What is the point of a trench coat?

I don't get it!
They don't seem warm and cosy and there is no hood!

I commute by public transport. I wear mine on days where it’s not cold but it might rain and it’s not appropriate to wear an anorak eg I am going to a smart client meeting. Not all coats need to be warm and cosy as anyone has taken the central line will attest!

DGPP · 21/02/2024 15:08

Absolutely love mine, I have them in black and navy. I wear them in spring and autumn. pretty obvious really!

yeahiknoww · 21/02/2024 15:13

The belt has always bothered me.

There is always a buckle, to buckle it up neatly.

But no one does. Not even the models modelling them for sale. They always just tie the two ends together in a loose sloppy knot.

I love mine, it's my office coat; perfect over trousers and a lightweight jumper. Always looks smart, I don't overheat, easy to have layers underneath. I don't really want to wear an outdoorsy/hiking jacket if I'm in the city, and I don't want to turn up at a meeting with a playground coat over my formalwear. If it's rainy I wear a hat or have an umbrella. Trenches are awesome.

Divebar2021 · 21/02/2024 15:14

Some of the fashion ones are not waterproof which I find irritating. I think they’re more stylish than most hooded coats you see but you can actually buy waterproof hoods that you can carry separately and wear with any coat.

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2024 15:18

I love mine. I am tall with broad shoulders so had to get one without the shoulder flap thing so I don't look mannish.

I have a long beige one, and two mid-length ones in navy and pale pink.

I wear them to work because they make me feel smart and put together.

PiIIock · 21/02/2024 15:26

You west this kind of coat with a natural-fibre jumper and leather clothes.

I wear a wool coat, so not trench. But I don't feel cold. If it's chilly, I put layers under it.

PiIIock · 21/02/2024 15:27

Oh fgs, that's leather gloves😑

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 21/02/2024 15:32

I think they look smart on other people, but I look like a washed out sack of potatoes in them. The usual colours they come in (beige, camel, navy, black etc) don’t suit me and I’m short and chubby. The ones without a hood would be useless as my hair frizzes like crazy if it gets wet. I look and feel much better in other coats and jackets.

BobnLen · 21/02/2024 16:08

I'm not sure but the belts are always irritating, never look quite right and often come adrift

dustcollective · 21/02/2024 16:23

I've got one from Mango which I really like wearing to elevate a casual outfit which would otherwise make me look shabby / like I'd not bothered (and I actually haven't)! Eg wearing over leggings & hoodie or jeans, sneakers and a plain sweater.

Whilst I have a smart warm wool camel coat (which serves a similar function in terms of style) I found in recent years I've barely worn it due to lack of cold winters, rising temperatures / climate change / perimenopause

CeeceeBloomingdale · 21/02/2024 17:38

I love them, I've got at least 5, they are perfect midseason coats and always smarten up an outfit.

Styleseeker · 21/02/2024 17:42

@pokebowls ah, I see. Public transport to me means having to walk 15-20 minutes after you get off the bus/train, often in the wind and rain - we aren't blessed with convenient transport networks where I am and so can't enjoy the swish of a stylish trench coat!

MidnightMeltdown · 21/02/2024 17:47

They aren't supposed to be warm and cosy, they are for spring/summer.

They are useful if you need a smart office coat

powerfullymoving · 21/02/2024 11:23

But that is what I don't get

How does it keep the rain off if you head / hair is exposed? I don't see people usually wearing them with a hat

If I need to wear an umbrella to protect my hair then I can wear any other coat?

Maybe I'm just obsessed with not getting my hair wet

A hood messes up your hair and it is casual. A trench coat is more stylish. You would use an umbrella. An umbrella doesn't stop your coat getting wet all the way down.

Daisy62 · 21/02/2024 18:23

I like mine, it looks stylish for a city/public transport day/evening. I wear a thin down packable jacket underneath if it's cold (that can go in my bag if I then get too hot). Mine is more olive than beige, beige makes me look washed out.

Newestname002 · 21/02/2024 18:26

I used to have a beautiful one, many years ago. Navy blue and good length and thickness, with a quilted liner which buttoned in, for the chillier days. Loved that coat, but it was ruined by the dry cleaners.. 🌹

DontForgetWhereYouCameFrom · 21/02/2024 18:27

I wore one today (to the office) and when I went out for my sandwich at lunch someone stopped me in the street so say they loved it and I looked absolutely fabulous! 😍

It's a raspberry coloured Ted Baker one I bought in a charity shop. I love it - makes me feel dressed up and adds colour to black/grey/navy office wear.

Cagney out of Cagney and Lacey looked good in one.

God I miss that programme! And yes she did.

Trenchcoats must be a southern thing - they are utterly pointless in Scotland. In general, if it is raining it is too cold for a trenchcoat to be any use. And what is the point of a waterproof coat that doesn't have a hood? Don't say umbrella - again, in Scotland, if it is raining it is likely to be too windy for a brolly. There would be about 2 days in summer when the not warm raincoat with brolly combo made any sense.

I'm in Scotland. I have different coats for different purposes, including 2 bonded cotton Mackintoshes - as in the coats made by Mackintosh ever since Charles Mackintosh (a Scotsman) invented his eponymous bonded cotton fabric in 1824. Up until about a year ago they were made in Cumbernauld. I think the factory is now in England. I have the Kintore and a straight, non belted one in navy. I'm wearing the Kintore today. I wear both of them a lot.

I love my trench coat, I mostly wear it in spring and autumn when it’s not raining. I do also have one with a hood.

I've got one. My husband yells 'go go gadget arms' whenever I wear it. Which consequently isn't often.

That is exactly the sort of thing my DH would say 😡🤣

Actually LOL!!! 😂

TheSameClip · 21/02/2024 19:03

I’ve tried and tried to make them work over the years but they just are t made for big tits

ballroompink · 21/02/2024 19:32

I wear mine on the days I go to the office (quite formal, central London) as a big coat is too hot for the train/Tube and popping out to get lunch. My Seasalt raincoat is what I wear for the school run or to go to the supermarket on a WFH day but doesn't feel smart enough for work.
