Dd(15) and hair washing

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 26/03/2024 21:08

My DD has v long blonde hair but she just seems incapable of washing it properly. Even the day after she washes it, it looks greasy and feels like she hasn't rinsed it properly. I've mentioned rinsing longer in shower and I bought a clarifying shampoo to see if it helped and first time she used it it looked better but now back to same.

Any suggestions? Change shampoo to something easier to rinse?

My daughters hair went through a stage like this, it's possibly hormone related.

I got her some dry shampoo to use in the mornings. It really helped.

MaloneMeadow · 26/03/2024 22:10

What is she using on it? Could it be too much conditioner, too near her roots?

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 26/03/2024 22:19

I have very fine hair but lots of it and get that greasy look if I use anything too rich. I find the best option is kids 2 in 1 shampoo, Garnier Ultimate Blends is nice although I'm very unhappy they stopped doing the cherry and almond one, I loved smelling like Bakewell tart 😂

If that doesn't work then another option is swapping the order, conditioner just on the ends rinse then shampoo afterwards.

Since starting to use the kids 2 in 1 I've gone from having to wash my hair daily to being able to just wash it 2 or 3 times a week.

My hair doesn't necessarily look great the day after, and two days after it definitely needs a wash! I doubt I'm rinsing improperly, as my hair is short, so it's not so complicated. Depends a lot on the hair, presumably.

Sounds more like what hair does when you are a teen than anything else

My dd had an issue, she's resolved it by using an inkey list scalp scrub once a week and ensuring her hair is completely dry before tying it up after washing. She used a silk pillowcase changed every couple of days.

For shampoo, she has a scalp clarifying one with niacinamide and makes sure to only put conditioner on the ends.

After washing, she uses heat protectant but nothing else. And uses dry shampoo before going to bed the day she washes it.

currentstateofthings · 26/03/2024 22:44

Make sure she’s not putting conditioner on her roots only 3/4 of the way up

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 27/03/2024 06:33

Thanks everyone some great suggestions. I have told her about the conditioner.

I will try these ideas but yes it probs is teen hair too.

Might just be the way it is. My hair was the same around that age.. just seemed to be greasy when I woke up if I showered the night before.

does she do the finger running through to push her hair back a lot? I used to touch my hair all the time which didn’t help.. but I also washed my hair every day and that just encouraged my hair to be greasier quicker.

I went though a period of horrible greasy disgusting hair because I stopped washing it everyday. Now I can get away with washing it every 3-4 days instead.

Theunamedcat · 27/03/2024 06:43

I get around this by washing my teens hair for him he doesn't always do a proper job no matter how long he spends in the shower 😑

BedRot · 27/03/2024 06:44

Double shampoo including using a clarifying shampoo. No products at the roots (conditioner or styling products). Rinse longer than she thinks is needed and do from underneath as well as on top (ie head upside down in the shower). Dry shampoo on day two.

Is her hair feeling claggy or actually greasy? The former means she isn’t rinsing well, the latter is just being a teen! Some products just cause this if they are badly formulated or don’t suit the hair.

Mumof1andacat · 27/03/2024 06:49

Washing it twice, making sure all the shampoo is rinsed out, hair drying not leaving it to air dry and not going to bed with wet/damp hair

MyMotherMyDogAndClowns · 27/03/2024 06:53

I have a lot of long, thick, curly hair and I have to spend more time than you’d think before adding shampoo getting it thoroughly wet all the way through to my scalp, or it won’t wash properly at the roots. It could be worth trying this.

My hair is just like this! It has been since i was a teen, and dd's is exactly the same. We have to wash our hair every day.

You wash your 15yo son's hair?! How will he ever learn to do it independently?

My dds hair is similar op but has been better since using the faith in nature shampoo for greasy hair and much less conditioner. She does use dry shampoo as well sometimes.

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/03/2024 07:08

My hair needed washing every day as a teen. I still have oily skin and hair now at 42, but at 15 my hair would be washed in the morning and greasy by evening.

Mirabai · 27/03/2024 08:20

Is she using shampoo for greasy hair? Is she washing it twice every time? Does she wash it every day?

He does it independently badly its waist length fgs 😂 my neighbour goes for a wash at the hairdressers weekly her hair is long and thick too its not that unusual (and she is in her 40s)

Mirabai · 27/03/2024 10:13

He sounds like he needs the car wash.

Why have waist length hair if he physically can’t manage it himself? Getting your mum to wash your hair for you at the ripe old age of 15 is absolutely ridiculous

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Talk about learned helplessness 🙄

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 27/03/2024 13:50

My DD 13 has similar. She uses this now and it has helped.

Same here. I have to wash my hair everyday, it looks horribly greasy before I get in the shower in the morning.

I can assure you I'm washing my hair properly, it's just the way some people's hair / scalps are.

Brightshoe · 27/03/2024 17:10

I had long blonde hair as a teenager, and even well into adulthood always felt it needed washing in the morning. If I washed it at night it was itchy and starting to look greasy by morning. I don't think this is anything DD is doing wrong.
