Gala event, can't wear shoes because of my back

Mxflamingnoravera · 21/03/2024 09:18

I have a big gala event to attend on Saturday, it's very dressy uppy and I'm racking my brains to find anything to wear. I had back surgery and it left me with a numb foot because my sciatic nerve was so compressed, it means I can't wear shoes. I wear trainers.
It's long dress evening wear, what do I put on my feet if I can't wear dainty shoes?
I had planned on wearing a long silky black bias cut dress. But I do not know what to wear on my feet. Any suggestions? It's on Saturday so I don't have much time for shopping.
I have loads of trainers, in different colours and some chunky boots which I can just about manage in but the boots would look like I was wearing wellies.

Or forget a dress and find a women's tuxedo with wide legged trousers and black boots/trainers?

Mrsjayy · 21/03/2024 11:00

I'd wear trainers I have a permanent disability I can't wear slip on shoes. So I mainly wear trousers If I'm out or I just wear lace shoes and dresses.

Black trainers with the laces replaced with silky ribbon. And a little flower made of the same ribbon on the top of the shoe in case it shows. Be comfortable. There's nothing worse than beautiful shoes and a painful feet prune face. Much better a relaxed smile and comfy shoes!

Rock the trainers and wear something that looks like you mean it, nothing frumpy and apologetic.

Trainers all the way!

if you have the budget there are all sorts of fancy over the top trainers out there. These are a start https://www.modainpelle.com/sale-c79/sale-trainers-c180/filicia-pink-metallic-leather-p12519

If you don’t have the budget for new, I agree with the suggestion upthread to lace a pair you own with ribbons and flowers or something.

I think something that stands out would be better than trying to hide plain black ones under a long dress.

Wear these OP. Problem solved - have a fabulous evening!

As a long time trainer lover, I would just own your predicament and buy a beautiful, flamboyant pair. In my mind this might be an excuse for getting some custom coloured ones?

I tend to try and keep a couple of pairs of trainers in good condition and only wear for going out and have others for every day stuff.

But I also love the ribbons idea up thread and I'm going to try this.

Skechers have shoe-like trainer comfort shoes. I’d def try something like that.

You’d be better just styling it out with actual trainers-these are HIDEOUS!

GentleGentileschi · 22/03/2024 15:37

How long post surgery are you? I have the same issue ☹️

BeyondMyWits · 22/03/2024 19:17

I have foot problems stemming from a prior break and can only wear soft and supportive shoes, trainers are my goto. Most "occasions" lately I have taken a walking stick for support. No one even mentions the footwear when you have a stick.

Mxflamingnoravera · 22/03/2024 19:39

@GentleGentileschi 18 months. My right foot is numb and on fire at the same time. I can't walk barefoot without limping and trainers with an orthotic insole is all I can wear to feel stable and secure.

I had ribbons as laces in Doc Martens under my very traditional meringue wedding dress Grin

I’ve got a few pairs of dressy sneakers, as I find heels or narrow shoes really uncomfortable due to an old injury to one foot. Kurt Geiger always has a few nice ones. It’s also worth checking on the tk maxx website, as they often have some nice ones at great prices too. Ribbons or gold laces is a great way to change the look.

theduchessofspork · 23/03/2024 09:19

Sparkly or metallic trainers - or plain ones with a nice ribbon

Don’t even think about making yourself uncomfortable, and have a great night

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/03/2024 09:28

I've got Moda in Pelle trainers in silver. Really comfortable and I wear them.all the time.

Mxflamingnoravera · 23/03/2024 09:47

Thanks for all the great ideas. Since my operation I've been swimming loads. This backfired this week, I now have tennis elbow in both arms! Right arm is so bad I cannot even lift a cup. I might just duck out of the whole event, elbow supports under a floaty evening dress with short sleeves are not my favourite look.
I'm so fed up of my body, I try to do the right thing and it backfires on me. I'm 62, in great health (apart from MSK issues) 54kg and I feel like I'm falling apart. I live on painkillers for my foot and now more painkillers for my arms. I know this is S&B but just needed a little rant about my slowly disintegrating body.

My son can't feel a foot because of a disability and wears an afo on it. We've had to cut his suit and hem the split to accommodate it for when he attends black tie events and he wears plain black smarts leather trainers. 🤷‍♀️🤣

It happens. And you need to wear what you need to wear.

I think sparkly trainers with ribbon laces sounds a great idea.
