Teen DD black tie - something to go over dress

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 12/03/2024 06:52

My teen DD has a black tie sports dinner at a golf club. We've found a lovely dress which looks fab (blue one link below) but she thinks she'll be cold and I think she wants the option just to cover up a bit. Any ideas?

Velvet blazer, faux fur jacket...

JonVoightBaddyWhoGrowls · 12/03/2024 15:27

P)lease please do not go for anything in black with that jacket.

I think it depends - is she worried about being cold inside the venue? I assume she's not looking for something to wear en route?

When I was a teen, these sorts of events got very hot and sweaty fairly quick. So something to wear over for the first part of the evening is good but it doesn't need to be too substantial. I'd second suggestions of a really good shawl or pashmina. Or some kind of bolero style cardigan/jacket.

All the teens / early 20's fold at a number of weddings we've been at recently have changed into Crocs or DMs by the start of the dancing - I admired how much they placed practicality and comfort first!

Edited

I've had fold up flats from Cocorose for decades for that. They fold up and fit into even a small handbag or a suit jacket pocket and have a fold up bag for your own shoes.

An oversized blazer would look cool. Cardi/shrug/shawl all a bit old fashioned.

frogswimming · 12/03/2024 19:53

I'd go for a black tuxedo jacket as well, more youthful and fashionable.

BestZebbie · 12/03/2024 19:56

The standard is that girls don't bring anything as an extra layer, then they get cold and borrow a dinner jacket from a boy. So just bring your own tuxedo jacket in a bag.
(The male tip is that after an hour the boys wear their bow ties untied around their necks, so if you can't tie a bow-tie you need a permanently sewn clip-on to start with then you carry an untied one in your pocket and switch them over quickly once things get going).

Definitely black blazer. What shoes is she wearing? In the summer mine wore white converse with the same colour dress. If the event is in March, she could wear boots, plus blazer. If she's a Crocs kinda girl anyway!

Thanks. I was relieved we found a dress she liked as she's so picky...! I'll get her to try with a cardigan she's talking about taking her blooming crocs to change into later on Blush

I took my converse shoes in my bag to an industry awards dinner. Very make dominated industry. When I changed my shoes to hit the dance floor a few hours in, I was declared a genius. This still comes up 2 years later.

Velvet jacket might work , found this on Vinted

My dd similar they just wear a boys jacket - come out later in crocs and hoody!

Ermengarde · 12/03/2024 23:18

When my 18YO DD and her friends got similarly dressed up for a party recently this is what one of them was wearing Urban Outfitters Slub Knit Bolero

ChangedAppointment · 14/03/2024 16:42

Tux-type jacket definitely. You can get silver oversized ones too. Shawls and bolero cardis/jackets are very dated and ageing. I wouldn’t touch those and am in my fifties!

Saxendi · 14/03/2024 17:01

Definitely a jacket, boleros shawls would look very dated!

Justsewsew · 14/03/2024 21:23

Hmmm - am I being daft to suggest a white t shirt underneath it? I would have thought that was more the young adult's style these days

Sidebeforeself · 14/03/2024 21:27

Can’t believe you didn’t think shawl/pashmina OP..I mean they are outdated but they are pretty obvious options!
Shrugs - god no.Awful even when they were “in”
Love the idea of an oversized jacket/tuxedo

Sidebeforeself · 14/03/2024 21:29

Or leather ( fake?) biker jacket?

tittybumbum · 14/03/2024 21:34

Oversized blazer. All this bolero/sparkley cardi/shawl stuff is for old ladies.

Trying to think what DD and her friends would take

They'd just take a normal hoodie along

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/03/2024 06:40

Definitely a jacket. I have a teen dd. She wouldn’t wear a pashmina / bolero. That tuxedo from new look is great. Otherwise you may pick something up in the sale at Next perhaps. We got dd one from there for a wedding. She also picks things up on vinted.

Illpickthatup · 15/03/2024 12:25

What about this? I have the same one. Got it for a wedding. They have it in other colours too but the navy would go nice with her dress.

A lot depends on her size and shape. The oversized tux jacket or long blazer looks good on tall people but isn’t terribly flattering if you are petite IMO.

If she is petite I would do something like the Urban Outfitters knitted bolero linked upthread - which is not at all like the old fashioned boleros. Or there are a few ultra cropped jumpers around which could work.
