Is a colour analysis worth it?

Hello, I’m considering having a colour analysis and wondered what people’s opinions were on it. If you’ve had one, have you found it useful?

OP posts:

Another stylemehappy customer here, really happy with my analysis from Emily and the info. Have received lots of compliments on my appearance since making an effort to wear my best colours.

I worked mine out myself utlising apps and watching TikToks, I also pulled the colours out of my skin, hair & eyes on Instagram, It takes a bit of work, but if you are obsessed (like me) you can DIY. Always thought I was a spring, but nope cool summer all the way, i have even changed my hair colour since finding out

IlonaRN · 27/02/2024 22:37

I had mine done with House of Colour 10 years ago, and I still think it was the best money I have ever spent on my appearance!

StoneTheCrone · 28/02/2024 00:50

Another Blue Spring here who went with House of Colour. Its worth it if you're a tricky border season/difficult to type. When i wear my best colours, i literally get people coming up to me and saying "wow - you look great!"

If you're a bright season though (Spring/Winter) you'll struggle to find clothes or makeup at the moment as everything's muted. I know there's Kettlewell but their styles are always off and stretch jersey isnt very flattering.

tobee · 28/02/2024 01:48

House of colour here too! Used it for a birthday present for myself last year. I'd been fiddling about looking at possibilities on the internet when bored in lockdown. I thought (hoped!) I was a winter. Turned out I am but am jewel winter which makes a lot of difference as I was wearing dark, low contrast clothes rather than high contrast. Lip colours were also a revelation.

I checked the reviews of stylists local to me and she was great. Friendly and professional. Took my dd to see her and she is vibrant autumn and looks fabulous in those colours.

Pickledprawn · 28/02/2024 06:44

I worked mine out myself through the Concept Wardrobe website and there is lots on Pinterest. Took me a while though maybe professionals can do it quicker. I have neutral skin that was difficult to figure out!

I’ve had mine done by Emily, pretty sure everyone in the same sub season gets the same report so it’s pretty cut and paste too- which is fine for the price imo

I've had mine done by her as well and have noted from snippets of the facebook group that she does seem to give individual 'best colours' and 'colours to avoid' as people with the same sub season as me have different colours noted as their best.

OP I found it very useful as I tried to figure it out myself and couldn't tell because contradicting colours seemed to suit me. It's made me realise that some colours make me look a bit yellow even though I like them and why I look good in black but not all black. I've branched out into some new brighter colours which I'm enjoying. It's been a fun experience.

This is a really great and detailed website, I recommend anyone who has had an analysis from one of the online places like style me happy use this alongside for a more detailed explanation.

It's fascinating. From it.

Have you ever heard someone tell you that your outfit looks nice? [Yes, frequently]

Wouldn't you rather hear how you look nice? [no, other than from my husband I don't want personal comments like that and I wouldn't make personal comments like that]

Buying a bunch of clothes because they look nice in the shop is not a good strategy for building a wardrobe. It implies that the look of your clothes is more important than your look. But clothes should have no other purpose than to bring out your natural beauty and to highlight it.

Disagree with all of that. It's fascinating, but I don't relate to it.

happyshineyperson · 28/02/2024 19:23

That’s such a good point @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle and probably explains why, though I have had the colour analysis, I find it frustrating when shopping. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who actually likes shopping and clothes. It’s good to know what my best colours are for occasion clothes (like a wedding guest dress) but it feels limiting when I am browsing and like something but it’s the “wrong” colour. It’s like there is a voice in the back of my head saying “but it’s black”. Sometimes it’s nice to look fashionable/stylish rather than your best.

DanceMumTaxi · 28/02/2024 20:22

@StoneTheCrone you’re so right. I’m a bright winter and really struggling. Everything is too muted or too warm.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2024 20:35

I often find spring and autumn difficult times to buy clothes in bright colours.

On threads about how to look groomed or "expensive" someone always suggets a camel coat. No, it is a shit colour for us winters.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2024 20:45

The whole point of colour analysis is that you look good. If people only notice what you are wearing you are wearing the wrong colours.

LuckyCharmz · 28/02/2024 21:15

Another yes here, house of colour. Did the style too at a later date, that made the world of difference.

DanceMumTaxi · 28/02/2024 21:15

@RampantIvy I hear you with the camel coat 🙌 It makes me look ill.

NeurodivergentBurnout · 28/02/2024 22:03

I had a chronic health problem when I had my colours done. I was on loads of meds and felt rough! My consultant said to start with something small and inexpensive so I bought a scarf. I’m an Autumn and I went for mustard. I would never have picked mustard before. When I started wearing it, loads of people said ‘You look well!’. Ironic really 😆 I wasn’t! But clearly the mustard made me look better.

I would never say to anyone "you look good". I would compliment the outfit.

And to be honest if someone is wearing a dress or a coat or jacket which I like the look of, that's what I notice. It's always the item of clothing. If someone is wearing an item of clothing I don't like, that's what I'd notice too. I honestly never notice this colour effect, either on myself or anyone else. It's fascinating reading about it.

Again, that's interesting. I would never see that. A camel Max Mara coat is just a fabulous garment. I wouldn't notice anything more than that. For me it couldn't make anyone look bad.

Floisme · 28/02/2024 22:15

A colour analyst once tried to sell her service by telling me, 'It'll take all the thinking out of getting dressed.'

I said, 'But I like thinking about getting dressed.'

End of conversation.

NellyCortado · 28/02/2024 22:37

I'm really tempted to try this. Any recommendations in SW London please?

OMGitsnotgood · 28/02/2024 22:55

I had mine done several decades ago, seemed an awful lot of money but my goodness has it been worth it. Main reasons: I look bette in 'my' colours so am happier to wear outfits over again & I don't impulse buy colours that don't suit me. shopping is much quicker - scan the rails for my collies or filter by my colours online, I've been braver about trying the more unusual colours in my palette.
I find it difficult sometimes to buy my colours (autumn)in spring/summer, so really keep an active eye out for them and stick up when they are in.

A tip: I'd just bought a jacket in a colour that it turned out I shouldn't be wearing. The consultant said just wear a blouse or scarf in your colours with it - made a huge difference, No need to rush out and buy a whole new wardrobe, just adapt what you have already in the 'transition' period.

Pistachiovillian · 01/05/2024 12:54

I had mine done through Style me Happy.

I am not sure to be honest. She was definitely right in what colours suit me, everything said made sense however I like bright, funky clothes in colours like hot pink, and 'out there' prints.
She said I was a 'muted summer' and should go for very neutral, pale colours. I just cannot do it 😅I'd not feel like me at all!
On the plus side, she's very reasonably priced as well as highly recommended so I don't feel like I've wasted any money. I still use her guide for things such as meetings/job interviews sometimes .

YukNo · 01/05/2024 12:57

I can never tell the difference when you see those videos where a lady sits in a chair while another lady with jangly bracelets drapes various scarves over her, intoning “warm. Cool. Warm. Cool”

The lady in the chair looks exactly the same throughout to me.

Daraghia · 01/05/2024 13:00

I had a colour analysis recently with Clare Watkins, you'll find her on instagram. It's been a game changer for me. Clare is a personal shopper and stylist too but does the analysis at her home in Altrincham. I believe she's fully booked till next year.
