Films where the costume department and designers have got it right or clothes you’d want to wear?

I am watching The Spy Who Loved Me and the main female character has an amazing wardrobe. The clothes wouldn’t look dated today, for example a belted shirt dress.

When Harry Met Sally.

Barbie

Queen's Gambit.

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/03/2024 19:54

Any film for which Ann Roth is the costume designer. She has an extraordinary eye.

Summerdew · 09/03/2024 19:55

The shoes in Cruel Intentions.
Stephanie’s wardrobe in Grease 2

Queen's Gambit.

I was coming on to say that, the clothes were stunning.

Also more recently that thing Michelle Keegan was in - Fool me once. Her coat budget must have been massive!

EternalSunshine19 · 09/03/2024 19:57

Clueless. was obsessed then and still obsessed now

Workingmytickettoparadise · 09/03/2024 20:07

@EternalSunshine19 Clueless has to be my favourite film and the wardrobe is just amazing!

@Workingmytickettoparadise i completely agree 😀

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/03/2024 20:18

It’s a terrible film, but Kim Basinger’s wardrobe in Nine and a Half Weeks was awesome. I got a trench coat and a hat because of that film, lol. I am guessing her wardrobe is not what the film makers wanted to be memorable, lol…

TheFTrain · 09/03/2024 20:53

I've always loved Winona's low-key Gap vibes wardrobe in Reality Bites and Demi's wardrobe in Indecent Proposal.

Alabama Worley's wardrobe from True Romance is unforgettable and aligns with her perfectly.

BestIsWest · 09/03/2024 20:55

Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair.

HumphreyCobblers · 09/03/2024 22:14

I thought the costumes in the Keira knightly P and P were excellent. They really showed the relative wealth of the characters. Caroline Bingley was exquisitely dressed whilst the Bennet sisters had pretty clothes but nowhere near as costly looking.

LunaNorth · 09/03/2024 22:19

Emma Stone in Poor Things (especially the wedding dress) and Cruella, for sheer theatre.

Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal.

Diane Keaton in Annie Hall.

Jennifer Anniston in The Morning Show.

And Carrie Bradshaw. Horror of a character, but the clothes are iconic.

EcstaticMarmalade · 09/03/2024 22:32

Another vote for the remake of the Thomas Crowne Affair. The wardrobes of both leads are amazing.

geoger · 09/03/2024 22:35

Dangerous Liaisons - absolutely love the dresses.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 09/03/2024 22:36

Little Women, I loved all the costumes more than the film itself.

Another vote for Pride and Prejudice

The Guilded Age, the costumes were simply extraordinary and really showed the difference between the old money and the robber barons, totally wonderful.

Lumiodes · 09/03/2024 22:37

The first series of Only Murders had fabulous outfits for Selena Gomez. I copied several of them! Sadly the following series outfits weren’t as good or copy-able.

LillyLeaf · 09/03/2024 22:41

I've just watched Poor Things, the costumes are stunning.

justasmalltownmum · 09/03/2024 22:41

Bridgerton

Claudereigns · 09/03/2024 22:41

The clothes worn by Sue in Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2. It was the 80's, but her clothes were classic and would be wearable in any decade since. You'd need to be very slim, young and confident to carry off the little red party dress though.

Diversion · 09/03/2024 22:44

The King and I. Deborah Kerr's dresses were completely impractical and huge but amazing. I cannot even think about the weight of the outfits or the time which she would have spent getting dressed, but wow!

Shetlands · 09/03/2024 22:47

Another vote for Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown affair.

Also Fiona Shaw's wardrobe in Killing Eve.

SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts · 09/03/2024 22:50

Chicago - I love 1920s clothes.

Oceans 11 & 12. George and Brad looked immaculate.

merryandbrightdelight · 09/03/2024 22:51

Michelle Keenan's character in Fool Me Once

QueSyrahSyrah · 09/03/2024 22:52

Everything everyone wears in The Gilded Age.

Granted I might look a bit out of place in Sainsbury's in any of it but the dresses and the hats are all so gorgeous.

dimllaishebiaith · 09/03/2024 22:55

Olivia in Scandal, both her work wear and her casual clothes were impeccable
