What screams frumpy?

What makes something/someone frumpy? It's hard to define. I know MN can get upset at this word.

Frumpy to me is anybody who doesn't care about style or what they look like. Which is up to them.

Sometimes I wish I didn't care! I'd be a lot richer.

But styles change so quickly one womans style is anothers frump!

For example a couple of years ago mom jeans were all the rage and yet I can remember growing up that the frumpiest thing you could wear was mom jeans!
No doubt a few things people are on here calling frumpy will be the height of fashion in a few years time!

There's nothing like these threads to make you feel paranoid and shit about yourself.

@Jamesblema I hate unpainted toenails. I remember people screaming at me when I posted this on mn before.

I'll remember to tell my DM this. My DM who at 82 rocks Lucy and Yak dungarees, Jigsaw striped long sleeved tops, Adidas Gazelles in bright colours and the odd Whistles piece. She wears nice Birkies but has never really wanted to paint her toenails.

Which is why I ignore half of them.

At least 2 of my friends think I dress very well. I just DGAF nowadays but hasn't always been this way. Very self conscious when younger.

Everything for sale on this site is frumpy. My American niece recommended it. https://artemesiamade.com/collections/apparel-shop-all
Does anyone like it? Not cheap, either.

Shapeless wrinkled sacks. They may suit some, they wouldn't suit me.

That's not bad. A bit Sister Wife-y and not my style but I wouldn't go down the overall route of frumpsville. No doubt you have to be slim to wear it. Where my friend in USA lives, next to Dutch County, maybe the Amish etc would wear this there... but I think they make most of their own clothes.

Winter3000 · 05/03/2024 15:12

Boatneck tops
Waterfall cardigans
Super long cardigans
Three quarter length trousers
Knife pleat skirts - so dowdy
Puff sleeves

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 05/03/2024 15:17

Cheap joggers, a fleece and sketchers trainers ..... like I'm wearing today 🤣

'and leggings worn with heeled or ankle boots.'

You see, I think good quality black leggings, and black ankle boots look nice. imo. An exception to the rule.

Edited

I agree. I've got some thick good quality leggings and that I wear with chunky ankle boots.

I don't think the thin leggings would look great.

The woollen crew neck jumper is nice - not that I can wear wool - but the rest is a no from me (partly because if I even think of wearing a pale colour I spill something down my front).

Don't take it so seriously. IRL everybody is worrying about the CoL and how to get a doctor's appointment, rather than my unpainted toenails, cardie and glasses.😁

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/03/2024 09:38

Yep.

I don’t really give a fuck what anyone thinks. I’m 60. Won’t wear manmade fibres. This means l may occasionally wear Seasalt. I don’t wear FF,or WS though.

Mostly wear Cos or Arket. If someone thinks I’m frumpy thats their problem. I don’t waste time thinking about it. Who cares?

I'm 70; I've worn glasses since I was 12; I'm still wearing skinny years and biker boots. If that's considered "frumpy", I don't give a fuck, either.

I feel like some things like leggings, skinny jeans and a decent pair of trainers are just wardrobe staples at this point. You can style them in so many ways.

Grapewrath · 05/03/2024 15:49

I think long flowy dresses with boots and a cardi. Anything joules/boden/seasalt. They all say frumpy to me.

PansyOatZebra · 05/03/2024 15:50

I think fat people generally look more frumpy in clothes than skinny people.

I say this as someone who is fat (used to not be) and I’ve suddenly really struggled to not look frumpy in my clothes.

Aw it’s nice that you admit it :) can you give examples of ‘non frumpy’ clothes?

Declining to describe my clothing to random weirdos online thanks.

Frumpy - dowdy and old fashioned, not caring about her appearance - Collins dictionary

Fashion changes but style endures - Chanel

As for the men, the Crosby Martin Sinatra song, ‘Style’ may entertain them

Frumpy to me is just not caring what you look like, in grubby skirt, down at
heel moccasins, hair an unwashed mess, clutching two edges of a cardigan around an unfettered bosom, unstitched hem hanging, generally ungroomed, undisciplined.

Confidence, good deportment, helps carry off your look/style whatever that is
I cannot wear Joules, White Stuff, Boden etc as everything is too short and boxy
on me as I am long bodied.
Scarves and bags from White Stuff feature in my wardrobe though, lovely colours, excellent quality, value and style (imho.)

Frumpy to me is given up, ‘couldn’t care Less’ look I can describe -
slouched, curved shoulders, by choice
ill fitting bra, old, worn, wrong size, makes for a shapeless body to begin with
unkempt hair, the badger look, parted in the middle straight and long tucked behind ears, badly dyed hair, matt black like a blackboard
too short skirts or trousers
grubby anorak - grubby anything
lace up flat shoes with American Tan tights
grubby scarf hanging, which is held onto with one firm grip
heavy shoulder bag, faux leather, over one shoulder with hand firmly
jammed across the top ( you will notice this now)
polyester trousers wih no pockets on the bum (which are slimming)
cream polyester bouse with high pocket/s so boobs, look even lower
cheap metal jewellery
clumpy shoes
waterfall cardigan misshapen
beige cardigan with missing buttons
box pleated skirt with bitty acrylic short sleeved jumper, fawn
sellotaped handle shopping bag she has had since Adam was a lad
anything she wears looks worn out, seen better days, old, tired
cheap denim look cotton elasticated waist thin trousers

apart from confidence, money, a bulging wardrobe, deportment, style etc,
the base line is good grooming, hair well cut, skincare, personal hygiene,
nails trimmed, pedicures.

I don’t believe any poster here qualifies as frumpy - differing styles yes,
especially now WFH to be comfortable and warm.

@SOxon

I think this list is really unpleasant as it says to me someone who is quite poor and literally can't afford anything but the cheapest clothing .

@Memyselfandtheothers oh no I'm actually wearing a mid length wrap dress today (not floral) cardigan and ballet flats!

I'd wear this too, OP. I think it depends on your figure and the fit of the clothes.

I agree, she might as well have said 'poor people smell and they're ugly'

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 05/03/2024 16:02

But she's the future Queen. No way would her Zara swan print dress (I had that!) or her sheer dress/skirt she wore at uni be considered passable now.

It isn’t either/or.
Few could wear or want to wear what they wore twenty years ago as a student.
Letizia IS the Queen and looks more exciting than Kate who has dressed in this boring way since she left uni.
Meghan is naturally more stylish imo and shows she cares about style through her clothes. Beatrice, Eugenie are very frumpy but their mother is a a lost cause when it comes to style so maybe it does run in families.

Apart from the royals (as they are public figures with all the money, time and help in the world) , I feel a bit off about the thread now as someone posted earlier about those stuck in poverty being frumpy. I know this is the least of their concerns but judgement being passed on people who have mental health issues or stuck in a poverty trap has taken the shine off this thread for me now.
