Tall plus sized very 🍏 shaped and nearly 60

ToothFairy2023 · 18/02/2024 09:16

Please be kind nearly 60, tall plus sized firm 🍏 shape absolutely no waist (so the unstructured shape/cut of these dresses does kind of work), I also
often over heat so need natural fabrics. I did want something smarter but wanted something I can wear again. The brightly coloured one is more me so think I would wear it quite a lot casually in spring summer. The lilac one is less me but could maybe wear it for work. I have ordered both as 20% off.

I have tried a jacket like the red one in store in another colour but as I am tall the length is far too short, shape too boxy and the pockets are too high.

How would you style either of these dresses (in terms of footwear not boots as too warm or trainers for this occasion and jacket) for an Easter family meal (for a casual / smart but put together look and to make my calves look slimmer) as really I would have preferred a longer length dress but this dress is in regular only.

Or anything else out there I am a 22-24 and 6ft tall.

Thanks

Black tights and slip on loafers or try and get some tights that similar to one of colours in dress? I recently switched from Snag to Better Tights. Nice dress

BigBoysDontCry · 18/02/2024 09:39

How about trying long tall Sally? They do large sizes and the length proportions would be better. I've 5 10 but I find I'm maybe a little short for them. 😁

ToothFairy2023 · 18/02/2024 09:40

Thanks @BCBird
Black tights and loafers would maybe go ok with the lilac dress with maybe a black casual blazer/jacket but I think I really prefer the brighter colours in the other dress which I would ordinarily wear with tan mules/sandals if warmer and no jacket in summer. But at easter it could be a bit cool maybe. Might get away without a jacket as driving but unsure about footwear.

Thanks @BigBoysDontCry I find since they were bought out the quality of clothing isn’t anywhere near as good as it was. I have ordered from them in the past but a lot is polyester, poor quality, badly made and doesn’t quite suit or fit me right. It also be made for a younger customer who likes more disposable fashion.

Ah that's not good. As I say, I'm not really tall enough for them nowadays, used to get the odd pair of jeans or jacket back in the 80s/90s.

BigBoysDontCry · 18/02/2024 09:57

Shoes wise, how about something like these with bright coordinating tights. Maybe a lightweight cotton card or a denim/canvas jacket?

How lovely to be so tall. I like the bright dress. Seasalt have another jacket called Reading Rocks that would work well. I think I would wear trainers with it. Maybe bright gazelles, trainers are fine for most places now. But if shoes, I really like Mary Janes. Cos have some nice ones.

ToothFairy2023 · 18/02/2024 13:49

I will check out the reading rocks jacket.

Thanks both I always opt for comfort, good arch support, less structured, less formal shoes. My usual go-to’s are comfortable slip on mules, sandals, trainers or ankle boots in the absolute depths of winter.

Hence, why I never have anything to go anywhere smarter. I have tried heels in the past but find them so uncomfortable and I don’t really need the extra height.

You sound like me, OP! Except that I add into the mix 4 replacement joints, one of which was fucked up by me falling downstairs, and massive bone spurs in my feet and ankles, so I can hardly wear any shoes at all (and walk with a stick).

My staple is metallic trainer-style shoes - I have some silver, some pewter and some rose gold ones, and I really do love them. They cheer me up every day. I got them from Hotter, who seem to have on average one non-hideous trainery style shoe every season. In summer I swap them for Birkenstock Gizehs, also metallic or bright silly colours.

BestIsWest · 18/02/2024 18:15

You sound like me too, OP and I like the brighter colour dress. What about a cropped cardigan to go with it? The Seasalt Tern Tide cardigan in Tomato might work. I’m also a fan of metallic trainers and wore gold ones to DS’graduation with a Seasalt dress. I honestly don’t know what I’d wear on my feet if it wasn’t trainers or sandals or boots.

ToothFairy2023 · 18/02/2024 18:42

Glad I am not alone @BestIsWest and @SqueakyDinosaur two other female family members will be there, they are both a good 10 years younger than me, prettier, very polished and glam, money to spend on clothes seems to be no object etc etc. One is very slim and extremely petite and will be wearing sky scraper heels and the other medium to slim build and taller than average will be wearing some sort of lower but still smart heeled shoes.

I thought I might make more of an effort than usual with a nice dress but I can’t find anything other than these dresses (which are more me particularly the brightly coloured one).

I thought maybe getting a low wedge in a tan, metallic, neutral colour or brightly coloured comfortable sandal but no idea whether these would look better or worse than trainers or mule type things? TIA.

OP posts:
BestIsWest · 18/02/2024 18:50

A low wedge would look good - I can’t wear any kind of heels unfortunately but I did toy with the idea of a lower version of something like this in :

Do have a look at the ooh Betty website. Great clothes, slow fashion only and British. And the lady who runs it will make to order for any height and size. I can really, really recommend her Betty's bottoms too if you're looking for casual indoor trousers. They are so comfy!

BigBoysDontCry · 18/02/2024 19:27

Honestly OP I think you choose something you like and feel good in and fuck what anyone else is wearing. You just need to own the room, be confident in your own style and don't worry about them.

I can guarantee they will be more concerned with themselves than you.

If you'd be comfy in your mules with the bright dress then go for that, some coloured tights, a swish of bright lipstick and you'll look fabulous!

You can't change your height and can't be a different shape by the time of the event (even if you wanted to change) and you know what you like.

I hope you have a great time 😊

HeadShoulderHipsandCalves · 18/02/2024 20:04

I wouldn't really call that size plus size if you are 6 feet. I bet people are envious of your height too. I'm no fashion guru but I'd take advance of it by wearing a longer length dress and trainers like pp says.

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 18/02/2024 21:48

I wouldn't really call that size plus size if you are 6 feet.
What? Of course it is, as OP is fully aware.

Really cute dress, OP. I do see the brightly coloured one as a summery dress that will look best with bare legs and lightweight shoes. The lilac one lends itself to matching with tights, chunky shoes and a jacket IMO. I'm probably not being helpful, but can you stretch to both?

You could possibly match the colourful one with navy tights and shoes, and a cropped jacket/cardi if you need.

BigBoysDontCry · 18/02/2024 21:57

Sarah millican the comedian wears dresses from Zuri that might be what you are looking for? Lots of prints and they are very loose and swishy.

Maybe look at how she styles them and get some ideas? She isn't tall like you but probably a similar shape.

I have major knee problems after an accident and having my knee reconstructed. You should also look at Hitec Silver shadows, they're nice without being really blingy

I have some great elastic Mary Janes but I do struggle to get them in a size 9

ToothFairy2023 · 19/02/2024 13:09

Thanks @HeadShoulderHipsandCalves but yes I am aware that although tall I am still plus sized. @Boomboomshakeshaketheroom

Yes, whilst being tall and this size I am perhaps more in proportion and a little less obvious than someone of a much shorter height yes I am aware I am still definitely plus sized. I have tried to do something about it but also have a number of health issues to contend with.
@BigBoysDontCry thanks some of those dresses have lovely colours but I think the cut will be wrong on someone taller and they will be too short. I will wear your confidence with pride alongside whatever else I wear.

I generally like maryjanes but I struggle to walk in shoes that are too stiff. One knee doesn't bend enough so my ankles generally need to compensate. But I agree if you can walk in them they do look smarter

theresnolimits · 19/02/2024 15:05

Everyone has their own style and I'm no fashion plate myself but this is my take. That sea-call dress is a really busy pattern - wouldn't it make you feel taller/larger? I can't open the lilac version.

Have a look on line. I hate to say it but Vanessa Feltz is currently promoting a line of dresses which are very wearable, feminine and flattering. Soft colours which suit us older ladies. Lots of choice and an elasticated waist which might give you more of a shape. I'm not related to her honest!

BestIsWest · 19/02/2024 15:48

What? So we taller/ larger types should try to minimise ourselves and hide away? Does the OP say she is trying to look smaller?

ToothFairy2023 · 19/02/2024 16:34

@theresnolimits thank you. No offence but isn’t Vanessa Feltz about 5’2’ or 5’3’ and if they fit her height they certainly won’t fit me as they will be too short and the elastic waist will be far too high and in the wrong place.
