Men in 40s: where to buy good quality clothes for DH

Jennywren2000 · 07/03/2024 10:51

I know- he should buy his own. But in reality DH is wearing the same things that he has had since 2003 when we met.

He works in professional job, is relatively senior and always looks nice & fairly smart but really needs a few new office type clothes and things suitable for wearing to meetings with clients etc.

Pre Covid he would wear a suit, but this is no longer needed. Generally wears chinos & a shirt type outfits. He’s tall and slim and clean, but doesn’t really care about clothes. He doesn’t like itchy jumpers.

Where can I look for style tips or brands? Would especially like to hear from people who have a DH who cares about this and looks smart and stylish.

Sorry & thanks!

John Simons in Chiltern St, London will fit him out to the nines!

Following with interest! My DH finds it near impossible to find good quality menswear that looks nice. A lot of stuff looks too "young" and then some of the more expensive brands can be a bit old fashioned so it's a strange inbetween 😂

Ralph Lauren shirts last well, but they're so much more expensive than they used to be (I used to get a lot from TK maxx but they have increased in price quite a bit)

END clothing have a good range of things I think.

Paul Smith has nice stuff too.

snowmichael · 20/03/2024 15:48

You say he "really needs a few new office type clothes"

Does HE think he does?
Or is this coming only from you?

Just think how awfully this would be received in this forum if it was a man asking for advice about where to buy clothes for his wife because she has found what she's happy to wear in the early noughties and is sticking with it

Carhartt WIP, Ralph Lauren and Farah are staples for my DH.

Carhartt and RL for mine, too, along with Common Projects for casual shoes/trainers which still work with work chinos, etc.

He seems to just find the brand(s) he likes and then only ever buys things from only those brands, though, which is a bit...unadventurous!

Tetsuo · 20/03/2024 23:48

This is very bad.

Could you imagine men having a conversation about how to dress their wives?

No!

You've got to let him dress himself. For good or bad.

One doesn't dress people past about 12.

Tetsuo · 20/03/2024 23:53

And a grown man with a professional job has resources.

He's presumably not an absolute idiot. Let him find his own clothes. Or ask his contemporaries.

Tetsuo · 20/03/2024 23:55

Or pay someone.

minipie · 21/03/2024 00:19

DH has a lot of

Charles Tyrwhitt & TM Lewin shirts
Hackett (not recently)
Hugo Boss (their chinos fit him)
Everlane for casual t shirts etc
Cashmere half zip jumpers - these are everywhere but try John Lewis, Pure, Denner, Boden or Brand Alley for non silly prices

Mallani · 21/03/2024 08:39

Spoke are good for trousers (fit all lengths and widths, even odd ones, so you can get a really good fit) www.spoke-london.com

Eton are good for shirts - www.etonshirts.com

Puffalicious · 21/03/2024 08:51

Could I suggest the obvious- Boden/ M&S/ Landsend as well as Charles Tyrwitt.

My DP is older
-50- and doesn't need work gear (tradesman) but is very stylish outside of work. He uses Zara/ Boden/ Merc/ Landsend (great quality tshirts & jeans & hoodies) and very expensive outdoor brands (he is outdoorsy, not just for parading around in 😀).

I know a guy who chooses his wife’s clothes. With her consent of course. She’s clueless but likes to look good, he’s very stylish, interested, and used to work in the fashion industry. Everyone’s a winner. Isn’t that what partnership and coupledom is all about?

Amberlady · 21/03/2024 09:09

Appreciate that was a bit off topic but in response to Tetsuo.

LoveHartnett · 21/03/2024 09:24

Seasalt menswear are really good quality, and have quite the range now

princesssparkle9985 · 21/03/2024 09:26

Hi OP, I haven’t read the tips you have already got but my husband asked me for help with this recently and then he went shopping v successfully. This is the list we made. We then mix and matched shirts and chinos to make about 15 different configurations and he actually took photos of them laid on the bed so he has inspiration on his phone!
He shops from Massimo Dutti, Hugo Boss, Lyle and Scott jumpers, Gant, Louis Copeland. In that recent shopping spree he got Brax chinos for first time and loves them. He also loved the shirt brand Strensoms.

Thanks. I’ve got him some M&S slim stretch chinos, a pair of boots from Bobbies, a jacket, a couple of cashmere jumpers & some Charles Tyrwitt shirts.

I knew there would be the comments about him buying his own clothes: I don’t think he’s every bought himself any new clothes. The only new things he’s had have been given to him for birthdays and Christmas. I have way more interest in this sort of thing than he does.

He’s perfectly capable of asserting himself if he feels patronised by me buying him things and perfectly capable of buying them himself if I don’t want to do it. We have a pretty healthy relationship. It just falls low down on his list of priorities and comes slightly higher on mine.

Thank you for all the helpful advice!

Also he doesn’t use Mumsnet, so y’know, where else would you seek out such knowledge!

Spoke of London are a great option. As men get older fit is more important. Spoke sell all the in between waist and leg length sizes, as well as 3 choices for thigh width. Men need to move away from most jeans as they get closer to 50. Spoke sell a Jean style chino called Fives, I highly recommend them if your DH wants to still look a bit stylish. Wear with brogues or sneakers to dress up or down.

Notreadytoretire · 15/02/2025 14:47

These are the best tips I've found for men over 40, use these basic rules to avoid trying to look too young. No skinny-ripped-faded jeans, any top with large logo, hoodies, puffs jackets and finally pumps like Vans.

Everything else is pretty much fine. He likes chinos try dressing them down with Sneakers, Hifiger, Gant or Boss do nice ones with a chunky white sole. Avoid itchy jumpers by wearing cotton jumpers, the brands mentioned will look stylish. Keep to round neck instead of v neck.
