Help me find a perfume?

I'm looking for a new perfume. My reason for not posting on the big perfume thread is that they are very knowledgeable, whereas I don't know what I am talking about Confused.

As I am allergic to fish and shellfish I steer towards vegetarian perfumes, it's not a principled stance. Some of the ingredients in high street perfumes give me a migraine, I like Chanel Coco, sadly it induces a migraine.

I don't like the smell of magnolia, I don't think I like honeysuckle and jasmine can smell meh when it is blended with certain other fragrances. I like fruit fragrances individually, I'm not looking for a fruit punch smell, I particularly like pear, fig, peach, orange and others.
I don't like the smell of oud/aoud.

My favourite perfume ever was Aveda's Shampure when it was sold as a perfume oil. The EDT version is not even close.

I'd like an EDP. Florals I would especially like a perfume centered around Ylang Ylang, something spicy, musky and sensual. Heady without being headachey.

Also I like rose, particularly old English rose or Turkish rose, lavender, frangipani, violet, sweet pea. I could go on naming flowers I like. In particular I prefer a blend of complimentary floral fragrances, around a central fragrance, preferably Ylang Ylang.

Recently I have noticed a move towards overwhelming amber and vanilla fragrances. Everything seems to be amber or vanilla!
I like them both as part of a blend. If I only wanted one or another I would buy them as an individual fragrance, or one with few added notes.

Years ago I liked Obsession, Samsara, Poison and others, th

Off the top of my head I can't think
I'm not sure what else I should mention.
Please ask if I need to clarify.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

I can't work how to edit my post on my phone.

It should say:

Years ago I liked Obsession, Samsara, Poison and others, I think they have changed the formulation now they smell horrible on me..

If you go on fragnatica website you can search by ingredient.
My favourite is Noa by Cacharel, it has ylan ylang in it. Maybe try that?
This is what Noa’s scent composition it looks like.
Hope this helps.

I only use vegan, cruelty free perfumes and I love Eden perfumes. They offer good copies of favourites and their own too.
You can look at the 'notes' in each perfume and work out what is the ingredient you like.

I'm not sure of the vegetarian/vegan credentials but I highly recommend Chloe - Nomade

It's not sickly at all and to me it smells unique. I love it for summer in particular.

Not sure of notes off the top of my head but look it up on fragrantica and see what you think! I wasn't sure at first spray but then became addicted.

Loubelle70 · 25/02/2024 08:56

l'interdit rouge ultime.
I love it.

EvelynBeatrice · 25/02/2024 08:57

Floral Street are vegan. They do small sample packs.
When feeling I need something simple or when I'm feeling under par, I go for Rituals l'eclat. Might not suit you though as it's light woody pencil shavings rather than floral.
Nuxe ( often available in Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and independent chemists) often do light floral fragrances in the summer. Last year I enjoyed their Neroli one.
French company Roger & Gallet often found at little pharmacies, do some lovely non headache inducing ones - Fleurs de figier and Bois d'orange are very nice.
Finally, light inoffensive fragrances include the Philosophy Grace range. range.

HolyMoly24 · 25/02/2024 09:06

@EvelynBeatrice light woody pencil shavings you say? I need this perfume immediately 😍

Yes L'Eclat is lovely. Slightly reminiscent of the old Fidgi by Guy Laroche. Even better, you can buy a mini bottle for 15-18 pounds to try out. Not much longetivity, but I still like it.

Workingmytickettoparadise · 25/02/2024 09:16

John Lewis have a new service, for want of a better word, where they will give you a certain number of samples when you purchase a £50 perfume voucher to spend on the one you like. It might be worth checking out of you have a branch near you OP and appeals.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/02/2024 09:16

Perhaps Tresor or a vegan dupe - Blossom perfumery do great dupes

PerfumeToLove · 25/02/2024 09:48

@hanka thank you, I have tried Fragrantica.
It can tell me the main ingredients in a perfume, it can't tell me whether it has that sharp, metallic smell.
As it happens I know that I don't like Noa, to me it smells like Dive, to each their own.

My neighbour (!) suggested Eden perfumes to me. @Pennyplant19 have you tried Aphrodite's Love Oil? That's the one I'm looking at. Is that the right shop?

@HolyMoly24 and @Loubelle70 I'll give them a go, though I wonder whether I might have the same chemical sensitivity.

In case you're all thinking I'm a right weirdo, in addition to the allergies, I had a traumatic brain injury some time back. Since then my smell has been hyper sensitive. Even though I am a weirdo, there is a good reason for it Smile. I'm sure your perfumes smell lovely on you. I'm no chemist, my best guess is that it's the preservatives that mess with my sense of smell.

There are some mass-produced perfumes that I am ok with. I haven't tried all of their scents by any means, though I have tried Ellis Brooklyn, Tom Ford and Le Labo to name a few.

@EvelynBeatrice I have tried Floral Street, they smell good at first but they don't last.
I'll try Rituals, thank you.
Like Nuxe rose, I have only tried their body oils.
Like the one Roger & Gallet I have tried.
How strong are the Philosophy fragrances?

OP posts:
hanka · 25/02/2024 10:03

Fair enough 😁
(what’s a dive?)

I think in the end you’ll have to try many just to find what doesn’t mess with your body. Easier said than done I’m sure.
Worth a try going to places like Holland and Barrett and trying stuff they’ve got there? Or some independent pharmacies might stock unusual perfumes.
Are you in the UK op?
I sometimes go to local markets and fairs and find a ‘parfum club’ type of a stall to try out things.
Good luck!

hanka · 25/02/2024 10:05

I’ve got Philosophy Amazing Grace. Nice&powdery.
Well, had.
But now I use their body lotion instead of the perfume, more subtle but does the job.

I think Aphrodites love oil is a different company - Eden Botanicals?
I'm very sensitive to smell as well, some perfumes give me migraines, I've never had a problem with any of my Eden Perfumes x

PerfumeToLove · 25/02/2024 10:34

@Sufac the purple fig looks great, thank you.

Now that is a good idea @Workingmytickettoparadise we are going to JL in a few weeks.

I've been wondering about Bloom @Twoshoesnewshoes it's knowing where to start! Do they last well?

Oh no, sorry @hanka Grin I didn't sleep last night, I'm trying to stay awake. I have no idea why I typed Dive, it should have said sharp. That's how things can smell now; sharp 😂.
I'm in the UK, yes. In the past I have made my own perfumes - and they are alright. No, really 😁. Since the whole weird smell thing I have learned about essential oils in a big way. I'd definitely pick them up from market stalls or local sellers. I'll give it a Google and see whether, aside from local markets, there are any niche perfume shops.
I've tried Amazing Grace shower gel and the Ballet one too, it didn't occur to me to try the perfume. I'll take a look...

I haven't tried it but this seemed like something you would enjoy

This is a vegan brand that might be worth a browse

WhereAreWeNow · 25/02/2024 11:52

Diptyque do a good fig scent.
Paul Smith Rose is a lovely pure rose scent.
Have you tried the Clarins fragrances. Eau Extraordinaire might be up your street. They don't last for ages but they smell lovely - essential oils rather than a synthetic/chemical smell.
Sorry, I'm not sure if they're vegetarian. I'm vegetarian and I'm embarrassed to say it's never occurred to me that perfume might not be!

PerfumeToLove · 26/02/2024 04:54

Thank you @PawsisShady, I have heard about Bon Parfumeur, I wonder about their quality?
I'm definitely going to order from the Scottish company, they look interesting.

@WhereAreWeNow as I say, it doesn't have to be vegetarian, only no marine anything. I'll try Paul Smith. I find that Diptyque fragrances don't last on me. I have tried Clarins and they didn't smell on me at all.

It's weird, fragrances - whether I like them or not - are either very strong, or I they don't smell, not even a little, from the first spray. It's not only me; no-one can smell them on me either.

AntonFeckoff · 26/02/2024 13:07

I like Hermes Eau des Merveilles for spicy and sensual https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Hermes/Eau-des-Merveilles-9.html it's the only perfume I wear these days. Not sure if it's vegetarian.

AntonFeckoff · 26/02/2024 13:08

I love the red Clarins.. dynamisante? But like you, it doesn't last on me unfortunately.

Definitelynotme2022 · 26/02/2024 13:15

There are so many perfumes I can't wear, due to the smell triggering migraines. Even on other people when I'm out shopping.

My go to perfume in Giorgio Armani Si. I love it, and it's not triggering for me!

A recent discovery is the Floral Street range. I have a couple now (cheaper than the Si!) and they're not triggering for me either.

As a fellow migraine sufferer obviously what doesn't trigger me, may trigger you. It's so difficult!!
