Who actually wears Cabbagees & Roses?

*please excuse the typo in the title!

Newbie here. I'm from the US but love British style and follow British fashion and culture. There's one question to which I can't seem to find the answer - who is actually wearing Cabbages & Roses clothing?

I've really loved Cabbages & Roses lately, but few in the US seems to even be aware of this brand. I know it's a very small brand. I'm also aware that it is not "in style" or even very practical. It would be considered really "out-there" in the US.

My question is - is this brand something that is actually worn by British women? If so, who is actually wearing this brand? Is it 25 year old "Fashionistas", "Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs?"
Rich middle aged women? Younger girls with good jobs and large available balances on their credit cards? Mom types?

Have you ever seen someone wearing one of their signature flowy/billowy dresses in public? What type of person were they? How would you describe them?

Thank you for any insight!

Who can wear these? You seem to think any age can style them but do you need to be super slim or ethereal to make them look good? I could imagine looking like a pre-Raphaelite elfin-shepherdess / Violet Baudelaire The Costumer's Guide to Movie Costumes (costumersguide.com) but in reality I would look like I got entangled in my cosplay outfit / too old / too busty?

Who can wear them ? Anyone who likes the look of them and has the cash.

I'm 64, 5' 4" ish, a 14 if it's generous, a 16 if it's not. I wear Cabbages and Roses.

I so disagree with the mindset of "you have to be super slim or tall or young" or whatever to wear something.

What does "look good" even mean? My C&R Athena coat and dresses get so many compliments and I feel good wearing them.

I wish I had the confidence you have. This thread has been so lovely and inspirational.

It's been a been a lovely thread. I've discovered new shops and brands, even if it's only for online drooling over rather than actual purchases.

There's an instagrammer called vintage_dahling who wears C&R and lots of similar dresses of her own creation and looks wonderful in them. Her mum, in her 80s, also wears them sometimes. It's a lovely account.

In answer to your question, Oooo, yes I do knit. Do you?

My knitting is a bit sporadic and I'm more someone who reads about knitting than does it (many hours spent on Ravelry looking for the perfect item). But I am soon to finish a Missoni pattern from 1996, using mostly Rowan yarns, that I've been working on for about 5 years, so am getting excited. It's not the knitting it's the weaving in of the many, many, ends that's put me off doing it any quicker. I've finished a few other things meanwhile.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 01/04/2024 10:10

Oh Flo, isn't that jacket lovely?

Floisme · 01/04/2024 10:13

It is, isn't it MmePoppy. I'm now going to be spending the summer drumming my fingers waiting for the sales to start (although it'll quite likely be sold out by then). This is no way to live!

garlictwist · 01/04/2024 10:19

I have just googled them based on this thread. Lots of it looks like the kind of outfit Miss Haversham would wear to put the bins out. Not for me.

RoberttPostesChild · 01/04/2024 15:01

Anyone remembers Tulip and Nettles when they made everyday children clothes? Small DS in his flannel hero shirt and velour plus fours, small DD in cord or flannel Vichy smocks with velvet ribbon, omg, these children were meant to have a C&R mummy, what on earth was I thinking?

I'm now looking for a fantasy skirt to wear with my fantasy frock jacket to my fantasy wedding. Maybe this linen one....

https://www.cabbagesandroses.com/collections/ss24/products/simple-kilt-in-white-linen?variant=48261519933715

The pink frock coat over that linen skirt would make a fabulous alternative bridal outfit.

noodlezoodle · 01/04/2024 22:16

Argh, @Floisme, I am now hankering after that jacket too.

JMSA · 02/04/2024 08:55

Not my cup of tea, but I've just had a quick peek on Vinted and there's currently over 200 C&R pieces on there. I'd imagine they're much cheaper than new, so I hope this helps out any super fans!

HothouseFlower · 02/04/2024 11:05

Agree with the Magnolia Pearl comments! I see where they're going with it, but it all seems so horrendously overstyled.

Ewa i Walla has Noa Noa vibes, @OooScotland . It's how NN should have evolved, I agree it is totally ruined now. I still have knitwear from Noa Noa from the early/mid 2000s and it's gorgeous.

As we're now moving into warmer weather (she says hopefully) I've been lusting after Indian designers' take on florals and stripes.
Pero has a C&R feel, although pricey!

Ogaan India is a wonderful source of floaty dresses https://www.ogaan.com/clothing/dresses
For a traditional take on florals I recommend Vineet Rahul https://www.ogaan.com/designers/vineet-rahul
and for a modern take, Kharakapas

All made in 'proper' materials too! But you'll need a warm coat over the top for the sheep farm.

HothouseFlower · 02/04/2024 13:20

One for the farm:

MaryFuckingFerguson · 02/04/2024 13:31

All a bit Amish or twee for me.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 02/04/2024 13:41

This wedding outfit could be straight out of current Cabbages and Roses. It's from 1917.

Oh that's adorable @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle. The woman's jacket is especially gorgeous. Are they relatives of yours?

And I love that navy coat you posted above. I'm a sucker for a curved hem.

mm47 · 02/04/2024 14:32

sorry to interrupt / derail the C&R love, could I ask does anyone know how this CDG half skirt should be styled? I’ve got a pair of CDG harem/zouave pants which I love then sometimes hate (when I see my rear view 😉) and was scrolling eBay in the small hours when I came across it. Probably not going to buy this, more likely I am kidding myself that maybe one day I would get something like it made / but not sure how it should be worn - presumably not like McQueen bare bum trousers - just does anyone know whether it should be worn half in the front and half at the back or like a bustle or eEven an apron? And what sort of thing underneath #somanyquestions

Ps the C& R conversation is making me reconsider Cabbages & Roses, they used to have a shop in Simone’s Street and then Sydney Street and at the time I was underwhelmed although the promotional product photography was beautiful. Prefer Egg, Casey Casey etc for fantasy wafting about purposes - but that pink jacket is very pretty, flo. Need to check out all the other links.

mm47 · 02/04/2024 14:36

PPs on rereading it sounds like my zoaves are bare bottomed - I assure you they aren’t (bad grammar sorry)

MotherofGorgons · 02/04/2024 14:46

Not all the dresses are to my taste, but the coats are really beautiful, though way out of my price range. I can see them looking fabulous on some women ( not necessarily slim women).
