Mulberry bags....thoughts please

I have been coveting the Loewe Puzzle bag for some time now but I have decided I simply cannot and never will be able to justify the £2,400 price tag.

I have recently been looking at the Mulberry Billie, in chalk, I know it is not similar but it does look like a really nice bag and it is a third of the price tag and is the size and idea of the kind of bag I want.

I can't put my finger on it though but there is something I am just not sure about with Mulberry....will this last the test of time?

The reviews on the John Lewis website are saying that the handle is held on by a magnetic padlock and that it comes undone so the bag falls off. I would look for something else tbh.
I feel your dilemma though as I’m talking myself out of an expensive bag purchase too. I’m thinking I could buy jewellery that would keep it’s value better, but I still keep thinking about the bag.

Sadly jewellery doesn't keep its value either.

There is a huge mark up when new and them it's pretty much worth scrap price. Obviously there are some exceptions but those are few and far between.

I have a 2013 oak printed Bayswater which was about £600 and my dream bag at the time. It's aged beautifully - not very practical, and heavy, but still. 11 years (and a a better household income) later though I would love a Puzzle. I think it's ok to have favourites at different price points, but I don't think this one is yours.

Saschka · 22/02/2024 20:14

Get the Loewe! Look on Vestiaire or somewhere for a secondhand one, I saw some on there for about £1500.

That specific Mulberry is full as ditchwater. I like the Alexa, the Lily and the Bayswater but that one just isn’t very interesting.

Ohyay · 22/02/2024 20:24

Do you have Instagram? Berkley Boutique buy and sell preloved. They have new drops tomorrow. Including a puzzle £1450

DancingLikeARobotFrom1984 · 22/02/2024 20:34

Nah, save for the bag you really want.

Mulberry bags are nice enough but a bit 😴 (to me - I know lots of people love them)

laclochette · 22/02/2024 20:46

Mulberry quality is much worse than it used to be. If you love the Puzzle, save up for it! Although I see them everywhere now, wonder if they are getting a bit "done". If you still want it by the time you've saved up then you have your answer!

LightDrizzle · 22/02/2024 20:56

I have a Mulberry, not sure what it’s called. I don’t use it often but it’s out now and it is a bit heavy for the size. I’m thinking if trying to sell it and put it towards a Loewe Paseo medium shoulder bag in Oak.

Mulberry bags....thoughts please

Mulberry used to be lovely back in the day. Good quality and made in the UK. Sadly not any more! They started making them in China and Turkey with cheaper materials and put the price up too. They lost a LOT of customers and the brand has lost a lot of its good reputation. They’re just high street tat now, I wouldn’t spend my money on them, and I wouldn’t envy anyone who was carrying one. There are much nicer brands available for the same price. You might like Strathberry, at least they’re made in the EU.

SaturdayGiraffe · 22/02/2024 21:14

I thought Mulberry had a big factory in Somerset, I remember Prince William being photographed there. Did they close it?

Anyway, have you tried the Puzzle on in store? Maybe a mini would work, they start at 1700.

CJCreggsGoldfish · 22/02/2024 21:27

You can’t compare the bags. I have some Mulberry bags (the older ones are so much better quality but heavy) and I bought the much coveted Puzzle last year. It really is a thing of beauty and not comparable with a Mulberry. The Puzzle mini is surprisingly roomy so definitely worth a look. I will say though that there are 2 types of Puzzles - the original and the newer Edge…get the original if you can so it may be worth you looking at resale ones.

I absolutely love Mulberry bags, I have a pink Lily, black small Alexa, large grey Bayswater, black hobo bag (forget the name) and most recently a mini Antony in the most gorgeous baby blue colour. All used regularly and definitely have stood the test of time.

The hobo bag I’ve had since 2013 and used it for work almost every day (except since Covid when WFH). Absolutely no wear and tear at all except some teeny scratches on the logo plate

An Effie hobo? I love mine and have also used it almost every day.

Franticbutterfly · 22/02/2024 21:38

Save for the one you want. Nothing else will come close.

Ireolu · 22/02/2024 21:41

Between the Billie and puzzle I would suggest the puzzle. The mulberry bag does not look like an 800+ handbag. It's very uninspiring. The loewe is very expensive too but it's more interesting. Could you get away with a smaller sized puzzle? These are cheaper and would do me capacity wise for day to day but I don't carry much.

Anjo2011 · 22/02/2024 21:50

I would wait and get what I really want. Löewe made in Spain, gorgeous leather and hand stitched. Mulberry used to be great quality but not any more and the prices are crazy. Very possible you will end up with a bag made in Turkey or China. Pre loved a good option if you can find something in great condition, otherwise save a bit longer and go to a store where you can select what you want.

Haver74 · 22/02/2024 21:56

Not really that relevant, but I think Mulberry bags are now all made in the UK again.

SpindarellaRockafella · 22/02/2024 22:37

I have several mulberrys and I enjoy them. Most of them purchased like new but secondhand from various groups.

BUT that doesn’t answer your dilemma - save for the bag you really want and others have said look out for a preloved one.

in the meantime if you want a cheaper option then fairfax and favor have just launched a range of stuff in this colour. If you look after it you could easily sell it on when it’s time to get your puzzle bag.

Isabelle70 · 22/02/2024 22:42

I have a few Mulberry bags and say save for the Loewe bag you really want. Otherwise it's an expensive mistake you end up buying twice.
Do they go on sale? A bit of tax free shopping elsewhere?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 22/02/2024 22:52

I like some Mulberrys, like the original Alexa, but the one in the OP is utterly meh.

Get the bag you want, or get a Uniqlo cheapie and save up. Don't waste your money on something so mediocre.

With respect, this is absolute nonsense. Seriously 'high street tat' 😂 I've read some garbage on here, but this really is something else!

MrsKeats · 22/02/2024 14:23

There were some good value Loewe bags at Bicester Village.
Not the puzzle though which is my fav too.
Not a Mulberry fan. Would rather have a demellier bag.

So you piqued my curiosity, DeMellier? I’ve only gone bought the Large NY Tote
Thank you for the suggestion

Haver74 · 22/02/2024 21:56

Not really that relevant, but I think Mulberry bags are now all made in the UK again.

Their website says they make half of them in the UK nowadays. Shows how they ruined their brand when several of us thought they were still made in third world countries. Unfortunately they still manufacture a lot of their bags in Turkey, China and Vietnam. That alone justifies calling them “high street tat”. Who on earth wants a bag that was made in China?

tentonine · 23/02/2024 00:27

What is the attraction to this bag OP? (Seems strange, just saying)

Just finally found it online, it’s a Daria!
