Men in 40s: where to buy good quality clothes for DH

Jennywren2000 · 07/03/2024 10:51

I know- he should buy his own. But in reality DH is wearing the same things that he has had since 2003 when we met.

He works in professional job, is relatively senior and always looks nice & fairly smart but really needs a few new office type clothes and things suitable for wearing to meetings with clients etc.

Pre Covid he would wear a suit, but this is no longer needed. Generally wears chinos & a shirt type outfits. He’s tall and slim and clean, but doesn’t really care about clothes. He doesn’t like itchy jumpers.

Where can I look for style tips or brands? Would especially like to hear from people who have a DH who cares about this and looks smart and stylish.

Sorry & thanks!

I am aiming for a capsule wardrobe type approach

I think the Charles Tyrwitt polo shirts look smart, especially under a nice jumper in winter! DH tends to wear them, chinos and a nice belt with some shoes (normally Loake or similar) to the office day to day. They also do some really nice quarter zips (merino) that look good in winter and linen shirts for summer. Quality is really good and the price point is really reasonable, especially if he's looking to find out what he likes to wear.

What industry is he in? That definitely sways what sort of "smart" to aim for! DH is similar, suits pre Covid, now it's polos and trousers mostly.

RM Williams also very good - lovely quality trousers and shirts, smart but casual style

Jennywren2000 · 07/03/2024 11:00

Thanks that’s really helpful. It’s a city type job, eg accounting, law, banking type role. Quite traditional.

My husband (lecturer) lives in his Jack & Jones Chinos and an assortment of polo shirts

Jennywren2000 · 07/03/2024 11:07

@Midnlghtrain I was looking at Charles Tyrwitt earlier and there is a huge selection of shirts. Eg poplin, twill, non iron etc. Do you know what type are nicest? Or is that just a personal choice thing. Stuck at home with small kids so hoping to shop online.

Gant is made for the middle-aged professional man!

Midnlghtrain · 07/03/2024 11:17

@Jennywren2000

He has one in every colour pretty much, they're all cotton! Definitely personal choice on the fabric, he's got some (unsure of the name) that are super soft - just the regular looking polos! Agree with PP on Gant too, that's another fave 😊

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/03/2024 11:20

DH (40s) had a lot of success with that clothes subscription service that went bust (can't remember its name) and is now considering Lookeiro.

Cauliflowery · 07/03/2024 11:22

We're on a different budget I suspect so no recommendations, but just to say don't feel bad about finding his clothes, enjoy it! I too have a tall slim partner and I love buying his clothes. It is a joy to dress someone whose body goes straight up and down and on whom the clothes do what they are predicted to do.

Calculuses · 07/03/2024 11:22

I like DH's stuff from Crew Clothing. Cutting edge it is not, but it's lovely quality.

OldMrsHempstock · 07/03/2024 11:26

My DH doesn't need to be smart so this might not be helpful, but he does like to be tidy and well groomed. He's tall, athletic, late 40s and pretty much lives in Superdry.

Jennywren2000 · 07/03/2024 11:29

Thanks everyone, lots of good suggestions. I’m sure he will be very appreciative! 😂

Really? My husband loves the style of Gant clothes but they appear to be cut for beanpoles not anyone with middle aged paunch.

coofffeee · 07/03/2024 12:07

Tog 24 is ok and if your lucky there will be a sale on 😉(there is always a sale on).

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 07/03/2024 12:08

Good quality and style are two different things.

Please ensure he will wear the style and then look at the quality.

Jennywren2000 · 07/03/2024 12:45

I totally agree @DistinguishedSocialCommentator
I quite like fashion & take care in my own appearance, enjoy clothes etc. I just find it difficult to know where to start with a man. In part it’s probably because we have been married for a long time and I haven’t actually really been looking at other men and noticing whether I like their clothes.

He looks good in his clothes but I think it all just needs refreshing. He definitely doesn’t need a new look, just a revival and refresh of what has always suited him which is quite simple, smart sort of clothes.

Take him out with you. This is what we do.

Not everything suits everyone, not even super fit people so IMO, go out together and concentrate on what he likes and feels comfortable in Good luck.

Mine’s definitely got a beer belly middle-aged paunch and they fit!

D20 · 07/03/2024 13:30

My tall and getting slimmer DH was introduced to lots of new brands via Stitchfix and is lamenting its loss now he has lost some weight and nothing fits. Plus he detests shopping so only having to deal with the headspace and trying on of new clothes once every three months was perfect for him.

One brand that a PP mentioned is reliable but not entirely exciting is Crew Clothing (slim leg chinos and half zip jumpers mainly).

His more formal shirts are the twill double cuff ones from Charles Tyrwitt, hes also got a few polos from there that get dragged out every year, and his single cuff more casual linen shirts are Timberland outlet.

bananabreadbatshit · 07/03/2024 13:33

Carhartt WIP, Ralph Lauren and Farah are staples for my DH.

Mudflaps · 07/03/2024 13:37

Gant quality has decreased dramatically, my husband used to wear a lot of it (too much of it really), he purchased some jumpers last year (online from the store he's always bought in person from) and one was immediately returned because the underarm seams were faulty, the stitching had missed the seam and there were holes, the remaining three all developed holes in the same area within a couple of wears. Seemingly the country of manufacture had changed which lead to the poor quality.

SiriAlexa · 07/03/2024 13:37

Hackett

anon2022anon · 07/03/2024 13:40

For a bit more fashionable casual clothing, DP really likes Percival- he has 5-6 of their t-shirts with the embroidered little kitsch logos, and a couple of thin knit jumpers that wash well. The sales are good too.
