What is the point of a trench coat?

I don't get it!
They don't seem warm and cosy and there is no hood!

They are to drape elegantly over your shoulders and LBD to better allow you to wave your lighter in the air while directly in front of the stage at an Ultravox gig in 1980.

Also to flap enchantingly as you walk to the night bus afterwards.

Mine was, anyway.
