Fashion- gone or am I missing it

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 22:27

At the risk of sounding like an old codger I seem to remember fashion trends as being more full on- mini skirts, rara skirts, pencil skirts, shoulder pads, grunge

Now I do not seem to find a trend.
Granted I mostly see younger ladies at the gym where they are wearing gym clothes but I have no idea what the fashionable trends are?

Disclaimer -I will probably still carry on wearing clothes I like regardless!
But I am curious

Am I just missing it or has the push for certain styles per season declined?

I think trends live and die a lot more quickly these days, social media makes trends happen so much more quickly, and fast fashion delivers on those trends super quickly. But then a week or two later something else comes along.

I feel like clothing trends lasted a lot longer when I was younger, because it took longer for them to take off in the first place, clothing styles were in the shops for longer, media moved more slowly etc etc.

IDontHateRainbows · 11/04/2024 22:34

Clothes were more expensive relatively speaking. Meaning people could only buy a few things each year not loads of everything.

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 22:36

True
And do not get me wrong - considering the time i had to think about it / save up for it I am nor sure the mod stripy blazer or the gypsy skirt were worthwhile

It's all shite Op.

I was in Zara and h&m today and it's just rails of viscose and polyester.
I swear if I see another bloody shirt dress, cropped top, shapeless jumper or wide leg jean, I'll punch my own face.

Everything is just so boring.

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 22:39

But does that mean I am

  1. classic ( I wish)
  2. Stuck in a rut
  3. Oblivious to the current trends?

Might say later on what i wear and then get slated!

katmarie · 11/04/2024 22:50

I'm a bit of option 2, a bit of option 3 I think! I wear things I think fit well and look good on me, but I rarely buy clothes in high street shops anymore. My budget is more charity shop/vinted! So I'm inevitably a bit behind the curve.

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 22:55

I am sure I am well behind the curve.
I like natural fabrics- wool, cotton, silk, leather
I like a dress, ideally fitted or not too poofy
Cannot be bothered with big collars, puff sleeves, or anything that has a waist under my boobs
I am an old fart aren't I?

There’s a freedom in it, though OP. Anything goes, really.

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 22:57

If that means I do not look like a throwback @LunaNorth I will take it thank you

When will the Teletubbies/tracksuit bottoms/lounge wear trend end? It looks ok on young bodies, anything would, but I’m in my 50s, imagine if I dressed like that.

Sagittarius · 11/04/2024 22:58

The most obvious trend I can think of is wearing white crew socks over the top of gym leggings.

nothingsforgotten · 11/04/2024 22:58

I think fashion was far more fun in my youth, but not very ethical. What was the height of fashion one year you wouldn't have been seen dead in the next - what did we do with our out of fashion clothes?? There isn't the same joy in clothes shopping now all the same.

I agree about all the polyester and viscose clothes now. I was looking at jumpers recently, they cost a small fortune and had a lot of acrylic in them. No way am I paying a king's ransom for man made fibres. I generally stick to linen and merino these days, cotton is becoming more difficult to find.

Dabralor · 11/04/2024 22:59

What about Cos and Uniqlo Op? They might be just what you need! Bit more pricey for Cos but maybe it lasts longer?

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 23:05

Hi @Dabralor
I do have some Uniqlo jumper but I am put off somewhat by bad reports of their return service,
Actually my issue is not so much where to get new stuff it is do I need new stuff?
Do I look dated?
Are there key seasonal things I should try to update my look with?

Otherwise happy in jeans and a nice cosy cashmere jumper, or a merino dress and a leather jacket or coatigan.

Does wearing a wrap dress make me a granny?

Dabralor · 11/04/2024 23:10

Sounds like you have lovely stuff already.
I'm 43 and I'm finding it really hard to know what fashion I am supposed to like - I also struggle to find things that look nice on my increasingly weird-looking triangular shaped body.

So, if you have a look that you're happy with and feel good in, just keep with it!

Honestly, unless you want to look like a chair covered in old washing from 1995, I'd avoid the high street generally.
(Not saying you look like a chair- I definitely did in the Zara fitting room today though.)

dearohdearwhatdowehavehere · 11/04/2024 23:16

I initially read that as -' I will probably still carry on wearing clothes regardless' 😂

Honestly if you are wearing anything with any shape or anything that has had actual design go into it these days, then you'll be distinctly unfashionable.

You need to either be wearing those weird arsehole pucker porngym leggings or be slobbing about in ridiculous baggy shite like you've just climbed out of a biffa bin.

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 23:23

I promise you no arsehole pucker leggings!
Happy for something new though.

I do not want to be in a rut- but damn it I have a very comfy rut

OP posts:
Breadcat24 · 11/04/2024 23:31

@Dabralor kind of you to say that

OP posts:
WannabeHealthier · 11/04/2024 23:34

The things I know are in fashion, but wouldn’t be seen dead in…

Sliders with white gym socks

Shapeless sack dresses with no shape whatsoever, which make me look ginormous

Leather harnesses worn over shirts/ dresses/ jackets that have a whiff of S&M gear

Bumbags worn as shoulder bags

Light pastel colours… baby blue, lilac, lemon

Hip padding in your underwear to make you look XXL size around the middle (WTAF!)

Big puffy sleeves- bigger the better

Disclaimer: some of these may already be out of fashion, so don’t take my word for it as you all rush out to stock up 😂

Totally agree. There's just rails of beige and cream as well. There's no cheeky detail.

fedupwithbeingcold · 11/04/2024 23:48

For what I've observed, this year is about White, shirt dresses, big earrings, long denim skirts, shapeless jackets.

That's the impression I've got

Comedycook · 11/04/2024 23:52

I understand op. I don't know what's in fashion. Is it because I'm now an old lady or is it because there isn't really defined trends like there used to be?

I also feel like this about music. 😂

Runnerinthenight · 11/04/2024 23:57

I am early 60s 😮and I wear clothes the same way I always did - ones that flatter my figure. I like decent quality and I don't shop in chain stores. I'm told I'm quite stylish...!

oobedobe · 12/04/2024 00:18

Things I think are somewhat fashionable and will update your look:

(not the cutting edge of fashion, just some thoughts) Also I live in Canada so trend are usually a year or so behind...

Wide leg jeans or trousers, cropped or not. Barrel leg jeans.

Athleisure (yep I said it), think adidas stripes, or sports tops. Also bright colours like lime green

Trainers (still and maybe always), classic white not going anywhere yet, also coloured trainers, ugly trainers, hiking type trainers like Salomon or On Cloud.

Loafers, chunky sandals.

Boxy tees (not midrift baring); don't suit everyone but definitely look more modern

Cargo type boxy jackets

Long denim skirts like last summer

Crochet stuff or netted jumpers/tops

This list is driven by my own style which is probably mostly boring/simple with the odd updated piece, also a very casual dresser, no workwear.

I'd be interested to hear others take on current fashion for say the over 25 year olds (not 16 year olds).

Doingmybest12 · 12/04/2024 00:33

I think anything goes really so there isn't one on trend look anymore and it's a mishmash of recycled styles. I think it's perhaps in the detail more for younger people(teens) which I guess you know if you've got teens but others might not spot. Part of me thinks it's great that it's much more casual and less tribal, another part of me thinks its a bit dull and a shame, a bit bland.
