Wedding guest outfit for short, fat woman!

I’ve a family wedding coming up next month and need something nice to wear. I’m sooooo out of practice with dressing for these kind of occasions and would welcome suggestions for outfits / where to buy (UK).

i am size 18-20 with huge bazookas, and only 5’ 3”.

I tried a couple of Scarlet and Jo dresses on but the maxi dresses are too long and I felt the shorter one just magnified my top half in a most unflattering way. And I’ve not worn a dress for decades, so that didn’t help with the comfort / confidence levels.

i did buy a nice pair of black wide legged trousers in a sale earlier this week, thinking I could maybe find a nice top somewhere? But haven’t seen anything yet ….

I was going to suggest one hundred stars too! They’re really beautiful!

Like this perhaps

That blouse looks too big it doesn't have to be so loose. I do like her style though. Is she the lady from bake off?

Yes, the shirt is maybe not the best for a wedding. Yes, she was on the bake off and now is a fashion blogger on insta. She has written a great book on body image.

Hi there 😊 I was a personal stylist for Jigsaw and John Lewis for 20 years. I have a similar figure to you and there are a few tricks to use if you want to streamline and take the focus off larger bits 😅
No black trousers! Or anything black or dark on your slimmer part - use colour or pattern on thar area, in this case the lower half and use a coordinating necklace/ scarf and bag.

On the larger part use darker unpatterned pieces or a deep v in colour with a dark vest underneath.

If you don't want to look like a tank, don't wear short sleeves as it just makes one big block with your boobs!

String straps or just sleeveless with a loose drapy long sleeve unstructured jacket / cardi / open top works brilliantly, especially if the top is semi sheer.

Avoid structured jackets though especially short jackets with defined shoulders as they will look very boxy.

Obviously we all hate rules, these are just tricks for streamlining 😊 in my opinion my favourite outfits are the ones where people express themselves 😊

I'm actually thinking of doing styling freelance and would love some yay or nay feedback from you lovely ladies 😊

I've recommended them before - prettykitty. I had a dress from them for a December wedding. I'm similar size to you just an inch or two shorter.

@TheOriginalFrench

Unfortunately that sort of material and design really doesn't suit those of us who are e cup or above

I bought a cotton dress (not jersey) from sea salt last week for a wedding which looks smart with a jacket but easily dressed down with a cardigan for general use

mitogoshi · 07/04/2024 14:45

Last wedding I went to I had a dress from prettykitty, beautiful but thin, I wore a body suit with shape wear underneath

Those Scarlet and Jo outfits look like they will wear you, rather than you wear them. The colour and pattern combinations are a bit much, htey make the models all look like galleons in full sail. I'd go for an all over plain in a really great colour that fits the season and occasion, or if you want a pattern then keep it a bit more subtle. You can get away with black at a wedding if it's not too austere or plain. bWrap dresses are always a good call because they work well with big boobs and are adjustable depending on your waist size. And I love a jumpsuit.

Or a jumpsuit, tho I’ve never dared wear one before!

I bought a wide legged, stretchy jumpsuit with a crossover deep V front, from M&S a few years ago, and as someone who is a size 16, quite short with big boobs and arse, it is one of the most flattering AND comfortable things I've ever owned. I've worn it to death at every dressy occasion for about 5 years solid and I always get complimented on it. I'd have ten in different colours and patterns if I could.

Look at plus size at next such pretty dresses you will look fab

AnotherJaffaCakePlease · 07/04/2024 16:36

Have a look at Roman- I ordered a couple of dresses from there for summer weddings and have been pleasantly surprised by them. Reasonably priced too.

C0NNIE · 07/04/2024 17:56

Id go for a linen trouser suit in ecru, pink, pale blue or some other non office type colour.

You might have to size up on the blazer / jacket for the norks , so allow some time and budget to get the sleeves taken up and / or the shoulders taken in. Or buy from a brand that has petite fit blazers.

Remember the jacket doesn’t have to button up - just look as if it possibly could ( so not a huge gap ).

You can wear any kind of top you like with it, as looks as it’s not officey and will look good when you take off the jacket.

You also get suits like this with all different styles of trousers - straight , wide legged , ankle length.

You will be able to wear all the pieces with other items for casual wear for the rest of the summer.

Linen creases so bad not a good look

Op have you had a look at any of these websites hope you find what your looking for

Keepingongoing · 07/04/2024 20:00

@Starling7if you wear pattern and colour below the waist, and dark and plain on top, you’re visually cutting your body in half, aren’t you? And IMO that may also ( depending on the colours chosen) emphasise the bust area.

Starling7 · 07/04/2024 20:23

@Keepingongoing not if you use a deep v in a darker complimentary as I suggested or use a silk scarf or fluttery jacket in the same colors as the skirt. 😅

Keroppi · 07/04/2024 20:45

Simply Be!!! Joanna Hope has some great dresses. Definitely plus size and petite friendly, my last few wedding guest dresses have been from simplybe. I find a v neck or low neck very flattering when you're Large of Nork

I am a similar height and was your dress size last year and have lots of dresses like the one in the photos in different colours. They are midi length on me and I wore a couple of them to weddings last year and felt comfortable and looked ok too.

@Chewbecca yes, the tank description related to me 😅 that's what I think when I wear short sleeves due to the big boobs 😅 but yes, I note your disapproval.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 08/04/2024 14:46

@TunaCrunchy do you have a link for these dresses please?
