Feel like giving up with SPF under makeup

gwanmen · 29/02/2024 19:37

People say wear SPF every day but it makes my face so shiny and I end up trying to layer up makeup to mattify myself (which doesn't work anyway). It's raining all day every day how much sun damage am I really going to get? I'm from the generation that oiled up to sit on the beach with zero sun cream so it's all too little too late anyway right?
I have tried a few different ones but they are all shiny 😩

Have you tried powder ontop and then reapply during the day? I’m using the le roche posay dry touch (it’s not dry 🙄). I use the Givenchy libre powder over it but it needs to be powdered a few times to tone down the shine.

I feel your pain.

Midnlghtrain · 29/02/2024 19:49

Even when raining / cloudy the UV can be strong!

I love the garnier spray spf 50 or the Charlotte tilbury primer with spf 50 - I find they don't make me shiny 😊

Yorkshirelass21 · 29/02/2024 19:49

You can get a powder spf 50 that you put on top of your makeup. More expensive sunscreens will be less greasy.

kaiadeluded · 29/02/2024 19:52

Try la Roche posay oil control fluid it's not cheap £20

kaiadeluded · 29/02/2024 19:53

Spf50

MotherWol · 29/02/2024 20:02

Are you using retinols or acid toners in your routine? If you are then you should use SPF because they increase your risk of sun damage. If not, and if you’re indoors most of the time, you can probably skip SPF in the winter. You absolutely need it when the weather improves though!

coxesorangepippin · 29/02/2024 20:03

I think it's a beauty myth, another marketing ploy to make even more money

Let's face it, you don't need spf in the UK in March

Doppe · 29/02/2024 20:03

Try Paulas Choice super light daily wrinkle defence, spf 30. I use the (slightly) tinted version. It’s been a revelation for me! I have had crap skin my whole life and until using this I never left the house without makeup. It works well under my makeup too but with this I have been known to forgo foundation completely. It leaves a lovely finish (not too matte or too shiny) and feels light on the skin.

HappierTimesAhead · 29/02/2024 20:05

I second using Paula's Choice SPF products (and Paula's Choice products in general, game changer for my skin)

Cotswoldmama · 29/02/2024 20:10

I've been using this one recently, it has a slight shine but not greasy more dewu. I do use a thin layer of powder after but don't need to reapply

I've often wondered this.

And OP, feel your pain. I gave up a while back because of the same issue, so im watching with interest

Delatron · 29/02/2024 20:19

It’s not a myth but it depends what is important to you. UVB rays are the ones that burn you, UVA age you. UVA rays are present at the same level all year round. And penetrate clouds and glass. So if you’re concerned about ageing then you need SPF all year round..

If your only concern is burning then you’d wear spf in summer on a sunny day.

newnameagain1976 · 29/02/2024 20:21

Try supergoop Matt or a shine control one.

BiliousOhGod · 29/02/2024 20:22

It's not the SPF you need in the winter, it's the uva filter that comes with it.... UVA is the one which goes deep into the skin and causes aging / skin damage. The minimum protection is 30% of the uvb (SPF rating) to be considered "broad spectrum" so that's what you get in some creams. I.e. in SPF 50, it's just less than 17%. Mine is 95%. There are lots of over makeup aerosols, now, but they aren't cheap.

BiliousOhGod · 29/02/2024 20:23

Sorry - cross post with a PP.

Alwaystransforming · 29/02/2024 20:26

I use Korean ones. I have the isntree one at the moment. I use it in place of moisturiser so not buying an extra face cream. Dries down well. Great for under make up

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 29/02/2024 20:28

@BiliousOhGod which one do you use, please? 95% sounds great (if I’ve understood correctly!)

Nothingbuttheglory · 29/02/2024 20:37

Colorescience Face Shield Flex.

Comes in 4 shades, adapts to your skin tone when you put it in. Spf 50, broad spectrum UVA protection. Basically spf and foundation in one.

It goes on slightly shiny but a bit of powder fixes that.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 29/02/2024 20:47

I find it difficult to wear too. Mine is within a face moisturiser and wasn't that cheap.

If it gets anywhere near my eyes they sting and water all day. I don't put it on my eyes but putting makeup on afterwards unavoidably moves it around.

Why does it sting the eyes so much?

ThisGoldHedgehog · 29/02/2024 21:16

Just blot. All these solutions are rather complicated. When you get shiny, blot your face. Get blotting papers or use a single sheet of tissue. Then you can leave it (and be dewy) or lightly apply powder.

Soreteatowel · 29/02/2024 21:24

It's a nonsense. How can you possibly need SPF when it's raining in February and you're indoors most of the day anyway?

Keroppi · 29/02/2024 21:30

LRP invisible fluid
Biore
totally non greasy, most japanese and korean ones are the best. the biore one has alcohol in, doesn't seem to bother my sensitive skin but instead makes the formula evaporate fast and dry down. doesn't pill under makeup
i never bother with spf50 the formulations are always really heavy and spf30 is enough personally esp this time of year
put spf on in the morning so it has time to sink in too

gwanmen · 29/02/2024 21:39

Wow thanks so much for all the recommendations! I'm tempted by the LRP oil control..
yes I do use retinols and yes I do want to avoid aging so will need the UVA protection.
I used to use Biore a few years ago and it was good to be honest in terms of (un)shininess but then it came out that some Korean brands were putting whitening chemicals in their skincare and (as I couldn't read the packaging), I swerved it!
Really appreciate all the recommendations and I'm reassured to know I'm not the only one with this shiny problem. Not all of us want to 'glow'!

gwanmen · 29/02/2024 21:44

I tried Paula's choice BHA in the past for my sebaceous nose but didn't rate it.. not to badmouth the brand because it's very highly rated but it didn't suit my skin so I'm a bit reluctant to pay out for their SPF.
As a side note, at risk of derailing my own thread, I got a really cheap BHA toner from Aldi, similar packaging to Paula's choice..and it was brilliant! Have ran out now and haven't seen it since.

I wear a day moisturiser that has SPF in it, but tbh I live in one of the rainiest parts of the UK, atm I drive to work when it's barely light and leave when it's getting dark, and I don't leave the building in between. I spend almost all day in a room that doesn't get direct sunlight. I can't possibly need a separate SPF.
