggers and being comfortable. Wearing them together is harder to pull off though, could you wear a hoodie with a pair of thick black leggings rather than bagger joggers? Or M & S do some nice jersey wide leg trousers which are super comfy and casual, like these. You can't go wrong with a pair of nice white trainers to go with them.

When do you use hair oil? I’ve never thought to do this - I think a hangover from avoiding it in my 20s as my hair was prone to being greasy then…but that was a long time ago?

Special pillow case (satin or silk) for frizzy hair like I’m seeing on Instagram or waste of money?

I don’t use conditioner but instead use a pump of hair oil on damp hair before drying.

@Squirrelblanket I recommend Enily Innes / style me happy (Instagram), she offers quite affordable service

John Frieds hair serum is very good and affordable. Just be careful that one squirt is enough. For some people it works better on wet hair before drying but for others it is easier to put it on after the hair is dry and you can see the impact

Some good tips on here, I already do most of them, intermittently though 🤣

Ive been using silk pillowcases for about 10 years, apart from anything else they feel lovely to sleep on so treat yourself if you have the budget - I usually buy mine from Amazon, about £25 each.

Stud earrings and a tinted lip balm are my quick go to’s for feeling a bit more groomed on very lazy days - do always find a light nail polish instantly makes me feel better too.

A stone overweight is nothing too if you do want to try to lose it.
