First date (in a long time!) outfit help

Definitelynotme2022 · 08/04/2024 12:00

I have a first date for dinner and drinks at the weekend. It's my first date in 19 years..... so more than a little daunting.

I'm 53, size 16. Any ideas? I prefer things that aren't too shapeless as I have an hourglass figure, so they tend to look like tents on me. My normal go to would be a plain jersey dress, probably in black or navy with a nice jacket.

I’m sorry I don’t like any of the clothes in those links for a first date. The first poster dress is far too formal, the second looks like your planning to butcher your date for dinner!

If you already know him, the pressure is off a bit, I’d wear what you suggested if you feel comfortable in it, being relaxed is the most important bit.

Agree, too formal and the sleeves are long and loose on a tall model, so I think it would be awkward to eat in it.

Definitelynotme2022 · 11/04/2024 15:41

Wow, so many replies! Thank you all, I really am so grateful for all your input and support.

Can I just say, I absolutely love the pink leather. But it's so left field of my normal look, and completely out of my budget. But one can dream...

I've ordered the green Joanie dress that has been linked a couple of times, and this one which I don't think will arrive in time but I love pink and orange together and was going to order it anyway:

I have a really lovely black wrap dress and a black fitted midi dress very similar to one linked in the thread (I think it was Whistles).

If it's not too hot, I have this one already which is great but the denim is quite thick:

So, my date. He is a he! A friend of a friend that I've met a couple of times, and we've been messaging for a few weeks as he's been away. He's in the next town so I'll be taking the train there and back, so trying to avoid crazy heels.

Dora - Wrap Top Midi Dress - Pink & Orange Linear Print

The pink and orange print might be bright, but for those who love a bold dress and some colour in their lives, the Dora is the perfect sustainable midi dress, available at an amazing price. Dora is a fully lined midi-length dress with a fixed wrap top....

I think your choices are perfect!

Ohnodontwantthiscrush · 11/04/2024 15:50

Looks good OP, fingers crossed for a great date...

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 11/04/2024 16:03

Great that you’ve found some things you’re happy with, @Definitelynotme2022.

I hope the pink dress arrives on time. And note that it has a removable fabric belt - do you have a smarter leather belt or silk scarf you could replace it with, for a more ‘intentional’ look?

Have fun, whatever you wear!

Definitelynotme2022 · 11/04/2024 16:15

@Illpickthatup and @Ohnodontwantthiscrush Thank you both.

@BlossomBlossomBlossom I have my fingers firmly crossed.... Yes, I'm a pro at replacing the horrible fabric belts lol.

Thank you!

@Definitelynotme2022
I think your choices are a lot nicer than some of the other ones on this thread ! And I like the link to the Unfolded website - not seen that before but it's nice to see how the clothes look on different shapes and sizes. They just need a 5'3" model now! (My height).

Hope you have a good time 🤞

Plain black, boat neck, knee length shift dress, not tight, decent fabric - skim rather than cling. Plain black ballerinas. Excellent, simple jewellery.

I don't patterns or floppy, fussy things though.

Aswellisnotoneword · 12/04/2024 00:25

I came back to wish you luck OP, hope the date goes well!

Don't stress. My last first date was 5+ years ago, I can remember exactly every piece I wore down to the underwear. My now-fiance doesn't remember a thing, he was too nervous to notice Grin

(For the record - jeans, deep v neck black top, pointy flats, wool trench.)

Ah bless you, I'm a G cup 🙈😂 so I know the struggles, I have a small back to 32/34 I struggle buying bars 😂😂

I have in the last few days discovered Urkiye, they do clothes for the large of nork.

Tasha0429 · 12/04/2024 15:19

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia Hi Large of Nork? I'm confused lol

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia Hi Large of Nork? I'm confused lol

"Norks" is a British slang term for breasts. "Large of nork" means full-busted.

Tasha0429 · 12/04/2024 22:17

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia ah 😂 sorry! Never heard of that, I fought you showing me plus size clothes, I was going to say I'm not plus size, will look thank you x

Notalwaysthismean · 14/04/2024 20:57

Nice jeans, high heels and a slightly sexy top, preferably in a fine knit, that ‘accidentally’ slips off the shoulder.
Showing a bit of shoulder or back is very sexy but classy.

Tasha0429 · 14/04/2024 21:09

😆🤣🤣 ^ definitely a man talking 🤣 if not I'm sorry 🙈

Definitelynotme2022 · 15/04/2024 16:02

I'm back with a date update, if you're interested.........

Well that was big fat no! Nice guy, but boring and absolutely no chemistry.

I'd say you have to kiss a lot of frogs, but I didn't kiss this particular one 😉

Mountainormolehills · 15/04/2024 16:07

But @Definitelynotme2022 what did you actually wear? And not to worry, you will have better dates I’m sure

Oldie2 · 15/04/2024 16:15

Well, lets hope the poor Guy isn't active on the mumsnet style page!

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 15/04/2024 16:22

Ah well - at least you got to try out your outfit!

Is there anything you’d change for next time?

Definitelynotme2022 · 15/04/2024 16:29

@Oldie2 I very much doubt it! I'm sure he'll be perfectly lovely for the right person, just not me.

I wore a bottle green silky wrap around dress, black tights and ankle boots, and my trusty but beautiful leather jacket.

I hate in between seasons.

but if you got anything, you got the experience, you can be more confident in your next 🙌 take it as it was! Not everyone is everyone's cup of tea, we move, NEXT 😂

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 15/04/2024 17:24

Yes, congratulations! You’re an experienced dater now. Grin
