Teen DD black tie - something to go over dress

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 12/03/2024 06:52

My teen DD has a black tie sports dinner at a golf club. We've found a lovely dress which looks fab (blue one link below) but she thinks she'll be cold and I think she wants the option just to cover up a bit. Any ideas?

Shawl

Nutellanjam · 12/03/2024 07:09

Def black shawl

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 12/03/2024 09:23

She'll end up fiddling about with a shawl and it'll either fall off or she'll have to knot it to keep it on, which will look clumsy and odd.

It's not a style of dress I much like but if you (general you) do I think you just have to go with it. I don't think anything is going to look great over it.

You could try something like this worn unbuttoned or even just over her shoulders.

Ghost satin cardigan

Violetta Satin Cardigan

Made using our signature Eco Vero satin fabric, our Violetta cropped cardigan with front buttons and ribbed detailing is perfect for layering this season. Layer over our Margot top and pair with jeans or trousers.

I'd say a shawl or pashmina. I wear them a lot and they don't fall off.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 12/03/2024 11:29

Thanks. I was relieved we found a dress she liked as she's so picky...! I'll get her to try with a cardigan she's talking about taking her blooming crocs to change into later on Blush

A crochet short sleeve cardi in silver or black, with one button? I used to wear them when going out out over dresses like that in the 1990s/2000s?

Like this? Purple Hanger New Ladies Knitted Short Sleeve Bolero Shrug Womens Crochet Pattern Top amzn.eu/d/7MsWc8j sure nicer ones are available!

I’ve seen some faux fur wraps or little jackets on amazon that look good and would be properly warm unlike some of the thin bolero type things.

this is the jacket but this brand also do lots of wrap styles (with fastenings so less annoying to keep on)

Sorry, mine is without the T shirt bit, so a sheer cardi / jacket thing.

mentalbandwidth · 12/03/2024 12:50

Crocs are more sensible for later on instead of wandering around in stocking soles which I did in my yoof 😁 🫣

WineThirty · 12/03/2024 12:57

A lot of these suggestions wont keep her much warmer than just the dress. What tends to happen is that the girls borrow the guys' dinner jackets. Which obviously leaves them cold but I guess shirts are warmer than strappy dresses.
You could go with the theme and get her a tuxedo style jacket

RatzTailz · 12/03/2024 13:03

Gorgeous dress.

I'd go for something faux fur like a little shrug/ jacket. V glam.

Not a pashmina- they aren't warm, slip off and seem a bit dated to me.

mitogoshi · 12/03/2024 13:07

Silky cardigan is the easier option but I love a pashmina myself.

JackNoMiddleNameReacher · 12/03/2024 13:10

Agree @WineThirty I’d also go for a dinner jacket personally.

In fact I always have done.

Its still considered a bit ‘out there’

That's a much better suggestion than shrugs, pashminas etc.

She might find a second hand dinner jacket in a charity shop/ vintage shop, failing that a silky unbuttoned cardigan

Or maybe borrow one from an older brother.
I love that slightly oversized look, it speaks I’m comfortable in my own skin and independent.

SirenSays · 12/03/2024 13:39

Little shrugs and things are pretty but not very warm. If she's worried about the cold I'd do either oversized blazer, faux fur jacket or bodysuit style shape wear for a base layer underneath.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 12/03/2024 15:21

What colour dress - the blue? I would go for a short jacket / bolero in white/cream/silver.

PoppingTomorrow · 12/03/2024 15:24

Last time those dresses were in we'd have worn a velvet blazer
