Tall with big feet

Rocket123 · 16/02/2024 18:05

I really struggle with nice footwear. I’m 5ft 8 and shoe size 7.5 or 8. Always 8 in flats like sandals and pointy shoes. I’m dating someone who is 5ft 11 and size 9. I feel so self conscious about both my height and my feet!! I don’t want to feel bigger than him.

so I struggle massively with footwear for occasions. I love dresses with heels but I feel like a giant so can’t. Doc martens look so massive on my feet. What kind of shoes can I wear that are fancy for cocktail bars etc and that go with skirts and dresses that have a really small heel and don’t look huge??

I know I need to get over it ideally but I’ve always had this complex so I need to manage it for now.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated!

I'm 5'9 with size 9 feet and buying footwear is a nightmare. So restricted in styles. Even in trainers I often have to buy mens which means generally less colourful options. Sizes seem to have shrink also - I always have to check the EU size is a 43, some UK size 9s now come out smaller.
I do find Irregular Choice do occasional larger sizes and fit well, as do Next.
It's no fun shoe shopping!

Hi op have a look.on shoezone. They do some 8 and 9s. I agree not huge choice Im 9. I got few on asda and yours clothing.

makeupme · 16/02/2024 18:17

I'm a little taller but similar sizes. I'm past the age of wearing "ridiculous shoes" as I would call them (last worn about 3 yrs ago after a break up and nearly broke my neck!) but I mourn them as I do feel the height of a good heel shortened the length!
Not sure I can advise much other than don't do the pointy ended ones as they'll crush your toes and just make you feel like you have jet ski feet. Oh and don't even try to shoe shop in Asia! Grin

makeupme · 16/02/2024 18:20

Thinking more on what I subconsciously look for it would be bars of some sort going across and maybe open toe - a bit like how you aren't mean to wear horizontal lines if you don't want to look fat but the opposite, to make the foot look wider and give the illusion of being shorter. If that makes sense? So either several straps or a chunky division along the main front of the foot.

Rocket123 · 16/02/2024 18:20

Agreed on all points! And yes to the higher heel making them look smaller. But then I’m feeling too tall. Argh. I look in envy at shorter women who can wear the really lovely heeled boots etc. I just feel too uncomfortable.

Any suggestions on styles to try with dresses? Am I resigned to clunky flat Chelsea boots??

You're only 5'8". Hardly a "giant."

Agreed but in a normal pair of heels I am taller than a lot of people including my partner and I don’t feel comfortable with it. I know I’m not actually a giant it’s just a feeling and I do think it’s a complex I got when a teenager!

I get this OP, I had an ex who was the same height and had a massive chip on his shoulder. Took me a while to get used to being "allowed" to wear heels at all!

Rocket123 · 16/02/2024 18:27

Thank you - yes but it’s the heel and then when lower they don’t look so elegant. I don’t know if what I want actually exists.

Thank you! Glad you can wear them again :) He’s not said anything, not sure if he’s bothered and I need to work on not caring but in the meantime I need to find a solution so I can feel good and wear the dresses!!

Ooh they’re nice!! I can imagine those looking really nice with a skirt. Will see if I can go and try some on!

@Rocket123 if it's a style conundrum, is this useful?

I think you need to give yourself a break & get over your complex as no one will notice. I used to model (badly) & was the shortest at 5ft 9 with abnormally small feet (5.5/6). They were size 7-9 & all wore heels.

shielder · 16/02/2024 18:46

Russell & Bromley, Topshop, New Look all go up
to 9s. What styles do you like?

unicornhelp · 16/02/2024 18:47

Check out a brand called Otto and Ivy, a small brand started by a woman with exactly your dilemma. Read her blog posts too, might help you feel a bit better.

I find that ladies' running trainers often come in larger sizes, including half sizes (I wear an 8 1/2), so buy them instead of 'fashion' ones.

I never cared about being taller than my boyfriends when I was younger (I'm 5'11"), so wore big heels anyway. I would definitely break my neck if I wore heels now though; too out of practice!

Moier · 16/02/2024 18:55

I'm 5ft 7 with size 7 feet.. didn't realise l was classed has having big feet ( after all Jane McDonald's is 5ft 4 with size 8)
My hubby was 5ft 8 with size 9
I wore platform's in the 70s.. Sasha shoes were all the fashion ( see photo) don't know how we never broke our necks lol.
Now l wear trainers and small Wedges.. loads of sandals in summer.
But I'm 65 and use a stick and have disability in my hips and pelvis.
I hope someone can help you.

6ft, size 43. I find most places do an 8, very few proper 9 (43) and even fewer actual quality shoes
I don't want to be rebuying shoezone/deichmann shoes every 3-6 months.
My shoes are mainly dr martens, Converse and Clarks.

I actually got laughed at by a sales assistant in a department store when looking for wedding shoes. She said ofcourse they wouldn't have anything for me and said good luck finding any.

beetr00 · 18/02/2024 06:55

@Mt563 other options?

I am 6ft tall and size 8 feet

in my 20s I used to wear heels and be a bit taller than my DH who always said it was cool and that he found me being tall attractive so I would wear whatever I liked. You kind of have to learn to “own” whatever looks you are given by nature/genetics, be it tall or petite or athletic or curvy…

I am older now and so over heels, so I wear chunky boots or trainers or loafers and no longer worry about smaller feet or “flattering” shoes. It’s normal for taller women to have size 7/8/9 feet.

i did use to wear ballet flats for “smarter” occasions or kitten heels but those styles feel very old fashioned now?

MyFirstLittlePony · 18/02/2024 06:59

Also, in my experience literally everywhere does size 8 now

cuckyplunt · 18/02/2024 07:00

Magnus? surely?
