Wow dress for a school ball

My son leaves school this summer and we have an evening dinner dance. I am looking for something a bit special. Not black and no split to the thigh dress. I'm in good shape but at nearly 60 looking for something classy.
I have my eye on a Me and Em dress but it has an eye watering price tag.
Where else can I look?

I wore a full length navy sleeveless dress but wide straps and not too low cut to DD's.

To those surprised parents go, it's normal at private schools

That's retsina at a greek taverna followed by a kip in it the next day on a sunbed

Edited

🤣🤣🤣 but I could wear it in Ibiza when I am there September.

No idea of the quality, I was googling a dress I saw on TV -

I think if you can buy the one you love and then sell afterwards- dress agency or similar. Then it wont be that different money wise to buying a cheaper dress. Hard once you’ve found something you love to compromise and also life’s to short- but the dress 🥳

Bunnie007 · 16/02/2024 07:12

too!

Go on to Vinted. I've been keeping my eye on Prom dresses for my daughter, there's so much choice on there for a fraction of the price.

Exactly. I am also going to sell quite a bit in my wardrobe.

You can have the fronts altered so it's not as low

As a teacher at our U6 leavers balls I would be pretty understated and covered up - I think that mums can be a bit more out there (and some absolutely were!) but the best dresses oozed class and kept flesh to a minimum but I think you know that anyway.

You remind me of certain teachers at my school who looked down on the pupils and parents, believing that a PGCE made them superior to the uncultured oiks they were forced to spend their day with.

Yes I like a couple of those. Thanks.

You have fabulous taste, OP! I hope you buy the Me and Em dress if it’s doable budget-wise; it’s absolutely beautiful.

That dress might be a bit over the top for a leavers ball. At the two for our boys (Shrewsbury) the entertainment was a proper funfair, dodgems etc. Also as someone else has said there is a lot of walking around on damp grass. The mothers at ours all seemed to wear dresses that were less 'look at me', it was the girl leavers who wore wow dresses. For what it's worth mine was a black silk chiffon column dress with black silk lining, sleeveless but with a cropped black silk jacket. I even managed to walk down the path to the boat house to try to see the badgers in it!

I have just perused the photos and definitely some wow dresses from the mums as well as the girls. Lots of scrappy gowns but they don't suit me.

I usually go for a jumpsuit and have a fabulous one in my wardrobe from Phase eight.

Be mindful that it will be summer and dancing in a hall or marquee will get very warm. All the 18yr old leavers will be glam - parents tend to be more understated in my experience.
