morning everyone can you please give me some suggestions, i have spent the last 2 months collecting used spray fragrances from family and friends and then selling it on to other friends and family. The fragrances were all given to me as it was unwanted but was amazed how quickly others were happy to buy at a fraction of the price

I wouldn’t buy part used fragrances. How would I know when it was bought or opened? They have a shelf life so wouldn’t trust it would still be of decent quality

Use local FB or WhatsApp groups, people can then collect from you. I think it’s fine to post liquids, I’ve never seen a restriction. Just sell on vinted, plenty of people do.

Vinted dont let you and will close your account if you do it after a warning
They dont even let unused ones without boxes be sold- which is how some are sold

If they are unusual people decent into mini sample bottles and sell on both eBay and Vinted
Ebay let you sell used perfume

Perfumes have an expiry date/shelf life, usually about 2 years once opened, and 3-5 years unopened (depending on storage conditions & formulation). After this time, the perfume oil typically dissipates, leaving behind slightly fragranced alcohol but not to the standard you’d have expected from the original perfume.

Hi sorry i think i gave the wrong impression, i was not intending to buy them and then sell it on. Instead i was going to let someone advertise the fragrance and let others bid for the used fragrance like they do on Vinted. If you had a fragrance that cost £40 and you used a quarter of it and didnt enjoy it , someone else might bid £7 for it. I am not sure why i had such a positive response from my family and friends it did feel good doing it as i love my fragrances

So you want to set up a perfume specific version of Vinted?

There would be a lot to consider and even once it gets big I don’t think they turn over a massive profit.

What you’re suggesting is completely different to what your opening post is about

Sparkletastic · 26/02/2024 11:06

Will you have to pay someone to build the website or can you do that yourself?

Charlieradioalphapapa · 26/02/2024 11:09

I’ve sold perfumes I’ve bought and decided I don’t like or have got fed up of, on eBay. No problem with posting as long as you tell them and they put a chemical sticker on. The only brands I’ve sold are Jo Malone and Penhaligans and I got a good price. I always store perfume in the box and in the coolest place in summer and wouldn’t sell something I didn’t know was genuine and useable. Could you rely on everything being genuine?

MsMcGonagall · 26/02/2024 11:15

There's too many potential risks in setting up a broker site - you cannot possibly trust all the people selling used fragrances to be selling in date and true and safe perfume.

Plus you'd need massive investment to develop and run a site like Vinted.

You could maybe do your personal "I know and trust everyone involved" version as an annual event (or every 2 years?), say post-Christmas when maybe people got gifts that weren't quite their taste?

Sell on Vinted, loads on there part used.

Sell on Vinted, loads on there part used.

They dont allow it.
If you get a listing taken down and breach again they deleted your account
Vinted is very black and white- no appeal unlike eBay

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 26/02/2024 14:56

It's a very strange business idea, I can't imagine many people would want an open fragrance.

Petrine · 26/02/2024 15:48

people absolutely do buy part used fragrance. You’d be surprised at the price of vintage fragrance. They’re extremely sought after and priced far above what they would have retailed new.

It’s the scarcity factor and getting a vintage bottle of a beautiful fragrance before recent reformulations changed it somewhat.

Perfumes stored properly will last many, many years

Strangeness · 26/02/2024 16:10

Some you can get away with selling, and you’re right that there’s a huge market for it.
I recently saw a lot of extremely expensive very old half full bottles of Shalimar, Chanel etc in an antiques shop . When I went back for the Shalimar, it had been sold almost immediately.
However, expect listings on eBay to be taken down very quickly . I was threatened with legal action for trying to sell some bottles of Serge Lutens on eBay . Not by eBay but by the umbrella company that makes Serge Luten (can’t remember quite who).
You don’t know exactly what’s in old perfume bottles so legally you’d be on very precarious ground if someone was to get chemical burns or something horrible.

EBay doesn't allow the sale of decanted perfume. They allow the sale of new perfumes in original packaging. It's unclear if that means unsealed.

I've sold loads of partial bottles on eBay.
There's absolutely no issue as long as you know how to list them. Perfume survives for many years & vintage perfumes are highly sought after. Modern perfumes have often been tamed & don't smell half as good as the original vintages

Charlieradioalphapapa · 26/02/2024 19:26

We generally allow the sale of most new perfume and cosmetics on eBay, with some exceptions, but testers, smell-alike perfume, decanters, and dramming bottles are not allowed.

Ive bought and sold about 5 used perfumes. One or two were boxed but not sealed. Some weren’t boxed but in original bottles with barcodes under . I only buy off individuals with 100%seller feedback, photos that clearly show how much is left, and not from people with loads of bottles of various makes. I have been lucky that I’ve not had a dud and buyers are lucky when they’ve bought mine as I’d not sell anything that I hadn’t bought myself from a genuine shop/online company like AllBeauty etc. And I always store perfume away from heat and light.

JaceLancs · 26/02/2024 21:07

I have never had an issue selling perfume on eBay it’s usually been an unwanted gift or a purchase made in error - one spray and then sold in original packaging

Branster · 27/02/2024 05:45

It is very risky.
First problem is sourcing enough product to sell for profit on a regular basis.
Even if you do sell the fragrance, there's a high chance the buyer might claim it was not a genuine product. Because they can. And you can't prove otherwise. So you'd need to refund the buyer.
Used fragrance sells very well on eBay and I sold about half a dozen bottles over the years from unwanted gifts after I opened the bottles. I was very surprised they sold that well. I don't know what the current eBay policy is now but Vinted to not allow the sale of used fragrance/skincare etc.
