What trainers for an almost 50 year old?

theferry · 05/03/2024 19:42

I have a pair of Skechers that I like for the arch support, but my DD tells me they’re mumsy/very uncool. Any suggestions for trainers that an almost 50 year old can wear without looking stupid?

Whatever you like! I find Nike Air Max good for arch support. I also like my Fitflop Rally but suspect your DD would disapprove.

I've discovered Hogan trainers and love them but nearly passed out when I saw what they cost - €450!!!

WhompingWillows · 05/03/2024 19:49

Hoff?

Copelia · 05/03/2024 19:53

I love my 327s but they're not cool (very comfortable though). Saw Zadie Smith in some Nike Air Max recently and she looked great. Why would a 50yo look stupid in trainers? They work for everyone.

To add- I think the only ones that aren't great is when someone has tried to find a trainer that has been adapted for older people, like a normal trainer with an elderly twist, like getting one of those phones with the big buttons. Just pick a pair that you like the look of and feel good on, no need to overthink it.

I think by 50 you’ve earned the right to wear whatever trainers you damn well please.

I’m 50 this year and I have Hoff, Gazelles, Converse, Golden Goose, Axel Arigato, Stan Smiths, plus ASICS for running.

I don’t feel remotely stupid in any of them, and if anyone disagrees I really don’t give a shite 😂

Mylippy · 05/03/2024 20:00

Air max for sure now they are cool

Xyz1234567 · 05/03/2024 20:00

Wear what you like. IfI listened to my daughter, I wouldn't even dare to set foot outside the front door! I wear Skechers and my daughter says the same. I care not one jot.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/03/2024 20:03

I had some black ASIC trainers when I was about 50, my DD appropriated them and they saw her nearly all the way through uni.

But what will make anyone look older and more 'uncool' than they need to is uncomfortable shoes.

HappierTimesAhead · 05/03/2024 20:05

VEJA trainers look great with everything or try Gola for a slightly cheaper but similar look.

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 05/03/2024 20:08

Sketchers are fine loads of people wear them

I have new balance too

Wear what you like and you'll feel better and remember "those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter" F it I say!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/03/2024 20:09

I’d wear whatever you like. I tend towards plantar fasciitis but can wear Air Max and New Balance 327 amongst others. Have had to give up my Gazelles.

I wouldn’t do Skechers.

MorrisZapp · 05/03/2024 20:12

I liked the look of Hoff but when I tried them on the tongue dug into my ankle.

theferry · 05/03/2024 20:12

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m not a trainer-y kind of person and only have the one pair of Skechers, but they need replacing now. Don’t really care what DD thinks, but I am wondering if I’m missing out on something really nice. I quite like converse, but almost every kid in DDs school wears them so I’m not sure.

Air max try a pair on

2chocolateoranges · 05/03/2024 20:14

I’m 47 and live in converse(they don’t give much support) and have recently treated myself to Nike Dunks which are so so comfy. I did have to ask my 20yr old if I was too old for them but they assured me I wasn’t!

I’d go into say Office and a sportswear shop and just have a try on session. That’s what I did last time I wanted trainers. M&S do their own brands if you just want a cheaper pair to start off.

LunaNorth · 05/03/2024 20:22

I’d think twice about wearing M&S trainers - that can be a bit ageing.

Stan Smiths or Nike Internationalist are good entry-level trainers.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 05/03/2024 20:26

Are these for exercise or just walking? If the former I'd get a gait analysis

HarrietStyles · 05/03/2024 20:37

Are you looking for sports/running style trainers to wear with sports leggings? Or more daytime casual trainers to wear with jeans/trousers? As I’d recommend different ones.

If you need arch support then avoid Vejas and converse at all costs. They are totally flat and excruciating to walk in for someone who needs a bit of arch support, trust me!

pinkpale · 05/03/2024 21:05

I'm in my 60's and have just bought some Allbirds Treerunners For comfort first and foremost but I'm told I'm on trend...who knows?

Sussurations · 05/03/2024 21:10

I’ll be 50 next year and I’ve been wearing New Balance 574s since I was 19. Not the same pair, obviously. I wouldn’t particularly recommend Converse, because they are very flat and don’t give any support. They are pretty classic though.

Puma or Gola.
