I am little and a bit fat (14) and quite old.

I’d like to buy one or two nice things to freshen up my wardrobe for spring. Not a coat or boots or a bag.

Ideally these one or two things will be able to take me to the pub or out to a nice restaurant, without being too dressy.

I wear a lot of black, so maybe something that isn’t black might be nice. I suit slim flare or rolled up jeans, various dresses and pencil skirts. I hate belts. Think I’m somewhere between an apple and a fat hourglass. I quite fancy something red, maybe, or some going out trousers that aren’t jeans.

Any suggestions very welcome to force me to look at things I wouldn’t normally look at. I hate polyester and have mixed feelings about viscose!

I am currently living in corduroy wideleg trousers for going out, from M and S and Uniqlo in green, blue and grey. Or they also have slim leg if you prefer. Both are very soft and comfy. I wear them with a black or navy knit jumper or turtleneck.

You did say spring. In which case, cords may be a little too warm? The other thing I am planning to try out is pleated or slip skirts with the same navy or black polo. I have my eye on some in silver or burgundy. Burgundy Satin Pleat Skirt | Sustainable Womenswear | Albaray I do have to say I find myself completely out of step with prevailing fashions these days- I don't do floral or girly- so whatever I suggest may not exactly be stylish.

Burgundy Satin Pleat Skirt

A-line midi pleat skirt meticulously crafted from a luxurious satin in a rich burgundy shade. This versatile piece pairs effortlessly with a chunky jumper and boots for a chic casual look or dressed up with heels for a more formal occasion. Please note...

I really like the sound of the cords. I saw some in M&S but the black ones looked as if they'd picked up a lot of fluff whilst just hanging in the shop. Might look at the blue ones instead. Thank you.

Pleated skirts don't suit me, sadly - but I do have a satin slip skirt that has had a lot of wear, mostly with trainers in the summer.

How old is quite old? 😂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/02/2024 17:16

Older than 50 and younger than 60! Grin

@Britpopbaby I love that and tried it on, but the neckline didn't work on me. You definitely know my vibe though!

I'm actually after something much more casual this time, I think.

It's cute, @Britpopbaby but would look frightful on me. And too dressy.

I don't think I want a dress - maybe a couple of separates, I think. Maybe a pair of trousers and a blouse? Or some going out jeans? Or...not sure - a couple of pieces that will work hard for me.

You said no boots so this may not be any help but I'm identified my shoes as needing a kick up the arse. I've always liked them flat and clompy and stompy but now that style's everywhere and it's starting to feel a bit tired.

I'm not sure what to try though and, in my case, it'll have to wait until I've got a bit more spare cash.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/02/2024 18:16

@Floisme I've got more pairs of boots than I dare admit - definitely enough for a different pair every day for about two weeks.

@Britpopbaby All nice but just not quite right. Sorry - I know I'm being awkward. I think until I know want kind of jeans/trousers might be worth trying, it's hard to think what kind of top might work.

I'll have to pick your brains about boots some time then Remus, but not on this thread!

Britpopbaby · 10/02/2024 18:21

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie No problem. What vibe are you going for? I like my wide leg cropped jeans and a nice top.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/02/2024 18:33

I find 'nice tops' very hard to find these days. Most of them are in horrible fabrics, or have really high necks.

I've fallen a bit in love with the shape of this but I don't like any of the colours and I think the quality/fabric might be pretty poor.

Sorry, Britpop. I don't like that one. I need deeper colours, I think.

I like these a lot but pale colours look horrible on me and polyester makes me sweaty.

Also definitely look at Sezane for dressy knitwear and silk or cotton blouses. I like the Chlo as pp has suggested and it comes in several colours.

Lentilweaver · 10/02/2024 19:03

I like that @Britpopbaby. I suit deep colours.
