Most practical backpack I've ever owned
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EEBS9O0
Three smaller compartments big enough for washbags, clothes, phone and laptop adaptors & chargers as well as a large main compartment big enough for a laptop, books, lunchbox, and two side pouches for water bottles
Hard wearing, very tough
Had mine since July 2015

Another Cabin Zero lover here- they often have 20% off events so worth waiting for one if you can. Their website has a filter that shows you what airlines accept which of their bags as hand luggage.

I’d recommend picking any colour other than black/grey/navy- I have a pink one and it’s how my DH spots me in a crowd!

You need to work out what you are using for your personal item. If that’s a backpack as well, how will you carry them both? One on the front and one on the back is very awkward.

You need a personal item as well in case you are made to gate check your cabin bag.

I usd my Reisenthel rucksack on Ryanair for 3 days in Dublin in September. Watch out, you may become addicted and buy weekend, shopper, toiletry case, foldups etc all in the same design!

This one, also available from Amazon. I use it a lot when travelling, it has broad padded shoulder straps and opens fully. It also has a separate laptop/document compartment. I travel reasonably often so I’ve got packing down to a fine art. If you’re only allowed one piece of hand luggage, this will take a handbag shoved in the top section with all your other bits in a packing cube underneath.

I have this and I did 8 days in Montreal with it. I love that you can pack away the straps and carry it like a holdall

@PrinceLouisWeirdFinger

Great bag and discounts right now!!

EverybodyLTB · 15/03/2024 12:16

I have an Osprey Fairview 40L and it’s brilliant. It has a clamshell opening and the hip and shoulder supports make it so easy to carry. Def recommend

NellePorter · 15/03/2024 13:39

I have a Nordace Sienna, had it for years and it's great

theusualwednesday · 15/03/2024 15:33

Some brilliant suggestions.

I am trying to reuse stuff I have, and I have found my old kankrjaven [sp?] is brilliant with a little insert i got from ebay for compartments and zipped pocket etc. Fits with no issue under easyjet seats, very squashable and then can be used as a day bag at destination. I have a tiny crossbody flat bag that holds my phone, a battery and lead and passport that I have under coat as just part of my outfit, then I use that for evening bag at destination.

I have a cabin max. It’s the right size for Ryan air which is has one of the smallest allowances. It expands but don’t over pack it so it bulges. It’s lightweight with some handy front pockets to put your passport in. Available from Amazon or next.

The airline don't allow a personal item as well so this will be my only item of carry on.

So what happens if the overhead bins are full and you have to gate chekc your cabin bag ? You wont have any bag for your flight!

Is it a very small aircraft ?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/03/2024 18:52

@CALLI0PE the small bag allowed without cost on Ryanair is designed to go under your seat . You post extra for a suitcase style cabin bag to go in overhead lockers .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/03/2024 18:54

Personally I would also take a very small
Cross body bag for my money, phone and passport and wear under my jacket to board . I'd allow room in my rucksack in case I was pulled up on it though .

The small bag without costs on Ryanair is called a personal item.

But the The Op just said that the airline she is travelling with have no personal item , so it can’t be Ryan air.

Posters on this thread have assumed that the OP is asking about a cabin bag, that’s why they have mostly linked to bags that are up to 55cm. That’s the bags that go in the overhead lockers on most planes.

Every airline has their own sizes for cabin bags and personal items - that’s why it’s essential to know the airline ( or at least the sizes in cm or inches ).

Most airlines have weight limits for cabin bags and sone also have them for personal items. That’s also good to know as there’s no point in recommending a great bag that weights 2.5kg if the weight limit is 7kg.

They really haven't. Most people have linked to small bags or ones actually labelled underseat.

Ryanair is indeed incredibly stingy but most other airlines let you take the 45x36x20 size that I mentioned in my earlier post.

Seizethedog · 20/03/2024 08:47

I don’t think easyJet does anymore.

Does it fit Ryanair size requirements? I have been considering one of those.

Yes they do. That's the size for under seat bags. The bags you used to be able to take free but now have to pay for are a "large cabin bag" which is 56x46x25.

Thanks very much for this tip- I will also grab a small cross body bag

It's some "partner of TUI" airline flying out of Gatwick
