Can I make this dress less 'booby'

I've fallen in love with this dress, but sadly I have a semi-decent sized, yet fairly saggy boobs so I must wear a bra. I'm wondering if there is a way to alter this dress to remove some fabric from the bottom (I'll need it hemmed anyway) and made into a panel of some short to fill / close the deep plunging neck of this dress so it covers my boobs and allows me to wear a bra.

Does anyone know or have any other tips?

Would your boobs still have room if you stitched it closed a bit more? As in, start at the bottom of the V and bring it together with black thread to sort of “zip it up” a bit more?

parietal · 12/03/2024 22:26

Can you wear it with a black camisole underneath?

They would be very squished. Theres not enough fabric to stitch the bottom of the V together and as high up as I would need it without it pulling and looking very funny.

I think I'd need to alter it something like one of these maybe?

I just don't think that would look very polished. I'd like it to use the same fabric

If you're having a strip removed from the bottom to shorten it, the seamstress could probably add a strip to both sides of the neckline, which would make the meeting of the V higher.

Prawncow · 12/03/2024 22:39

I don’t know how much it would cost but would it be worth buying a size larger and having it altered? That way there’s more fabric to work with.

I think if I did this, the dress would just need taking in all over, and then still require the deep V neck adjusting.

This may work. I'll make a note of it and try and find a reputable seamstress. I wonder if a bridal boutique might be able to recommend one

I’d go for a nude camisole (in my own skin tone) to keep the style of the dress.

I'm not sure a panel in that quite large patterned fabric would work, a camisole might look better.

Dorsetlover · 12/03/2024 22:51

It's not a cheap dress - I would be tempted to keep looking as I'm not sure if it wouldn't totally alter the style of the dress- which is what you are paying for.

ditalini · 12/03/2024 22:51

I wouldn't do it in the same fabric. I think squaring off the neckline with that pattern would ruin the look of it and possibly be difficult to place/match the pattern.

I do think it looks nice with a plain insert such as your graying out in the photo. Difficult to tell though as dresses like that look altogether different with breasts in terms of drape/gape.

Have you seen it and tried it on in real life? I'd try with a plain, dark camisole first before you consider alterations.

RandomMess · 12/03/2024 22:53

You could add a modesty panel in a plain colour but I agree try with a camisole first.

I think this would be the best idea, so it keeps its line, but is less revealing. Nicer than adding a panel or a cami underneath

This is the dress on the website. I'm not sure that would work. Matching the pattern isn't going to be easy. It really gapes.

Tbh OP it's a bit "medallion man" style.

I like @HappyAsASandboy ’s idea - I would caution against something goes straight across and focus on bringing the V higher. I did the straight across thing with a plunging jumpsuit and it totally changed the look and made it feel a bit matronly.

CatLevelCare · 12/03/2024 23:19

I wouldn't close the neckline.

How about just rocking a good bra in one of the colours, or using the cut off fabric sewn over your bra to match?

Moier · 12/03/2024 23:22

Loads of brides dresses have a skin tone mesh panel put in if low down like this dress.

Fortitudinal · 12/03/2024 23:22

A simple black vest top/cami would look gorgeous under that beautiful dress.

I did try that with my own nice bra, but it just looked really bad. Just looked like the dress was falling off me and was not appropriate for the event I'll be wearing it to at all.

The bra peaks out here like this and just didn't look right. I might try and find corset type bra and see if that helps fill the V so it looks less bra like

The dress has keyhole cut out at the back as well. It's more obvious on Harvey Nick's website. And on the red version.

So putting a camisole under it is going to have a bit of black showing through at the back too and possibly the back of a bra. I think those options might both be ok if just viewed from the front but from the back as well, I think you risk looking as if you've come out with your vest on because it's a bit chilly.

This is actually what I would prefer. The straight across panel isn't really my ideal look, but I have to admit maintaining the V didn't initially come across as an option because normally I'd just sew / pin the V at the bottom to bring it up, but that's just not possible with this one.

Wear it back to front so the deep v is the back. Then wear a stick on /backless bra.
