Fashion- gone or am I missing it

At the risk of sounding like an old codger I seem to remember fashion trends as being more full on- mini skirts, rara skirts, pencil skirts, shoulder pads, grunge

Now I do not seem to find a trend.
Granted I mostly see younger ladies at the gym where they are wearing gym clothes but I have no idea what the fashionable trends are?

Disclaimer -I will probably still carry on wearing clothes I like regardless!
But I am curious

Am I just missing it or has the push for certain styles per season declined?

I think athleisure morphed into loungewear-as-actual-clothing during Covid and the trend for things being shapeless and comfortable isn't going away any time soon. Even at the apparent other end of the scale - expensive flouncy dresses using yards of fabric - oversized, unfitted and comfortable still seems to be the key thing; actually, even tailoring is boxy and oversized. I feel completely out of touch with fashion at the moment as none of this is my thing, and admit to raising my eyebrows at the idea of smart joggers.

The things I know are in fashion, but wouldn’t be seen dead in…

Sliders with white gym socks

Shapeless sack dresses with no shape whatsoever, which make me look ginormous

Leather harnesses worn over shirts/ dresses/ jackets that have a whiff of S&M gear

Bumbags worn as shoulder bags

Light pastel colours… baby blue, lilac, lemon

Hip padding in your underwear to make you look XXL size around the middle (WTAF!)

Big puffy sleeves- bigger the better

Disclaimer: some of these may already be out of fashion, so don’t take my word for it as you all rush out to stock up 😂

Edited

Where do you see all of this?
The only one I've seen is the bum bag across the shoulder, for both men and women.

Things I think are somewhat fashionable and will update your look:

(not the cutting edge of fashion, just some thoughts) Also I live in Canada so trend are usually a year or so behind...

Wide leg jeans or trousers, cropped or not. Barrel leg jeans.

Athleisure (yep I said it), think adidas stripes, or sports tops. Also bright colours like lime green

Trainers (still and maybe always), classic white not going anywhere yet, also coloured trainers, ugly trainers, hiking type trainers like Salomon or On Cloud.

Loafers, chunky sandals.

Boxy tees (not midrift baring); don't suit everyone but definitely look more modern

Cargo type boxy jackets

Long denim skirts like last summer

Crochet stuff or netted jumpers/tops

This list is driven by my own style which is probably mostly boring/simple with the odd updated piece, also a very casual dresser, no workwear.

I'd be interested to hear others take on current fashion for say the over 25 year olds (not 16 year olds).

I've bought my first long denim skirt in nearly 30 years.
I didn't even realise they were already here last summer.

I agree with @HolidayAtNight. Covid came and has led to people staying at home more, even now, especially to work. People got used to being comfortable. Suddenly in many sectors, it wasn’t clear why a suit, or heels, meant you were any good at your job. When people couldn’t see your full outfit, many people (who have no actual interest in style and beauty) no longer bothered. There are more important things in life.

At the same time many people put on weight they haven’t lost. Again the emphasis was on comfort and fitted waistbands etc were not that. This also combines with a body positive movement which is a million (good) miles away from the culture when I came of age in the 90s. People again are more concerned with comfort, or self expression, than looking ‘neat’ and nice’.

Ive actually found the opposite in fashion these last few years. The same looks seem to go on forever and things are the same in the shops from one season to the next. At the moment if you buy some wide leg jeans or a tracksuit, some Sambas and a trench coat, you’d have been fashionable last year and still be fashionable next year. Fashion designers have tapped into the fact people want comfortable clothing and clothes manufacturers want to make things cheaply and that’s why imo everything has got so oversized. No need for it to fit anyone properly.

As a pp said, very baggy clothes look OK on the young but perhaps less so on the middle aged. And that really is the point of fashion, young ones don’t want to look the same as their mothers and grandmothers. Unfortunately for them fashion has become more diffused so that now somewhere like White Stuff has the baggy jeans too. Fashion is no longer the preserve of the young, but they can at least push things to extremes with the bagginess.

I think the general way not to look out of fashion at the moment is nothing super skin tight, to mix something casual with something elevated, and ideally look like you are perpetually on the way to the gym.

Yea there doesn't seem to be anything that everyone wears. Fashion doesn't seem to have changed much in the last couple decades - my 18 year old could have worn what she wears back then too (in fact she could have worn what she wears in the 1970s, as she trawls the charity shops for that style - think Love Story not boho).
My own 'uniform' hadn't changed - black base layer (occasionally white in high summer), then loose floaty kimono style jacket (summer) or long cardi (winter) on top.
But floral print midi/maxi dresses seem popular...

I saw an interesting tiktok this week.

It basically said that fashion is being ruined and diverted by influencers and affiliate links.

Influencers make money per purchase, so they are advertising the most basic boring stretchy stuff in neutral tones to appeal to the widest audience.

As opposed to things that are well made, fitted, colourful and may not appeal to all, depending on taste and size.
Hence we are ending up with stuff that is classic but boring.

It really made sense.

I hate the fashion for beige and skin tones, it looks horrible, and not classy at all. I'm still stuck in the past and still love my florals, dresses etc. I'm pleased to hear shirt dresses are in, I love a shirt dress and find them very flattering.

IDontHateRainbows · 13/04/2024 19:53

Earthy tones seem to be in at the moment.. beige, khaki, rust, ecru.

Always shied away from those colours preferring pastels or brights but I tried a khaki rib dress recently and quite liked it.

Strange. What I see in the shops is bright green and bright pink for spring. A bit of Breton/sailor style black/navy and white strips too.

I like khaki too. I think it reminds me of my 'youth' the 90s indie days when army stuff was fashionable. I had a little military army skirt with pockets 😂 and some army style trousers.

As a 'soft autumn' I'm thrilled my wardrobe is back on trend!

I've definitely seen long and short term trends coming and going. Wide leg pants replaced skinnies. Ballet flats came back in. There were a few weeks last year where literally every fashion influencer on the planet was wearing the same blue and white striped Lilysilk shirt.
