Wedding guest outfit for short, fat woman!

I’ve a family wedding coming up next month and need something nice to wear. I’m sooooo out of practice with dressing for these kind of occasions and would welcome suggestions for outfits / where to buy (UK).

i am size 18-20 with huge bazookas, and only 5’ 3”.

I tried a couple of Scarlet and Jo dresses on but the maxi dresses are too long and I felt the shorter one just magnified my top half in a most unflattering way. And I’ve not worn a dress for decades, so that didn’t help with the comfort / confidence levels.

i did buy a nice pair of black wide legged trousers in a sale earlier this week, thinking I could maybe find a nice top somewhere? But haven’t seen anything yet ….

When I was bigger, I found that empire line dresses suited me, especially if the top part was stretchy, as they gave me a nice shape around my bust, but then skimmed over my stomach.
Also tops and dresses with cold shoulder or sheer at the top, but still wear a bra but skin coloured. Shows off a bit of skin so doesn't look like you're wearing a tent.
Or if you choose a dress but still feel unconfident about how it makes your shape look, wear a sheer cardigan type thing on top. I forget what they're called, crochet cardigan, bolero or cover, type thing.

How about this? Looks quite forgiving but would need taking up, I’m guessing.

Take a look on the JL website. There’s currently over 8000 dresses on there and the filter system is fantastic. Size, occasion, colour length etc…
All prices and brands.

Edited

I've bought loads of unworn or hardly worn dresses from ebay private sellers, and often find more than store websites. I find it fun to just put in the size and certain features I like in the search, and see what comes up. I guess Vinted would be similar.

I don’t know if you like kaftan type styles but you’ll feel like skinny queen nice too

Plantymcplantface · 27/04/2024 08:28

I’m same dress size as you OP and went for a jumpsuit with a v neck and floaty material with nice sandals, I added funky necklace and a formal blazer over the top for the ceremony. I felt smart but not too tailored and I’m not a floaty dress person. Mine was a sage green jumpsuit with a tie front on Vinted, so might be worth trying there?

Have a look at these :

curve wow v neck patterned Curve wide leg navy v neck brighter color example lovely for larger VCAY Plus Size V-Neck Wide Leg Jumpsuit I discovered amazing products on SHEIN.com, come check them out! api-shein.shein.com/h5/sharejump/appjump?link=VfVrCJto8lb&localcountry=GB boobs soft and stretchy v neck in green lots more ideas curve green polka.dot.jumpsuit tie front here

You could go black for the jumpsuit, if if you feel
comfortable, similar to your idea about the black trousers?

With a v-neck to make the most of your cleavage and add a smart coloured or patterned blazer over the top, with gold or silver or neutral shoes. I’m sure you will find something lots of different ideas on this thread x

Alittlefrustrated · 27/04/2024 09:20

Keep it easy/cost effective for yourself. Use the black trousers, with a v neck black vest or very plain top, and add one of the gorgeous wafty coloured/patterned long or blazer length jackets previously suggested. You'll feel comfortable and look great.

TimesChangeAgain · 07/04/2024 09:27

How about a simple black top with the trousers and something gorgeous and wafty on top, like this https://onehundredstars.co.uk/collections/throwovers/products/throwover-stork-pea-green

I like that!

Had the same problem last year. I decided to wear a short kimono from One Hundred Stars (viscose so nice to wear in warm weather). Matched that with a plain vest and a straight, petite skirt from Boden. I felt great and going for separates rather than a dress really helped 🙂They have lots of different designs.

Ooh, that’s lovely, too.

Imgoingtobefree · 27/04/2024 12:47

I’ve got a family wedding in less than two weeks. I’m shorter than you and have been on a manic diets so not as bosomy as I was, but still chunky.

Im considering navy trousers, neutral top and looking for an 3/4 length dress coat, floaty jacket or similar.

Seaside3 · 27/04/2024 20:32

I'm similar in size and shape to you, op, and I wouldn't wear most if the clothes shared, sorry! A lot of them really will wear you, and if you'll pardon me for being blunt, make you look like the plump jolly one.
I think, once I accepted I'm still going to look plump (fat if truth be told), I stopped wearing things to hide behind, or, 'fat girls clothes'.
I now wear what I think looks stylish. So, black loose trousers with a v neck shirt for work. For a wedding, if you're trying to keep it cost effective, I'd wear the trousers. With a v neck shirt - for me I would hide my arms, but roll the sleeves to show wrists and break up block of colour. And I really like the bright, Box jackets around at the moment, so I'd pop one on. This should make you appear taller. Comfortable but good shoes . A good bag - probably a clutch for me as I don't want to add more bulk. If you're an accessory type, add a necklace or a great ring.
Basically, quite different from a lot of the floaty ideas people have shared!

LesleyinBath · 28/04/2024 12:58

Hi , what about black flattering trousers and top with a kimono style jacket over it. It can be dressed up with coloured flower bag , shoes etc.
Pic is from M&S.
It's very difficult to find the perfect outfit but you want to feel comfortable too.
Good luck x

Bollindger · 28/04/2024 15:21

Look for a fit and flare dress, I am short than you and a size up and they look amazing.

honeyrider · 29/04/2024 15:35

I was at a wedding over the weekend and wore this dress and jacket, bought separately. It was my first time wearing a dress in over 26 years. I'm 5'3" and size 22ish. The model is slouched so doesn't do the dress justice.
