Are Birkenstock Sandals any comfortable?

I've been thinking of buying these Birkenstock ankle strap sandals for a while now https://www.legendfootwear.co.uk/products/birkenstock-milano-bs-birko-flor-unisex-sandals-5825 but I'm not sure if we need to go a size up or down. I have no experience with Birkenstock before. Please if anyone here can help me. My foot size is really small, I'm not sure if they'll fit me

I don't think my toes were long enough for Birkenstocks. I bought a size 4 so that the ridge on the inside sole would be under the correct part of my toes. This meant when walking the tops of my toes were rubbing on the front where it curves up. The next size up would have looked odd with too much space between the tip of my toes and the front of the sandal. I was disappointed. I loved my red leather Scholls as a child plus a fake pair from Asda with wood soles so thought I wouldn't mind the hardness of Birkenstocks but was wrong.

That's a shame, it sounds like they were too small. There does need to be a bit of a gap at the front, and none of the toes should touch. Sometimes you do have to size up if you have (like me) a longer middle toe.

I just got my first pairs yesterday - light pink vegan Arizonas (regular footbed) and pale green Francas (soft footbed). I'm a 6.5 and tried them on in the Birkenstock shop and was advised to get a 40 narrow, which so far seems to have been a good recommendation. I bought them online from the retailer as I got a discount, especially the Francas which were already reduced, but was glad I had the chance to try them on in store first.

I love the Francas but they are getting quite difficult to find where I am, that line seems to be discontinued now.

The braided one especially. I keep my eye out but not yet found a pair in my size.

Not that I need another pair, but I'm still keeping an eye out 😊

I don't know what these are called. Anyone know? I love the look of them but they are so uncomfortable. Gutted because they weren't cheap.

These are the Bali style.

They are gorgeous!

Try again, stick with them. Wear socks around the house with them if you need to. Wear them for an hour each day and build it up a bit every few days. Honestly once you break them in you will feel so differently about them.

And this style with the strap is quite hard to find right now.

romdowa · 27/03/2024 04:35

I tried for two years to break in a pair and all I got was blisters every time I wore then. I gave them away in the end as I'd barely wear them for half an hour and I'd be in agony

The4teddybears · 27/03/2024 04:50

I discovered Mayari sandals about 7 years ago. I’m not exaggerating when I say they have literally transformed my life. I’ve got wide feet which swell in warmer weather and always had blistered feet in summer with various sandals cutting I’m to me.
I’ve worn my silver mayori every day in spring , summer and autumn ever since. Walked miles and miles in them. They’ve almost worn out now and I’ll replace with the same style this year. Just got to decide what colour.

Nannyfannybanny · 26/03/2024 22:40

Never mind being uncomfortable, they are so ugly. Great big thick straps.reminds me of elderly train spotting and God Botherers.

Haha I agree they’re not the prettiest pair of footwear I own 😂
I do hate sandals and feet in general and dh laughed at mine so hard saying they looked like an orthopaedic doctor prescribed offering! He’s right (imo!) but they did the job and will be for holidays only 😂

bluecomputerscreen · 27/03/2024 06:38

I find them very comfortable and wear them around the house (arizona).

it's all about the fit. your toes need to be in the right position or the toe support digs into the ball of the foot.

but it's all personal preference. personally I can't get on at all with very flat shoes (flip flops, converse)

I've worn Madrids to do 38,000 steps around cobbled and uneven city streets in really hot weather. I struggle with my feet but Birks are the best for them.

Yes I’ve heard others say similar, but for me, I get a sort of stinging in the soles of my feet if I do a lot of walking in mine. Maybe just need to keep going through the pain. Grin

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/03/2024 07:30

I always wear standard size 7 Madrids. They are the best shoes. I absolutely live in them during summer and hardly wear anything else. I can walk miles and miles in them.

You need to break them in, especially if you have not worn them before. Lots of vaseline is the way forward. But once you have broken them in they are the most comfortable shoes you will ever wear.

PinkTonic · 27/03/2024 07:33

I love all my Birkenstocks and have never had to break a pair in, they’re just comfortable from the off. I like Madrids and can walk for miles in them. I also got slippers for Christmas which are bliss.

Nannyfannybanny · 27/03/2024 07:35

TheChosenTwo,that's what I was trying to remember! Started nursing training in 1972,saw something similar on the orthopedic wards. We also had a psychiatristwho wore them with socks and long cheesecloth skirts, she was as mad as a box of frogs!I see a lot of my neighbours in their 80s 90s wearing similar things, with socks, shudder!! Yes, have already posted on the "socks with sandals"🤣.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/03/2024 07:45

I had a small window of my life worrying about "ugly shoes" but now I live in trainers, Birkenstocks and Clarks lace ups and couldn't care less. I have comfy feet and can walk for miles and miles.

Bearpawk · 27/03/2024 08:00

Wear them with thin socks around the house to wear them in - they can rub a bit at first.
Love mine -I have wide feet but need narrow fit in birks as they are SO wide fitting

dudsville · 27/03/2024 08:00

I've been wearing them for years, i find them really comfortable.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/03/2024 09:47

You really have to get the sizing right, I tried on and bought Ghiza in a size larger than I would normally get and they weren't comfy.

I like Arizona and Mayari and Papillio one strap.

Looking for Papillio one strap on Ebay - can't believe how many people put a manky pair on there, saying good condition.

hellswelshy · 27/03/2024 09:59

I admit I haven't got the originals but I bought a white pair from TK Maxx last summer and have worn and worn them. I have narrow feet, they seem fine as just adjusted the buckle. I didn't want to take them off on my last holiday even when wearing evening wear, so I just didn't 😆

KarlaKK · 27/03/2024 11:00

Hi Murphys, I couldn't size up as the bit that should be under my toe was then under the ball of my foot about a cm below my toes so uncomfortable. I think if you've got longer toes they work but mine are stubby . I am tempted to try again though (and waste more money).

bluecomputerscreen · 27/03/2024 11:03

I have short toes and have to go a size down. usually wear shoes size 40 or even 41 but birkies in 39 to get the toe position right.

lovemycbf · 27/03/2024 11:05

I wear the soft footbed Arizona sandles and they are true to size and fit my wide feet and are so so comfortable I have three pairs

LoseYourMoney · 16/04/2024 18:06

Birkenstock quality has gone right downhill. Their shoes are uncomfortable and ill fitting and I wouldn't recommend them now. The leather is hard and does not soften. The raised pattern on the footbeds is inconsistent and the sizing all over the place. I'll never buy them again.

Their customer service is appalling. Customers are returning orders bought online and not getting their refunds. Have a look at their record on Trustpilot. It's dire.

Mercurial123 · 16/04/2024 18:11

My feet love them. I can walk miles in them straight from the box. I buy a new pair of Mayaris every year in stone as it's a versatile colour.

Do you wear out a pair a year?

I've had mine for about 3/4 years and they aren't even close to worn out.

LenaLamont · 26/03/2024 23:10

You have Birkenstock shaped feet, or you haven’t.

If one of their standard footbeds fits, they are the comfiest shoes you will ever wear. If not, they are god-awful.

If you have Morton toes as I have (2nd toe longer than big toe), they are no good. The long toe doesn't fit inside the "rim" of the footbed and so just rubs.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 16/04/2024 18:58

Mine wear out quickly. As I walk on the outside of my foot.

Librarybooker · 16/04/2024 19:00

They are too wide for me and so can never be really comfy
