Comfortable but nice sandals

I’m looking for a pair of sandals that I can walk around in that are comfortable but not too big/chunky.

I do like a footbed style but open to other ideas. I’d be wearing them on a summer city break and for general use over summer.

Ideally tan or black colour. Budget, ideally under £90.

Suggestions welcomed.

Don’t laugh but Hotter Sandals are the comfiest. I got these last summer for a break in NYC as it was hot and I couldn’t face wearing trainers all day and they were perfect. Walked over 18,000 steps a day in them with no issues. Right level of cushioning, arch support and sturdy soles. The Tourist style is good too. I find Birkenstocks too hard and uncomfortable for serious city walking. https://www.charlesclinkard.co.uk/women-c1/sandals-c4/tanaku-ii-womens-wide-fit-sandals-p49674

I haven't tried them but like quite a few pairs of Riekers.

mitogoshi · 12/04/2024 10:36

I have timberland ones, I highly recommend

I find birkenstocks uncomfortable and always sought similar style sandals but have now found that slip on, flip flop styles really make my feet ache keeping them on. Its like I suddenly have to think about how to keep them on my feet after years of wearing that style every summer, infuriating because I love that style so much and have a lovely collection of them. So I set out to find the same sort of base but with straps that are fully adjustable for my wider foot. Bought these in pale blue two summers ago and they have been brilliant, about to invest in a second pair in another colour. First pair are still going strong but it will be nice to have a choice of colour. https://josefseibel.co.uk/collections/holiday-sandals/products/josef-seibel-tonga-25?variant=42444084216051

JOSEF SEIBEL Tonga 25

JOSEF SEIBEL Tonga 25, with its wrap-around cork sole, will provide the ultimate all-day comfort. Its adjustable straps and practical wedge heel make this a very versatile slip-on style that is the perfect choice to finish any look.

Birkenstocks are really uncomfortable on me, the moulding is in the wrong place in the middle of the sole and it gives me blisters. I wear FitFlop sandals, most comfortable I have ever found.

It's the raised bit at the edge of the sole where your toes are that make my Birkenstocks uncomfortable for walking any distance.

As I walk, my toes bump against the raised bit (it's sort of like a shallow rim) and it really makes my toes hurt after a while. They're fine for a trip to the supermarket or a day in the office, but I couldn't spend a day sightseeing in them.

I do have weird feet with long toes though, so this may not be a common problem.

True, but now I've discovered how comfortable, and how much cheaper, Moshulu are, I don't think I'll be buying any more Birkies!

For a summer city break and lots of walking, I think a leather footbed is essential whatever style you go for. Otherwise your feet can get very sweaty and smelly! You have to check labels very carefully though and often the symbols inside the sandal can be both leather and man made and you can't be sure which is which when you're in a shop. The online description can be clearer. Mephisto are good and some manage to be vaguely stylish - but not cheap. Also Clarks, Gabor and fitflop.

I bought Birkenstocks wanting comfort and quality and got neither! The first summer I hardly wore them as they were too uncomfortable. The second summer I had got more used to them but the soles split. Complete waste of money.

Fitflop, Ecco or Birkenstock. All fantastic brands with great support and you could walk all day in them. I

I've had several pairs of Teva Tirra sandals having seen several recommendations for them on here previously - I can highly recommend them as being really comfy walk the world sandals yet not too chunky, with the benefit of being waterproof so it doesn't matter if they / you get caught in the rain/a puddle/at the beach etc - also makes it easy to rinse them off if they get dirty. Both suede and fabric options.

Agree with @MooMinCow Hotter Tourist or Tanaku have seen me round Rome, Amsterdam and New York, plus holidays in the UK. I just wish they did Tourist in a more interesting range of colours as my first pair were a gorgeous turquoise and they seem to have stuck with safer colours ever since. Exceedingly comfortable though.

ShotgunSally · 12/04/2024 19:05

I have fitflop, teva, m and s foot glove and hotter, they are all OK but my merrells are amazing

Anewuser · 12/04/2024 19:22

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but are there any sandals that tick all my boxes?

I suffered with plantar fasciitis so normally wear Fitflop sandals but as pp says they can make my feet smell by the end of the day. So guess I need leather lining? I also want them to be easy to clean and don’t rot after the first rain shower. Preferably black and not too ugly.

Any suggestions please?

Love Merrells but they seem to need you to have Merrell shaped feet! I do, but I know people who can't get on with them at all. Likewise I don't get on with Joseph Seibel.

LadyLapsang · 12/04/2024 19:42

I love Penelope Chilvers sandals.

StamppotAndGravy · 12/04/2024 19:45

Timberland every time

Lifeomars · 12/04/2024 20:12

I like Reiker and Hotter, I have tender feet that are quite wide and have really suffered in other makes of sandals which cut and blistered my feet. I have never had to break in either Reiker or Hotter footwear, be they boots, shoes or sandals. I used to like Birkenstocks and got them in TKMax but they haven't had any in for the past two summers. Can't afford to pay full price for them and it was great to get them at a reduced price but not seen any in there for ages

Maglian · 12/04/2024 20:29

Trespass Kimbra. It's a walking sandal but with very minimal, suede straps. From above, with a foot in it, it is more neutral than sporty.

thedendrochronologist · 12/04/2024 20:29

I have TEVAS, saltwaters and fake birkies and love all of them. I have PF in one foot and arthritis in other big toe.

The fake birkies are great to slip on and go with anything and can wear all day on a usual day. The sole slaps a bit and is annoying in a quiet environments

The saltwaters are better as have and ankle strap and are smarter for work. Fine for al day but very flat and gave me PF after a long walk.

The TEVAS are my sightseeing holiday sandals and are the BOMB. I got a pair on a whim half price in office 3 years ago and they are amazing! Just the classic.

This year I will buy two of these:

Birkie Classic wide Madrid black standard buckle
Saltwater black swimmer
Teva classic black

Maybe Hotter tourist

thedendrochronologist · 12/04/2024 20:30

I mean birki style dupes from TK MAXX, not genuine fakes.
