I just counted all my dresses…

And I have almost 60! I knew I had a lot but I’m still shocked at the total.

That does include some dresses which may only get worn once every couple of years (wedding guest / ballgown / cocktail / funeral attendee type dresses) but most are more everyday or work type dresses which tend to be worn more frequently.

I’ve just gone through them all with the aim of being totally ruthless and sending any I no longer like to the charity shop. At the end of this process I’ve managed to get rid of a grand total of…one dress 🤦‍♀️

In my defence, I think almost half of them are second hand and some are over ten years old, but I still like them and they still fit so it seems silly to get rid of them.

AND I only have two pairs of jeans and no other trousers except sports leggings. I guess I’m just a dress person.

How many dresses do you own? Please tell me I’m not the only one??

I'm not a dress person and just went to check my wardrobe thinking it would be less than 10. Turns out I have 14. I wear them very rarely and have had some for years and years (and not worn some for years either). I tend to wear them only when it's very hot in summer, when I'm on holiday somewhere hot (to wear out for meals) or very occasionally, for a special occasion.

I don't like my skinny legs and don't like to wear the kind of shoes you usually wear with dresses. If I can get away with ankle boots, trainers or flat sandals, then I don't mind wearing dresses as much.

Anyway, virtually no one where I work wears dresses or even skirts. Mostly trousers and trainers.

Same!
However some of my 'dresses' are quite short so work equally well worn with jeans. They just look like oversized tops. Not sure if those count.

mathanxiety · 20/04/2024 23:31

10

They're all for specific occasions - summer wedding, winter wedding, summer / winter other formal occasion, summer/ winter wake or funeral, summer/ winter general party, less formal, and summer casual.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 20/04/2024 23:37

32 dresses.
But loads are summer dresses.. l go abroad a lot.
Two pairs of Mum jeans
9 pairs of trousers.
Two pairs of crop trousers.
16 tops.
8 cardigans.
11 coats/ jackets
5 pairs of trainers.
5 pairs of sandals
3 pairs flip flops.
8 pairs of shoes.
I know all this because I've been sorting out and put some clothes on vinted... l had more than the list.
I have four wardrobes to myself.

AnnieSF · 20/04/2024 23:51

I think I have about 40-50 but most are for holidays in hot countries. I have one skirt which I haven't worn yet.

LunaTheCat · 21/04/2024 00:01

I am too scared to count mine!
I love a dress.. and a cardi too… 🤣🤣
I have clearly winter and summer ones but many are trans-seasonal.
I am short and a size 14 and they are more flattering than separates.
I collect my favourite designers online second hand.

PotatoPudding · 21/04/2024 00:02

I don’t own a single dress but I have managed to whittle my jeans collection down to 22 pairs, with two of those pairs about to go on Vinted.

MotherofGorgons · 21/04/2024 06:05

Maybe 8? I only have 2 pairs of jeans and maybe 5 trousers too. I am not keen on a large wardrobe for various reasons.

daisychain01 · 21/04/2024 06:13

I love this thread! Thought I had wayyyy too many dresses at about 16 at last count) so 60 😱but in my defence, I get use out of all of them as I've started wearing dresses to work much more, with coordinating cardi and scarf and I enjoy them a lot (and even get a few compliments, so all good,👍

my latest one is this, which I recently got in a 25% off sale, and wear it with the wrap over belt, it's a very good quality jersey and hangs beautifully.

For all of you that wear so many dresses, can you post pics/links of what shoes you wear please that are flat/casual?
I’d love to wear more dresses but have no clue what to put on my feet other than fit flops or pumps.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/04/2024 07:46

@daisychain01 that's a really nice dress - in real life is it more corally/red or more orange please?

@ItSucksSo over winter I have been wearing a double strap pair of boxy Mary Jane's, loafers or lace up ankle boots. In summer: some comfy and not too dainty sandals or lighter loafers - I'll try to find some links.

TitInATrance · 21/04/2024 07:49

I have 31, including everything from formal to beach coverup to funeral attire.
In any particular category e.g. long sleeve winter or ‘going out to dinner’ there are no more than half a dozen.
About a third are more than 5 years old and are only there ‘just in case’.

My T-shirt collection is very similar.

lissie123 · 21/04/2024 07:57

I probably have about 50 dresses. A lot for work but others for weddings funeral events. Some though are stage type dresses but most of those are in the loft now. I possess one skirt cos I just struggle to coordinate tops/skirts.

Thethruththewholetruth · 21/04/2024 09:39

92! Mostly summer but some winter ones. I think I have too many clothes! If you love them, keep them!

Imnotarestaurant · 21/04/2024 09:40

65ish. But that’s summer, winter and in between, holiday dresses, work and casual and a few dressy dresses. I find dresses much easier to wear than separates.

willowstar · 21/04/2024 10:57

@ItSucksSo

I have terrible problems with my feet due to flat foot and arthritis so I can't wear heals or anything pointy and am really restricted to footwear I can wear rigid orthotics in. So a bit niche perhaps, but I wear

Doc Martin boots. I have these I have been stomping around in this winter https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/dr-martens-audrick-black-boots/1540367020/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces-across-google&utm_campaign=organic-shopping&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8pKxBhD_ARIsAPrG45nefB7Efeo7WxecRw8MUr_8Vqmr05Db-Eq_OXEO_37vUyiZwrA7r3UaAqchEALw_wcB

And a couple of pairs of chunky soles boots from Gabor, ankle high and knee high.

In summer I wear comfy trainers, I have a few pairs of Nike and Adidas in cool combinations. I have a pair of Doc Martin sandals but as I can't wear orthotics with sandals I hardly wear them.

Having foot problems is a pain. I could never be in the Royal Family😄

Mary7241 · 21/04/2024 12:06

I probably have 50-60, sizes from 14-20, all of which I’ve been in in the last two years thanks to pregnancy and breastfeeding though there’s a lot of them now that aren’t suitable necklines, a lack of access
I’m really torn between making way and selling them - don’t know how much they’d go for though- and just accepting I’ll have them and reevaluate whether they fit and feel right in a year or so

I’d love to wear more dresses but have no clue what to put on my feet other than fit flops or pumps.

I find Pinterest good for that. Search for different things eg 'Autumn dresses with court shoes' or 'Spring dresses with pumps' 😀
