Help with foundation

BirtyDird · 18/04/2024 19:04

I'm on the hunt for a nice day time foundation. I wore Estee Lauder double wear for years, but I hate how it feels on my skin now.

I treated myself to the Bobbi Brown lightweight long wear foundation earlier this year. I got sucked into the counter experience and bought it. When I used it at home with my own skincare products it just looked terrible, patchy and also too pale, so at £42 a big waste of money.

I wear charlotte tilbury airbrush flawless for nights out and occasions, but I'm looking for something lighter for during the day. Any suggestions for £40ish and under?

I'm into Eborian right now

CC cream is the nudest (have)
Then BB (have)
Then super BB is the heaviest (don't have)

Its a complete contrast to ELDW sucking the Last ounce of moisture from you skin

Also it cheap but the No 7 hydraluminois is good.

ASighMadeOfStone · 18/04/2024 20:13

Hydraluminous here too.
Or the Erborian BB

AnneShirleysNewDress · 18/04/2024 20:13

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk. Nicely glowy and lightweight.

olivebranch31 · 18/04/2024 20:15

Another vote for luminous silk, and the Nars light reflecting one

TrtseHkpr · 18/04/2024 20:17

Maybelline Super Stay is very good, and won't break the bank. The 24 hour version has a more dewy finish, the 30 hour version is more matte. Both last really well. Il Makiage is spendy but lasts all day/night and has a lovely finish.

suki1964 · 18/04/2024 20:22

No 7 hydraluminois is really good but it really does depend on age, skin worries, the finish you want, your skin care regime , how much time you have

I was loving the above for the coverage and colour, but it settled into my lines - as a waitress I dont get time for touch ups, but for evenings or just a few hours - love it ( mature drier skin with oily t-zone and red cheeks )

Right now Im using Laura Gellar for work. Its a light/medium coverage and yes I still get t-zone shine whilst working but I cant feel it so for me thats the compromise Im willing to accept. I want my skin to look like skin and not like Ive plastered the slap on, and DW was looking like that on me

BirtyDird · 18/04/2024 20:50

Thank you so far for all the suggestions.
I probably should have added my skin type into the post! I Can't edit now, but I have oily skin and mid 30s.

I think this is why EL was good for me, it never looked dry on me ,but I just can't bare how thick it feels anymore.

I've seen a few suggestions for Armini and Nars sheer glow , has anyone tried these with oily skin types?

Never heard of Eborian so thanks I'll have a look, and also at the .No 7 hydraluminois.

Those Il Makiage ads always make me tempted, but I'm always skeptical about it.

Il Makiage is terrible, I fell for the beauty filtered advert and it made me look like a cracked crème brûlée. I have oily skin and I find glowy foundations set with powder much better for avoiding cakiness.

irishmurdoch · 18/04/2024 21:05

Have read some good reviews for Laura Mercier, about to try it myself... but then I'm menopausal and looking for something that doesn't flake or settle into creases (can't even call them lines anymore!)

As someone a lot older, theres only one of my friends who recommends Il Makiage

Theres another one from amazon , about £10 and actually I loved the coverage - magical tbh, only its full on and i dont like that feel (great coverage all the same and colour match was really good ) Its called Wet and Wild, it is really good

Which would you say is better for skin with blemishes, a BB or CC? I suffer hormonal acne, so I get breakouts often around my chin 😔

I know I'll probably need to use a concealer either way, that's the problem when you go for a lighter foundation !

I use the Estee lauder hydra-something foundation and primer in the same shade as my DW. Slightly lighter coverage, decent staying power, doesn't crease, higher spf.

BB (blemish balm originally , but the word "blemish" doesn't market well, so they're usually referred to as "beauty balms" now) creams are generally fuller coverage than CC. (Colour correction)
That said, one of the fullest coverage bases I own (that is so full I only use it as a top up on redder bits or if I have to keep my face on for a wedding or sth) is IT Cosmetics CC. I'd say the coverage on that is about the same as ELDW but softer and less drying.

thedendrochronologist · 19/04/2024 17:58

@BirtyDird

I think the SUPER BB would be the fullest coverage and the also they Do a super bb concealer!

TWmover · 19/04/2024 18:46

Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturiser. It has a more coverage than standard tinted moisturisers but not heavy like double wear.

londonmummy1966 · 19/04/2024 19:08

I quite like Skin in Motion tinted moisturiser - its blendable/buildable and the companion concealer is good too. It also stays put - I ran the London Marathon in it last year and didn't need to touch it up before going out to supper.

Can i ask what would be the reason to go for the oil-free version over the other one? Is it just for a more matte effect? I prefer that to a 'dewy' effect, but I'm wondering at the same time if that one might be more likely to 'cake' in my lines than the oil-based one...

irishmurdoch · 20/04/2024 00:25

@TWmover forgot to tag you in the post above!

Fiftiesishard · 20/04/2024 00:47

Used to wear ELDW Lite (I think that's what it was called!) before they stopped making it. Then had the No 7 Hydraluminous, liked that for a couple of years but noticed I was quite shiny recently, so switched to Armani Luminous Silk after recommendations on here. It's fab. Have (mild) hormonal rosacea occasionally which it covers - it's light but buildable if you need it.

I have similar skin to yours and I had to change foundation because I hated the heavy feeling !
I went to the boots no 7 counter and I had a sample pot of stay perfect !
it’s been so good it’s very sheer but in a weird way still covers light blemishes with a lovely finish it’s very light I got the matching concealer stick and use that when I have worse blemishes I have hormonal acne and redness ! And people have commented on how nice my skin looks , which I’m surprised at because I don’t have the best skin because of hormones! X

BirtyDird · 01/05/2024 17:07

I tried a sample of the No 7 Hydraluminous this week and so far I'm loving it and think I'm going to buy it . It has given me a lovely glow without looking too shiny, stayed I'm place and it feels really light on my skin. Thanks to those who recommended it 👌

Is there any way to get a sample of Armani luminous silk? I'm unable to get to any store which has it and don't want to risk ebay/vinted

The super BB is best for spots and fuller coverage.

I use Erborian BB. I used to use Clinique Even Better foundation and ELDW Light (and loads more - I'm a beauty product addict) but have been converted to Erborian. I started with the 15ml tubes but have just ordered the full size one. Currently on offer on Boots website. It really does go on easily and give nice, natural coverage.

WhereAreWeNow · 01/05/2024 20:06

Just to add, I think lighter BB/foundation and targeted concealer is the way to go with spots @BirtyDird . Lisa Eldridge has a really good video tutorial on it. A really good concealer and brush is much better than a full face of heavy coverage make up.

I too like the hydra luminous. Gives just about the right coverage and a great colour range

Unfortunately for me it settles - as do so many foundations - in my lines and wrinkles , and especially on dry patches - Im working on a better skin care regime so I can wear it with confidence again
