Ptosis surgery

I posted this in health as well but wondered if anyone had had this procedure and could tell me about it.
I saw a plastic surgeon and they said I needed a blepharoplasty procedure. But I got a second opinion from consultant ophthalmologist and I need a Ptosis procedure.
I just wondered if anyone had had this done.

I had it done years ago. I just have a slight scar in the eye crease. Best thing I ever did. Didn’t take long to heal. Hope that helps.

@2024mustbebetter. Thanks for replying. Did it work well? How was the recovery?

I had this. They gave me a very light sedative (diazepam 5mg) and local anaesthetic. It was painless and easy as a procedure.

I was very bruised and swollen the next day, and probably for 4 or 5 days. Also, my eyes looked asymmetrical initially which freaked me out hugely but that all settled down when the swelling subsided.

I found that the next day I was very intolerant of light and even the tv hurt my eyes, but that was only the first day.

I took 2 weeks off work but really could have gone back after 10 days once the stitches were out. My scars are in the crease of the lids so not visible when my eyes are open.

I’ll try pm you pics if that’s ok?

Was bruised and a bit sore but much better after a few days.

Can I ask why/by whom you were recommended to get this? I have very hooded eyes that I am finding I need to hoike up with my eyebrows (if that makes any sense), in order to open my eyes fully. Assumed that I’d need a cosmetic procedure to sort out, but wondering now if it can be done on the NHS as a medically necessary thing. Cosmetic benefits would be a bonus but it’s just tiring now to keep them held up!!

Hiker50 · 04/04/2024 19:41

@Cuppatea14 If the issue is excess skin because of aging which is impeding your vision you might need a blepharoplasty procedure which is removal of skin. You can have an upper or lower blepharoplasty.
What I have is very hooded eyes - they cover half my pupil - and I struggle to open my eyes fully. I need a Ptosis surgery this involves changing the position of the muscle in the eye lid.
I was referred via my Optitian. I saw a consultant ophthalmologist.
Maybe make an eye test appointment and ask their opinion. I’m glad I went the NHS route because a plastic surgeon was happy to do the wrong procedure and it wouldn’t have helped.

I had it done a couple of years ago. Immediately saw the results. Was uncomfortable on the first night & perhaps the next day but no big deal. Good luck!

Hiker50 · 21/04/2024 22:48

@BlackSwan Thanks so much.

Hey I had it done when I was 11 on both eye lids! I'm now 29! No one can tell, tiny scar best thing that I ever did!

@Jellybeanlondon So was he an ophthalmologist? Mine is being done on the NHS.
Will he pay for the reconstruction?

Jellybean, gosh that's awful. I've sent you a PM if that's ok...

wintersun21 · 06/05/2024 17:21

Just to say, not sure if yours is the same but I had my ptosis surgery on NHS

They did both eyes, took some muscle from just above my knee and used it to raise my lids. I couldn't see for a day or two and stayed in hospital as I had bandages over my eyes. Recovery was ok after that but no sport or anything for a while. Obviously for me I was a kid and it was nearly 20 years ago but the results were amazing. My life is normal and I wear glasses but that's down to astigmatism. I don't need to be extra careful or anything and I forget I ever had it done.

If you can get yourself referred to moorfields I would -they were fantastic with me!

Hiker50 · 06/05/2024 17:22

@Jellybeanlondon It’s quite shocking. It sounds like he did more than Ptosis surgery. It sounds like Blepharoplasty!

I only yesterday Googled this as my hooded eyes are getting quite severe with age, and I noticed I can lift one side with my eyebrows but not the other. It looks almost paralysed and bizarre when captured in photos.

The side I can’t lift is the eye that was very lazy as a child and I had to wear a patch on the good eye to get this one working. I presume this is ptosis, which I hadn’t heard of until yesterday.

I’m only 42 but guess may need something done in the future if it continues to droop.

Hiker50 · 07/05/2024 13:59

@WingateAndSlim Ask for a referral to see an Ophthalmologist. An Optitian can do it.
