Hair product help- menopausal, thin, frizzy

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 13/04/2024 08:55

I have always had thin hair, but it is getting worse. (Thanks menopause).

Recommendations please for hair product(s) to use to blow dry. Currently using Tresemme heat protect spray and then a mousse at roots (found Worthington Thicker/Fuller one made it frizzy, have gone back to V05 but it isn't great).

Hair is just below chin length, if that makes a difference?

I take Perfectil supplement, too. Not sure if it is making any difference but will keep taking it in case!

Thank you :)

I have tried almost everything out there.

Olapllex 3 is good but really only for bleached hair.

Aveda invanti is also good.
Nioxin thinning hair system is very good. Can buy it in TK Maxx sometimes.

My regime and has been this for a while-
Aveda damage control shampoo, any cheap conditioner on the ends. Finish with a cold rinse.
Rosemary oil on the scalp/3 times a week. Hair mask 2/wk. Any mask is fine. The banana one is good- garnier?

styling
inkey list BCA Bond repair treatment on damp hair through the mid lengths and ends.
Aveda thickening tonic- spray all
over then comb through with a bamboo comb let hair air dry for a little bit then dry on a cool and fast
setting with my parlux hair dryer. This is key- a powerful hair dryer will dry it fast with limited damage. I use a huge barrel brush to give body.
if I am going out out sometimes I use Bastise dry shampoo on the ends to give my hair some grip/texture/thickness. This really works.
hair cuts often into a blunt cut. No bleaching.

I also take a biotin supplement.

is this the hair thinning system?

How you you use Rosemary oil on the scalp? Do you mix it with other oils?
So hairs gets washed every time you use the rosemary oil

I buy an oil from Amazon and use it with an old pipette from a face serum. Them one of those spikes massage tools to gently massage my scalp.

I wash my hair most days because I exercise a lot and sweat a lot!

Oh brilliant. Im getting it.
thank you!

The Aveda botanical repair strengthening leave in treatment has really helped the texture and condition of my hair. I use it most of the time before blow drying. I would also use a leave in pre wash type conditioner every fortnight. The Philip Kingsley elasticizer one is great but also the garnier hair mask ones are good (& lot less expensive) Philip Kingsley body building shampoo and conditioner are great for volume without weighing hair down but usually I just use the loreal serie expert (buy huge bottles from amazon)
Latest find is the color wow range. The dream cocktail smoothing treatment with the dream coat spray makes my hair feel fuller and smoother and I barely need to use the straighteners at all which is brilliant.

Hair dresser has commented that my hair feels thicker and looks healthier last few times I've been in

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 26/05/2024 17:56

I think I have a sample size of Philip Kingsley elasticiser. I’ll try that next. Any tips for using it?

All week I’ve been using L’Oréal hyaluronic acid conditioner and shampoo and my hair was frizzy. I’ve switched to plantur 39 and it’s much sleeker at the top but frizzy on the bottom and still thin looking.

Dampen your hair , apply from near the roots ( not on the scalp ) to the ends , easier with your hair in sections .
Wrap your hair in clingfilm or a plastic shower cap and a towel or towel wrap . You can leave it in 20 minutes up to overnight then rinse well .
Depends on how your hair is either just rinse or use your shampoo/conditioner .

It's a love it / hate it product .

I've just bought some more PK Itchy Flakey Scalp shampoo for my DS - best price I found was Looks Fantastic

My hairdresser has introduced me to K18.
My hair is pretty fucked up due to health issues/medication. This has made a vast difference in the last month.

LooneyLiberalSpaceWaster · 26/05/2024 18:57

Black seed oil, its amazing. I have very thick coarse and prone to frizz wavy hair. Not only does it deal with frizz and prevent humidity from making a puff ball of my hair, it has made my hair grow even thicker. And it's natural.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 26/05/2024 22:58

@70isaLimitNotaTarget
thank you so much for that. I will give that a go.

@LooneyLiberalSpaceWaster ive been reading up on black seed oil and it sounds amazing for all kinds of ailments. Incl cholesterol and BP.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 27/05/2024 07:22

I use Aveda too, their products work so well.

Following!

OP - same same. I was discussing this with my consultant dermatologist (the meds I’m on also impact my hair). Her advice:

  • there’s little evidence biotin makes any difference. I’ve been taking it for 2 months and haven’t noticed any difference. She also said to be wary of the swathe of social media advertised products there are at the moment.
  • Nioxin shampoo and scalp treatment as it strengthens the hair and encourages new growth - I’ve been using this for years and have found it better than any other volumising shampoo (and I’ve tried a few suggested on this thread). It’s also stopped the shred (I used to lose a lot of hair with every wash)
  • the best volumising spray I’ve found that doesn’t give me scalp eczema is Nioxin
  • blow drying with a hot air brush is a great way to build in volume but important to use a heat protector spray. I find John Frieda pro hair spray good as it doesn’t flatten my hair like a lot of heat protectors. I also use a bit of the JF mousse.

Having tried a LOT of volumising sprays (inc Aveda which totally flattened my hair), I like the Living proof range - they do a volume spray. I also like the Philip K dry shampoo.

For a night out I can give myself reasonable volume and shiny hair. If I don’t bother with the sprays, it’s flat. It’s healthy hair though, no split ends etc.

Good luck Op - I envy women with thick hair so much and have even thought of extensions in the future….

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 30/05/2024 00:31

Very excited my nioxin has arrived.
if it works I’ll have to look for a cheaper source. I paid £43 for a starter pack.

I have always had fine hair but pre menopause it was so sleek and shiny, it really was lovely condition, now my hair is my user name, it really has turned into fine coarse wire wool and nothing seems to help, it’s a difficult combination because I still need volume/body as it’s fine (and still gets greasy at the roots), but volume products make it worse. I hate brushing my hair it’s sounds and feels like I’m dragging a brush through barbed wire.

Love the username, perfect description. This is me too - my hair has become this coarse, wiry, frizzy mass that doesn’t respond to anything I put on it. Thickening products make it worse and I’ve blown a fortune on trying them all out. My diet is good too, Mediterranean, with plenty of good fats, so I can only put it down to the menopause and hope that like puberty, it’s a transitional phase 😄

TwilightSkies · 30/05/2024 06:46

OP make sure your diet is really good before you spend a lot on hair products.
Also, you should try a warm olive oil scalp massage at least twice a week, then leave the oil on overnight before washing in the morning.
