Need *really* robust cabin luggage ASAP.

I commute to London for half the week and have just had another wheel fall off my small cabin bag. (It’s an Aerolite one.). Had the same happen with the standard size version as well. They’re cheap cases.

So I’m looking to invest in one suitable for heavy duty use. Anyone got any recommendations?

Ideally need one standard cabin size and one easyJet under seat size.

Antler and Samsung are good cost vs quality ratio IMO.
Mine did regular flights 1-2 per month for years from 2015-2019 then Covid so now now they get wheeled out 3-4 x per year and are good as new.

if you want something deluxe Rimowa, all the “big boys” in the office have them as standard but I think the prices are a joke

OneMoreTime23 · 21/03/2024 10:32

Thanks.

Samsung?

Muji have great luggage. The smallest is Ryanair size, I have the next size up and the big one, both have survived multiple flights and the small one is used twice a month for worktrips by train. The brake feature is especially useful on the train trips. Samsonite is also good but don't go for the cheapest ones, I have had one crack right across the back.

Rimowa is NOT worth the price.

OneMoreTime23 · 21/03/2024 10:49

Muji only has a small one and its outside the easyJet allowances.

Antler don’t seem to do a small cabin case at all and Travelpro don’t have anything suitable either.

Brings and Riley also only seem to do the bigger cabin cases. I need a 45cm and a 55cm case.

We have small Samsung. Beautifully made but the expansion zip system is counterintuitive. The inner zip expands rather than the outer. If in a hurry it gets quite annoying.

Plus the 55cm cabin one we have came with all sorts of inner bits and pieces we never use. DH does 5 day trips quite often and now takes an IT Luggage 2 wheel for those trips. I’m not sure how long it will last but the inside is very simple and capacious.

We have Tripp cases in all sizes, the hard shell. They are excellent quality. The different airline requirements are listed under each case on the website.

SqueakyDinosaur · 21/03/2024 10:58

I have an Away cabin sized suitcase and I love it, but I think it's probably too big for the budget airlines.

Seainasive · 21/03/2024 11:01

I’ve been using a Longchamp one for very frequent travel for 12 years now and it still looks great.

irritatingly only available in the Men’s section of their website!

Antler do do cabin cases, I’ve taken them on EasyJet and BA. They are indestructible

Judylicious · 21/03/2024 11:01

My tumi case is amazing, love it to pieces.

there are loads of the larger cabin cases (56x45x25)but none that fit the underseat requirements. (45x36x20).

Samsung? As in televisions and phones? Can’t find any luggage made by them

Not great when you live hundreds of miles from their repair centre though. (We bought a whole set 20 years ago. Returning them under warranty when the wheels lost their rubber would have cost more than new cases.)

I don’t think you’ll find matching luggage if you want the same high quality brand for a EU budget airline and international carry on size. You might need to be more flexible in your search.

For that price I’d want someone to carry it for me!

Edited

Virtually all suitcases in the U.K. are repaired under warranty at K2 Global in Slough, so you’ll have the same issue with another brand.

They don’t have to be from the same company.

The broken case has managed 14 months and cost less than £40. Maybe that isn’t so bad but I’d like to be a bit more sustainable!

Interesting. I didn’t know that. Thank you.

The 45cm gets used 3 weeks a month and the 55cm one week a month. Both get used for international travel.

So the 45cm, which is the broken one, is the one that needs to be the most robust etc. But it seems hardly anyone makes them.

Tripp has 45cm hard shell ones on offer for £45 at the moment in a variety of colours. Can't get the link to post unfortunately!

I think that's because they just wouldn't sell enough. Everyone I know uses a backpack or shoulder bag as an under seat bag. For one thing, wheels take up too much of the already limited space.
