First date (in a long time!) outfit help

Definitelynotme2022 · 08/04/2024 12:00

I have a first date for dinner and drinks at the weekend. It's my first date in 19 years..... so more than a little daunting.

I'm 53, size 16. Any ideas? I prefer things that aren't too shapeless as I have an hourglass figure, so they tend to look like tents on me. My normal go to would be a plain jersey dress, probably in black or navy with a nice jacket.

OP most of the above suggestions are verging on lunacy.

The first silk maxi dress is very formal and you run the risk of looking quite mad if you turn up in something like that, even if you dress it down with Birkenstocks and an Afghan hound on a lead.

As a short size 16 myself I'd go with something like this plus it's great value:

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/04/2024 22:16

OP... I'm late 50s with an hour glass figure, size 14-16. So not a million miles away from you. I always wear a v-neck, otherwise my bust looks ridiculous.

For a first date which included dinner and drinks, I'd wear something that looks and feels great when you're sitting down.

None of us know what types of things you like to wear but I've bought some pretty flattering tops and dresses online from Sosander that suit an hourglass figure.

DarlingCoffee · 10/04/2024 07:56

Something like this?
agree with PP, being comfortable is most important.

That's the first dress I've liked.
Blossom x3 is usually reliable but I'm not keen on any of her suggestions here

If it were me, I'd probably wear one of my Klements dresses or if I were splurging on a new dress this.

Alémais

(My fantasy outfit would be this)

Fantasy date dress

SOFIE SHIRTDRESS

Midi shirtdress silhouette Balloon sleeves with button cuff Gathered skirt Rouleau belt with toggle ends Fit is relaxed Refer to size guide for garment measurements Refer to flat lay product shots for true product and colour representation Model height...

Do people go to softplay in dresses? Really? Surely leggings and joggers are more appropriate, especially if you kid wants you to join in.

I think you're definitely in the minority if you'd wear a full length gown to a first date.

Well I must have worn a dress as I've never owned leggings or joggers and I did take child to soft play (occasionally) I agree those dresses are too everyday.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 10/04/2024 22:35

Before you do anything, update yourself by googling fashion for over 50's

That's the worst advice ever; on any thread for any event.

Even better if they do one in pleather.....

Ohnodontwantthiscrush · 10/04/2024 22:39

I think it would be a really useful exercise for anyone making suggestions here to first answer this question:

Have you ever been on a date?

Ohnodontwantthiscrush · 10/04/2024 22:41

VanGoghsDog · 10/04/2024 22:38

Now that could 'cause havoc' for sure.

Apologies for multiple posting - but would people really wear a dark jersey dress and jacket on a date? It sounds exactly like dull office wear to me.

Not that I'm likely to go on a date ... but if I did then yes I'd wear a jersey dress as that's the kind of thing I wear and feels comfortable . Would were a leather jacket rather than blazer though.

Dargawn · 10/04/2024 23:09

Agree with That's the worst advice ever; on any thread for any event. Do not Google fashion ideas for over 50s!

I think some of the suggestions/posters are a bit pretentious.

We decided to take this down so the poster can start a new thread.

@rft I e just seen your post from yesterday buried within this thread about dressing for a date . You need to start your own thread in 'relationships'.

Tasha0429 · 09/04/2024 23:52

Hi

Firstly I've just read this entire thread absolutely hilarious 🙈😅

Anyway, your never going to get what you want from other people's opinions and nobody will have the same taste and body, but I'd go LITTLE BLACK DRESS! Everyone owns one if not you should 😂 dress it up or down accordingly, and glam your face and hair! Boom hahahaha

I don't own a little black dress. It's near-impossible to get dresses for H cup tits.

Tasha0429 · 10/04/2024 23:49

Ah bless you, I'm a G cup 🙈😂 so I know the struggles, I have a small back to 32/34 I struggle buying bars 😂😂

Aswellisnotoneword · 11/04/2024 07:11

What do you consider your best physical features, what you'd like to show off?

I'm the same age and size as you OP. Not thrilled about my figure ATM so I'd be dressing in a 'blank canvas' that puts the attention on my face. Modest, flowy but tailored clothes in head to toe black and put all my time and effort into hair and makeup.

I'd probably go wide leg pants, a chiffon or silk shirt and pointy flats as that feels cool and modern, but you could easily achieve the same with a black dress and jacket plus any shoes you love.

umberelladay · 11/04/2024 07:30

God it's annoying when the OP buggers off.
Agree with others wear something you feel good and comfortable in. Post a picture of your best option, state why you like it. Give details of where you are going (not actual place, but similar)
Then people can comment on whether your current outfit is ok, or similar suggestions.

I’m really curious to know, @Illpickthatup, exactly what you would do if you passed a woman in a restaurant wearing the pink dress.

Would you race out and find some excrement to throw on her?

Or encourage the other diners to attack and laugh at her?

Or would you just walk on, maybe thinking I don’t like that dress much? Leaving her to enjoy her dinner.

Why are you so frightened by the mere existence of an item of clothing you will probably never encounter outside this thread?

Edited

Good grief, you are taking this very seriously. You were very rude in a previous post, it seems like you don't mind dishing it out.

OP, whatever happens, I hope you find something that you love and have an amazing date. I don't blame you for not coming back to the thread.

usernother · 11/04/2024 09:22

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 09/04/2024 11:47

I’ve been wondering what I might wear on a first date …

If I wasn’t entirely sure I liked them, and was leaning more towards intimidation than intimacy - with a fantasy budget - probably this:

https://teurnstudios.com/products/maxi-leather-dress-powder-pink?_pos=13&_sid=de4162262&_ss=r

Or, if I did like them and felt entirely relaxed, this:

https://teurnstudios.com/products/double-leather-maxi-skirt-1?_pos=11&_sid=de4162262&_ss=r

Or the Phoebe Philo skirt below - with a white cotton or ivory cashmere vest and all my favourite jewellery.

That pink monstrosity looks like a giant sausage casing. It's one of the most hideous dresses I've ever seen in my life. It wouldn't be flattering on anyone. Suggesting that for a first date would probably lead to the date doing a runner out of the toilet window to get away from being seen with anyone wearing it.

I'm not surprised she's went away with the amount of replies and arguments 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP I hope the date goes well whatever you wear!

Lentilweaver · 11/04/2024 09:38

We should have a sticky on the top of the forum, asking all posters to specify budget to save time. I understand many expensive clothes can be bought on Vinted but I don't think those leather ones over £1 k will be knocking about there at reduced cost.

Though it would make S and B much less entertaining. I am only here for the laughs; would never ask for advice!😁

Workawayxx · 11/04/2024 11:51

im loving that this thread shows the huge range of things people would wear for a first date!

It depends whether it’s a meal at Wetherspoons or the ivy but I love the idea of a PP - slip skirt and top with boots of some sort. I’d choose a thin but slightly slouchy v neck Knitted top of sone sort. Or maybe a cardigan like this (comes in loads of colours so you could pick one that suits you or matches with skirt). It looks effortless but the satin of the skirt, softness of the top and glimpse of cleavage is sexy. I’d also push the sleeves up.

The way Sezanne styles its clothes puts me off buying anything from them. I really dislike that pouty, I'm so sexy and French , I've just rolled out of bed and can't find my bra or a hairbrush" look.

Brieandbeetroot · 11/04/2024 13:50

@Definitelynotme2022 I'd probably wear something like this. You can dress it down with a jacket and flats/trainers if that's your style, or dress it up. It would make a good dress from spring through to autumn and it's 100 per cent cotton so no worries about getting sweaty if that's an issue when you're nervous etc. You didn't include your height but it comes in regular and petite lengths.

Ha, so true! It would look rather different IRL without the sultry look.
