Do these outfits work?

I’m going to a work conference next week. Day 1 will consist of meetings in the morning, a site tour, and then an all-day meeting with my manager, their boss, and 2 of my peers. Meeting everyone for the first time. We’re also going out after work.

Day 2 will consist of us plus the rest of the team including everyone I manage and other senior staff. I am presenting during the day and hosting.

day 1 outfit idea:
Blazer
Boots
Along with cream trousers tucked into the boots and a white blouse.

my day 2 outfit idea:
Blazer
Trousers
Shoes (inspired by the model in previous link)
A blouse with a similar neckline to this (not same item)

any thoughts? I want to wear things I’m familiar with and feel comfortable in, but with a slight change from my usual attire.

I would go for a darker coloured trousers rather than cream for a full day of working plus evening event: too much risk of getting them dirty. Also, no tucking into boots.

Logically4 · 18/02/2024 00:25

@HeddaGarbled thanks. What’s wrong with the knee boots & trousers combo? I wasn’t sure what shoes to wear on day 1, it’s due to rain all day so the long boots are usually my go to!

I really like light colours with the blazer, could something like these work instead? I know it’s a more casual outfit but works with drinks after work? https://www.asos.com/prd/201996654?acquisitionsource=pasteboard

Yes nice, also like your day 2 trousers in your previous post.

If you tuck either of them into boots, they’ll balloon at the knee and look like you’re wearing knickerbockers. Only leggings or similar skinnies can be tucked into boots without looking silly, and neither of those are suitable for many professional situations.

Tetsuo · 18/02/2024 01:22

I'm also not down with cream trousers tucked into mid-calf black boots.

What are the trousers like?

I like day two other than the silver shoes. I'm not sure they gel with the rest. Where do your trousers hit the shoe?

Tetsuo · 18/02/2024 01:25

No, not keen on the second trousers. The colour they're picking up isn't quite right and the fabric will look quite flimsy against the wool houndstooth.

Slouchy tweed could work.

But not with the boots.

What else have you got?

SleepPrettyDarling · 18/02/2024 01:27

I hear you about the site tour and the rain, but am not a fan of the trousers tucked into boots look for Day 1. What sort of site - factory, museum, building site? Would dark leather trainers with a wide-legged trouser suit work?

Day 2 if presenting I would go with a stronger colour, not black, to stand out.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2024 02:01

If it's a site that involves the potential of being wet and or dirty, then frankly take Wellington's to wear whilst on site and into which you can tuck your trousers with impunity. But I agree with everyone else - tucking trousers into knee boots is going to look very odd. I'm picturing Cossacks.

White trousers - definite no.

Silver shoes no. And not the halter neck blouse either.

Logically4 · 18/02/2024 02:05

Thanks. The stuff I’ve ordered will arrive today, if no good I’ll head to the shops. The top I have at home is high neck with my arms/back covered - it’s not the same halter neck one linked

By site tour, I just meant a visit of the venue - a big office with a couple of buildings outside.

I’ll revisit the day 1 outfit. Definitely want the blazer but am also considering wearing a long black dress instead for a day to night look. I also have long skirts - could look alright with a jumper. Black trousers - slim fit and wide leg.

I think the trousers may cover the silver shoes so only the point at the front is visible, but we’ll see. If not, I’ll quickly grab a similar style from the shops tomorrow. What colour would look best with navy?

Tetsuo · 18/02/2024 02:12

I was also picturing Cossaks with cream trousers in those boots.

Away now!

We move on.

I actually think the halter blouse with a sharp blazer could look great. You just have to get the right trousers. And I'd ditch the shoes and lean into something a bit more masculine.

I wear super-wide trousers a lot.

And wide straight trousers a lot.

And straight trousers.

And slouchy.

I love trousers, I can give great trouser advice.

Let's talk trousers.

Logically4 · 18/02/2024 02:19

@Tetsuo lol! Yes, let’s talk trousers. I love them but I’m also on the short side, so they don’t always look right on me. I like tapered trousers the most as easier to find shoes that work. I don’t mind high waisted wide leg styles, but sometimes it can be hard to find the right shoes

OP posts:
IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 18/02/2024 02:23

On the shoes I think a flat brogue or derby shoe would look better or a monk buckled style or Chelsea boots.

Logically4 · 18/02/2024 02:33

I like those styles, especially with the 1st outfit. It’s just with the 2nd outfit, I’ll likely need heels due to height. Sometimes long trousers and “bulky” shoes make me look a bit stumpy

Stickyricepudding · 18/02/2024 05:06

By tucking cream trousers into long black boots with a brown houndstooth jacket, you look like you're going horse riding.

So no to long Boots tucked into skinny trousers of any colour. I'd go for ankle boots, loafers or lace up shoes.

Corksoles · 18/02/2024 09:14

Are you buying two different navy pieces or a matching jacket and trousers on day 2?

I really don't like mismatched navy. Creams, browns, greys - all are fine in different shades for different items. But I have never seen mismatched navy look good.

Could you get away with smart trainers on the 2nd day? Would look nice with a good navy trouser suit.

Tetsuo · 18/02/2024 09:57

It's not height though @Logically4, it's proportions!

My sister is six inches smaller than me but we have exactly the same proportions. Photographed separately we look the same height and size. She's a 6, I'm a 10. We get our clothes tailored to fit.

Photographed together I'm about 50% bigger, all-over!

So, let's throw height out of the 'how I dress' equation.

It really is about proportions, if you're interested in such things.

ScentOfSawdust · 18/02/2024 10:42

I agree with the pp. The day one blazer/trouser/boot combo sounds perfect for showjumping.

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2024 11:53

day 1 outfit idea:
Blazer - no. Oversized and double breasted. Will look wide and boxy
Boots - they're OK.
Along with cream trousers tucked into the boots and a white blouse. I'm picturing someone from a Jilly Cooper novel.

my day 2 outfit idea:
Blazer - too androgynous.
Trousers - ok
Shoes (inspired by the model in previous link)
A blouse with a similar neckline - ok

Black is very dull for a conference.

Ophy83 · 18/02/2024 12:31

I feel like day 1 is giving horseriding vibes. Maybe dark trousers rather than cream, or different shoes instead of the long boots. Day 2 sounds fine.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 18/02/2024 15:21

I can't see how cream trousers tucked into black knee high boots will look well on any level, especially not at a work event.

Sorry but I just can't visualise it looking in any way professional. It's a strange combo at any time.

Isometimeswonder · 18/02/2024 15:54

No trousers in boots please.
Unless you're showjumping or in a Jilly Cooper novel.

Maising · 18/02/2024 16:39

Sorry I would steer clear of trousers in boots.

It's tricky to get the same shade of navy, so wouldn't get a non-matching suit, the fabrics will probably be different too. If you have your heart set on a navy suit, this is nice suit I'd wear platform trainers with it to modernise it.

Dogfisher · 18/02/2024 16:57

No to the boots altogether.
