morning everyone can you please give me some suggestions, i have spent the last 2 months collecting used spray fragrances from family and friends and then selling it on to other friends and family. The fragrances were all given to me as it was unwanted but was amazed how quickly others were happy to buy at a fraction of the price

i am thinking of starting a website i am just not sure if my family and friends bought the used fragrances due to sympathy as i needed money.
i earned £110 which was amazing. i found 3 sprays i had alone in a cupboard which i forgot about

Hi @sami8888 I have seen plenty of part used fragrances on ebay -I nearly bought one myself earlier this week, but I'm not sure if it breaches their official rules or not. Why not list a couple and see? You could also try selling on FB marketplace locally too with pick up from your home. I guess the only thing to be sure of is that they haven't gone off -otherwise you might have unhappy buyers! Good luck with your new venture 😊

thankyou helen, i am sure its not legal as these companies did allow it , i think its a common problem for lots of people. From a enviromental point of view its a positive i am sure and its helps with some extra money

I’m not sure it’s a business model that you can scale up beyond friends and family.
I might buy a used perfume off a friend, but wouldn’t off a website, it could be anything.

sami8888 · 26/02/2024 08:39

thankyou i was looking at it from the way Vinted does it, we buy used clothes so i was thinking why not fragrances. You are very right trust is important. I think if someone sold something fake like amazon or ebay they would get a bad review straightway and get removed. There will always be those sort nasty people in every business i guess but i do agree with you that trust is very important

Sorry, I can’t see it working. You’d have to buy the fragrance, be able to determine accurately that it isn’t fake and upload clear photos and descriptions to your site.

Unless the fragrance are really high end, costing £100’s of pounds each I don’t think it’s a workable business plan.

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 26/02/2024 08:42

I would check but I think the issue is posting liquids which royal mail may have banned. Have a look at guidelines. Years ago I sold a used unwanted perfume and was pleasantly pleased to get most of the rrp (only had a few sprays gone from it).

Candleabra · 26/02/2024 08:43

It’s not second hand stuff id have a problem with. The difference is I can wash second hand clothes.
You’d have to do more research to get a wider set of views. It’s just that, for me, used perfume would be too personal an item to get from a stranger.

Revelatio · 26/02/2024 08:43

Use local FB or WhatsApp groups, people can then collect from you. I think it’s fine to post liquids, I’ve never seen a restriction. Just sell on vinted, plenty of people do.

Quick Google:: Can't post perfume in Royal Mail, might be different with couriers?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 26/02/2024 08:45

Where are you going to get your stock of partly used but unwanted perfume? You've been round your family and friends once- do they make a habit of buying perfume they don't like?

Couriers deliver perfume as it's not a problem buying perfume online but OP presumably would have to set up a business account with a courier company.

sami8888 · 26/02/2024 08:49

Hi sorry i think i gave the wrong impression, i was not intending to buy them and then sell it on. Instead i was going to let someone advertise the fragrance and let others bid for the used fragrance like they do on Vinted. If you had a fragrance that cost £40 and you used a quarter of it and didnt enjoy it , someone else might bid £7 for it. I am not sure why i had such a positive response from my family and friends it did feel good doing it as i love my fragrances

This, exactly.

SiobhanSharpe · 26/02/2024 08:57

You can sometimes get hold of high end 'vintage' perfumes, new condition or part used, in charity shops and you can sell these on ebay. There's a ready market for these as perfume houses change the formulations of their products regularly and many people prefer a previous version.
I'm a perfume collector and have sold both used and unused bottles. Older (vintage) perfumes sell very well indeed IME.
Even some older Body Shop and Avon fragrances which have now been discontinued sell very well.
I don't use Royal Mail when dispatching them, there are other options offered on eBay itself. I always take great care with packaging.

So you’re intending to act as a broker? How would this work on an existing sales platform?

Verite1 · 26/02/2024 09:09

I think the difference between selling clothes and perfumes is that fake clothes can’t harm someone. Fake perfumes could have anything in them - including dangerous substances.

GanninHyem · 26/02/2024 09:10

There is a very good reason resale sites do not allow this. Even the briefest scan of eBay's cosmetics policy will give you an insight into why that is. You already sound drunk tbh.

You can post perfume by Royal Mail, just not internationally, but there are restrictions:
◦ Volume per item must not exceed 150ml.
◦ No more than four items in any one parcel.
◦ Must be sent in its original retail packaging, placed in strong outer packaging and cushioned to prevent breakage.
◦ An ID8000 label must be applied (see example ID8000 labell_).

First thing I thought of was that innocent looking perfume sample in Salisbury that turned out to be Novichok 🤦🏻‍♀️
