Has anyone tried the Dyson airstrait yet?

now that it’s available in the UK was wondering if any MN’ers have tried it and if so what do you think?

I am a terrible impulse shopper so went ahead and purchased without waiting for any reviews but thought I'd share my initial thoughts for anyone else who has been debating ordering one - so far I absolutely love it!

I've bought loads of expensive tools before (including the Airwrap - absolutely hated it and sold it) and this is the first one I can say is genuinely worth it for me - it does an amazing job at just making my hair look "done" without the really lifeless/flat effect that straighteners can give. It is also incredible easy and quick to use (again unlike the Airwrap!) - I timed this morning and it takes just under 10 minutes to take my (just past shoulder length towel dried) hair to completely dry, styled and shiny. The results also seem to hold up pretty well against the damp/wind so far - rather than looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards by the time I get to work I can just quickly run my fingers through it and it looks fine again.

For context - I am someone who is quite rubbish at using most styling tools and also doesn't have the patience to spend long on my hair which I think is perhaps why I love this so much. For those of you who are more skilled with hair styling or don't mind spending a bit longer, I can imagine you would be able to get a "better" result with other tools, however if you're lazy or incompetent like me I highly recommend it 😀

Following! I have been interested in this so would love to hear other people's experiences

Hi OP, thanks for this. I have been looking for genuine reviews on this. Please can I ask your hair type? Thanks

Rina66 · 22/02/2024 04:54

My hairdresser friend uses the GHD Duet which I'm assuming is similar technology, she thinks it's brilliant.

Iorderedyouapancake · 22/02/2024 06:15

@Sweetnessandbite my hair is fine (although quite a lot of it) with a very slight wave to it- it tends to be quite frizzy and doesn’t hold a style very well

@Rina66 yes i think the Ghd duet is quite similar - I’ve seen suggestions that the Dyson is less damaging to hair but don’t know how true that is!

I don't know if you like Sali Hughes buy she's just done a pros and cons video on Instagram that might help?

Iorderedyouapancake · 22/02/2024 07:38

That’s a really good summary from Sali Hughes- I agree with almost everything she says, although I think her “con” about root drying is a bit over stated- I’m able to get it pretty close to the root and it only takes a few seconds to blast them with the airstrait. The plug is enormous but not an issue for me as big gap between my skirting boards and plug sockets fortunately!

I have one too and love it!

ThreeTescoBags · 22/02/2024 14:32

Just watched the review. That plug!! 😮

I'd have to unplug the kettle and dry my hair in the kitchen each time.

ChilliPB · 22/02/2024 15:20

I don’t really understand why the plug is such a massive issue? I totally get it’s not the best design, but surely you’d just use an extension cord/4 in 1 plug (I’d definitely do that rather than have to unplug the kettle to use it in the kitchen 😂).

I think it just means it's a bit crap you'd have to take it with you in your suitcase.

So bad there's no carry case or box for that price!

Yes - definitely would be really annoying to travel with @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor as I imagine the plug takes up a lot of space and looks quite heavy.
I don’t think the plug would bother me too much if it was mostly just to be used at home though.

MathsFiend · 23/02/2024 21:01

The plug has completely put me off buying it. Would have to use an extension and it’s just to faffy to do that every time I dry my hair. Plus so heavy to bring on holiday. Hopefully they bring out a version with a proper plug

userxx · 23/02/2024 21:39

So this is meant to be less damaging than straightening? How does you hair feel after using it? I’m definitely interested if it’s kinder to hair but the price tag is putting me off, might wait a while.

SpringFishing · 24/02/2024 07:58

That review says you can’t travel abroad with it, a major minus in my view. They are made for the voltage in each country they are sold in and thus won’t work abroad.

Orangello · 24/02/2024 08:06

like any other appliance that's not dual voltage, I'd expect the UK version will work in other 220-230v countries, and the US version in other 110v ones, it's not like each country has their own.

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 25/02/2024 23:17

Does anyone know about hair damage?
I'm really tempted to get this.
The plug is a non issue for me as I have enough space between the plug and skirting and otherwise I would use an extension cable anyway.

My only concern is GHDs, Babyliss etc absolutely ruined my hair over time.

SpringFishing · 08/03/2024 11:21

OMG. I bought one (from eBay so saved a few quid) and I’ve just used it for the first time and my god, I look like I’ve walked out of a salon. No shit.

I have above shoulder length, thick hair and can NEVER make my hair look as good as a salon. Usually I dry then straighten and my 15 min effort makes it look passable. I didn’t time this but I reckon it took at least 30 mins but it looks 100 times better. You Tube reviews said it was good only for pin straight hair but that’s my bag! I only want pin straight hair, it’s so thick that anything else looks poufy.

The cord is too short so I have to open up the wardrobe mirror to be able to see myself but that’s a minor issue. I am so impressed. I’m off to swish my hair around Asda now.

Iorderedyouapancake · 08/03/2024 15:56

@SpringFishing it’s great isn’t it? Still loving mine!

I can confirm though that the plug size is a pain when travelling- stayed in a hotel for a night last week and couldn’t plug it in anywhere as all the sockets were above things that didn’t leave enough of a gap. I love it so much I am prepared to travel with an extension cable though 😀

OP posts:
SpringFishing · 08/03/2024 16:01

Can you use it with an extension cable? I thought I’d read not but that would solve my mirror problem. Several hours later and it’s still swishy and amazing.

SpringFishing · 08/03/2024 17:29

Pics to show normal hair (albeit straightened a lot for a social occasion) and today after the airstrait.

Has anyone tried the Dyson airstrait yet?

That looks so good! I'm tempted...

Iorderedyouapancake · 08/03/2024 21:02

@SpringFishing you can definitely use it with an extension cable, I’ve tried it with mine (or maybe I should say it works with an extension cable- not sure whether you are supposed to or not!)

I ended up buying it and use it with an extension cable.

I don't find it as good as the PP tbh. It is good and its better than I can do it with a hairdryer and a brush but there is still frizz although not as much (and I use the cold setting to finish it off). There definitely isn't any swishing but then I don't have swishy type hair.

I'm also concerned it is damaging my hair. I went through a period of hair shedding and hair loss and it took me over a year to reverse it. Since I've been using the airstrait, I have noticed more shedding than usual.

I'm torn whether to keep it or not. I probably will but I will limit using it to once a week.
