Normally a no foundation person but I want to try some. Where is the best place to get a good match?

I am 56 and have started experimenting with bits of foundation and concealer. The ones I have at home are ok but not perfect. Either too pale or just not quite right. I believe I have a warm undertone but have no idea if I need a beige, peach, pink, yellow base etc.
I want to go somewhere where the SA are actually knowledgable and can tell me what tone/shade/undertone works for me.
When I look online and they ask you to look at photos and see which one matches you I honestly have no idea.
Thanks🙂

Boots no7 are really good for colour matching and their foundation is as good as any other brand.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/03/2024 14:47

Foundation at 56 I usually find whatever colour you are you need to mix it into moisturiser or I used a moisture booster (blue bottle now discontinued) by Clarins.

A decent counter should match you whether you go to Dior, Chanel etc.

I once had a bad experience at a mac counter with mac up. They made me look like something out of Ru Paul’s drag race. Papers to bite the bullet again. Just slightly concerned that these doubters are staffed by very young women who actually know nothing at all.

Another vote for Boots No.7 They have a good range and match it to your skin really well (in my opinion).

WeightoftheWorld · 28/03/2024 17:50

I agree with Boots and if it does matter to you, I've been in a few times in the past and the counter staff have been around your age (I'm much younger), so locally at least it's definitely not all young women like the other brands are.

ShufflingAlong · 28/03/2024 17:53

Boots no 7 counter for assistance in trying the different types.

I decided I needed some foundation at age 50 and the assistant was great and gave me a couple of options to try before buying and listened when I said I wanted something light.

I am not a makeup person in that I don't wear it often and when I do I want something natural looking and they really did deliver.

EasterBunnny · 28/03/2024 17:55

We’re make up twins, I’m 55 and just got into wearing some concealer for the first time.
I went to a Benefit counter in Boots and tried some products. I am now very, very happy with a primer and concealer.

I like this
I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?
https://www.johnlewis.com/chanel-les-beiges-water-fresh-complexion-touch-with-micro-droplet-pigments-even-illuminate-hydrate/b10/p6260939?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&s_share=jlappios_bmV0LndoYXRzYXBwLldoYXRzQXBwLlNoYXJlRXh0ZW5zaW9u It’s not quite a foundation but I like the natural look and feel of this.

ASighMadeOfStone · 28/03/2024 20:24

Boots here too.
Thanks to their little gadget wotsit, I know I'm Calico and can match that on sites like Findation for other brands.

Calico is perfect on me though.

I once made the mistake of allowing an Estée Lauder SA at my face. I looked like I'd been tango'd.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 28/03/2024 20:36

I did the L'Oréal true match foundation thing on their website and it came back with a perfect colour match.

Previously I had gone to Bobbi Brown which was a perfect match.

DustyD2 · 28/03/2024 20:37

Try erborian cc cream. Much lighter than foundation but good coverage

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 28/03/2024 20:39

I just come here to recommend Erborian as well, it's amazing, very natural looking, but I look much healthier when wearing it.

pamshamalam · 28/03/2024 20:43

I know it's not what you asked but I don't like a heavy coverage but wanted to look a bit more alive and glowing so I tried quite a few matching things but ended up buying Morphe skin tint. You can build it up for a fuller coverage but I just use a light layer. It blends well and is weightless. It really makes a difference. I find any foundation settles into creases during the day. I have used it today from early before work and it still looks good now. I

Another vote for Boots No 7. Great expertise in their product and such a huge range of colours, plus very generous samples

Also their products have skin care built in so for the price point, very good value for money

thinkfast · 28/03/2024 21:23

If you want foundation at a makeup counter try Bobbi brown.

However, at 56 I think foundation won't be quite right unless your skin is very youthful. I'd go for a bb cream. The boots no 7 bb cream for dry skin is my favourite bb cream.

HoldingOnForAHeron · 28/03/2024 21:26

Boots No 7 counter, and a BB cream would probably be good.

Not19foreverpullyourselftogether · 28/03/2024 21:41

Trinny London, book in for an individual consultation. They are great for colour match for us more mature people!

BigButtons · 28/03/2024 22:50

Thanks for all the suggestions. My skin is good. I have looked after it. I have worn spf 50 every single day for the last 20 years- even in the depths of winter.I also use tret .
I am certainly not after heavy coverage- looking mainly to do on my t zone and eye corners really. Just even things out?
I will visit a no 7 counter!🙂

You can find some amazing foundation brand ranges in M&S. If you can go into one of their bigger stores and try a few in your skin you can definitely find something that will work! That worked brilliantly for me :).

Hi which No7 foundation did you get? I'm looking for a light cover too. I'm 62.

minipie · 29/03/2024 00:17

Space NK carry a good range of brands and will give honest advice IME (they recently pointed me to John Lewis as they didn’t have stock of the range they thought best for me - rather than pushing another of their brands). Also I prefer shade matching in natural light, this is much easier in a small store than a windowless department store.

minipie · 29/03/2024 00:19

PS if you generally wear nothing you may be happier with a BB or CC cream or a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation. Try Erborian (their BB is more pigmented than their CC) or NARS tinted moisturiser (lots of shades). Laura Mercer tinted moisturiser also excellent and lots of shades.

ShufflingAlong · 29/03/2024 05:42

@pussinboots61 I have the no7 stay perfect foundation (cool ivory was my shade in that range).

The assistant tried a few on my face but this felt the lightest covering.

MayMi · 29/03/2024 05:58

Fenty has the best colour range and they have their own makeup artists there to help

MCOut · 29/03/2024 06:02

Go to somewhere like John Lewis and try a few counters. Take a sharpie because some will give you samples you can take home. You’ll then be able to try the foundations in natural light before you buy one. You’ll then be able to try the foundations in natural light before you buy one.

I’ve never liked full coverage and over the years I’ve mainly worn YSL, Esteé Lauder and now Armani.
